But all the major players — hospitals, doctors, and insurance companies — have come on board for a solution to surprise bills, which occur when a hospitalized patient is treated by a doctor who is not in the same insurance network as the hospital, and is billed for the difference.

The term "attending physician" or "attending" also refers to the formal relationship of a hospitalized patient and their primary medic during the hospitalization, as opposed to ancillary physicians assisting the primary care physician. However, even on a consultation service, at an academic center, the physician who has finished his or her training is called the attending or consultant, as opposed to a resident physician.

VTE follow-up costs at three months, six months, and a year are about $5,000, $10,000, and $33,000 respectively; in Europe, the three and six-month figures are about €1,800 and €3,200. Post-thrombotic syndrome is a significant contributor to DVT follow-up costs. Annual DVT costs in the U.S. are an estimated $5 billion or in excess of $8 billion, and the average annual cost per treated individual is thought to be about $20,000.

On 16 March, seven new cases were confirmed; five in Zagreb, one in Rijeka and the first case in Karlovac, bringing the total number of infected in the country to 56. Minister Božinović confirmed 174 reports of self-isolation regime breaking. The same day, a third and fourth recoveries in the country were confirmed; the first hospitalized patient from Rijeka and a young woman in Zagreb. On 17 March, thirteen new cases were reported bringing the total number of recorded cases to 69. Minister Beroš stated that 1,014 samples had been processed and that 9,598 people were under medical control. The number of quarantined in the country was confirmed to be 63. Minister Božinović confirmed receiving 500 reports of self-isolation regime breaking, 93 of whom were proven to have broken it and would face sanctions. Three of the cases were three doctors from University Hospital Centre Zagreb and University Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče.

This means that the sensitivity of the test is less than perfect. So, for example, culture alone may not be enough to help a doctor trying to find out which bacteria is causing pneumonia or sepsis in a hospitalized patient, and therefore which antibiotic to use. When there is a need to determine which bacteria or fungi are present (in agriculture, medicine, or biotechnology), scientists can also turn to other tools besides cultures, such as nucleic acid tests (which instead detect that organism's DNA or RNA, even if only in fragments or spores as opposed to entire cells) or immunologic tests (which instead detect its antigens, even if only in fragments or spores as opposed to entire cells). The latter tests may be helpful in addition to (or instead of) culture, although circumspection is required in interpreting their results, too, because the DNA, RNA, and antigens of many different bacteria and fungi are often much more prevalent (in air, soil, water, and human bodies) than is popularly imagined—at least in tiny amounts.
