It results from the cross-breeding of desert horses of Arabian or Turkmene type from the south with steppe horses from the north. It is a small, agile and versatile horse that can be used for riding or driving. It is well suited to local horse sports, and especially to the Uzbek national game, kokpar.

Grooms whose employers are involved in horse sports or horse racing are often required to travel with their employers to provide support services during competitions. The village name is derived from Old Norse translating as "place of the horse fight" and the village has a long association with horse sports. Follifoot is not listed in the Domesday Book and the earliest known record is as Pholifet in the 12th century. Anglo-Saxon remains have been discovered in and near to the village and an Anglian cross is displayed at the crossroads at the top of the village. In the 19th century the village was a thriving community supported by such commerce as the flax industry, tanning, tailors, joiners, a wheelwright, cordwainer and blacksmiths.

Tingsryd Municipality (Tingsryds kommun) is a municipality in Småland, southern Sweden, in southeastern Kronoberg County, where the town Tingsryd is seat. The present municipality was formed by the local government reform of 1971 when the market town (köping) Tingsryd (instituted in 1921) was amalgamated with its surrounding entities. Tingsryd Municipality refers to itself as the "Horse Capital" because of a close connection to horses; they are housing nearly 2,000 horses. The new Tingsryd horse racing track (opened 27 July 2003) is the only one in Northern Europe being a mile (1,609 m) long and gathers all kinds of horse sports.

Scone Shire was merged into the Upper Hunter Shire in 2004, integrating parts of the former Murrurundi and Merriwa shires. The annual Scone Horse Festival is a celebration of Scone's cultural links to equines. It is celebrated during May and includes all manner of activities, including wine tours, Open Days across the numerous horse studs in the area, the Scone rodeo, the Scone School Horse Sports competition, the Black Tie Ball, and a parade in Kelly Street.

Organized welfare groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States, and animal rights groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, have been known to criticise some horse sports with claims of animal cruelty. Horse racing is a popular equestrian sport which is practiced in many nations around the world. It is inextricably associated with gambling, where in certain events, stakes can become very high. Despite its illegality in most competitions, these conditions of extreme competitiveness can lead to the use of performing-enhancing drugs and extreme training techniques, which can result in negative side effects for the horses' well-being.

These problems are exacerbated by the excess weight carried by some riders relative to the horse's constitution: according to studies, the rider's weight should not exceed 20 to 29% (including equipment) of the horse's weight. However, certain breeds are better carriers than others, particularly the mixed breeds. The exploitation of certain horses for mounted or harnessed equestrian tourism, in Camargue among other places, causes considerable suffering through lack of rest or care. In Russia, Nevzorov High School brought forward a petition requesting a total ban of equestrian and horse sports, arguing that they are against the nature of the horse, causing great pain in its mouth (up to 300 kilograms of pressure per square centimetre) and damage to the neurological system.

The likelihood of heavy debt is a deterrent to prospective host cities, as well as the prospect of unused sports venues and infrastructure saddling the local community with upkeep costs into the future with no appreciable post-Olympic value. The Winter Olympics has the added problem of the alpine events requiring a mountain location; the men's downhill needs an 800-meter altitude difference along a suitable course. As this is a focal event that is central to the Games, the IOC has previously not agreed to it taking place a great distance from the main host city. (In opposite to the Summer games where sailing and horse sports have taken place more than 1000 km away) The requirement for a mountain location also means that venues such as hockey arenas often have to be built in sparsely populated areas with little future need for a large arena and for the hotels and infrastructure needed for all olympic visitors.
