Selar is a genus of ray-finned fishes from the family Carangidae which includes the scads, jacks, pompanos, trevallies and horse mackerels. The generic name, Selar, is the local name for the oxeye scad in Jakarta.

Alepes is a genus containing five extant and one extinct species. It is part of the jack family, the Carangidae are part of the order Carangiformes. Recent phylogenetic studies using molecular information have placed Alepes in the subfamily Caranginae (or the tribe Carangini). The most comprehensive study suggests the genus is basal to all other 'scads' and 'horse mackerels' of the genera Trachurus, Decapterus, and Selar, whilst still being closely affiliated with larger members of Caranginae such as Caranx.

The Pacific jack mackerel is classified within the genus Trachurus, commonly known as the horse mackerels or jack mackerels. Trachurus is part of the jack family Carangidae, this family is classified within the order Carangiformes. Recent genetic studies have divided the Carangidae into four subfamilies, with the genus Trachurus falling into the 'Caranginae' (or tribe Carangini), being most closely related to the 'scads' of the genera Decapterus and Selar. The species was first scientifically described by William Orville Ayres in 1855 based on the holotype specimen taken from San Francisco Bay, California.

The yellowtail horse mackerel (Trachurus novaezelandiae), also known as the yellowtail scad, is a jack in the family Carangidae found around Australia and New Zealand at depths to 500 m. Its length is up to . The yellowtail horse mackerel is very similar to the greenback horse mackerel, but has 68 to 73 lateral line scutes, compared with 76 to 82 for the greenback horse mackerel. Adult yellowtail horse mackerels are found in coastal waters and estuaries, showing a preference for waters less than deep and no cooler than .

Walls of Troy The town of Mykonos, part of the Cyclades Fish are Greece's second- largest agricultural export, and Greece has Europe's largest fishing fleet. Fish captured include sardines, mackerel, grouper, grey mullets, sea bass, and seabream. There is a considerable difference between fish catches between the pelagic and demersal zones; with respect to pelagic fisheries, the catches from the northern, central and southern Aegean area groupings are dominated, respectively, by anchovy, horse mackerels, and boops. For demersal fisheries, the catches from the northern and southern Aegean area groupings are dominated by grey mullets and pickerel (Spicara smaris) respectively.

The vadigo is the only species classified in the monotypic genus Campogramma, which itself is one of 31 genera in the family Carangidae, which contains the jacks, horse mackerels and pompanos. The Carangidae were classified as Perciform fishes in the suborder Percoidei, but most authorities now classify the carangids in the order Carangiformes along with the remoras, dolphinfishes and related families. The species was first scientifically described by Bernard Germain de Lacépède in 1801 under the name of Centronotus glaycos. In 1903, Charles Tate Regan transferred the species to a new genus, Campogramma, creating the valid combination in use today (Centronotus is now considered a synonym of Naucrates).
