Francisco Pizaro de Orellana was born in Manila, Philippines in 1630 and served as Archdeacon of Manila and commissary of the Holy Crusade. On 22 February 1680, he was selected by the King of Spain as Bishop of Nueva Segovia and confirmed by Pope Innocent XI on 27 May 1680 in Vigan. In 1681, he was consecrated bishop. He served as Bishop of Nueva Segovia until his death on 2 September 1683.

Garfield as a brigadier general during the Civil War After Abraham Lincoln's election as president, several Southern states announced their secession from the Union to form a new government, the Confederate States of America. Garfield read military texts while anxiously awaiting the war effort, which he regarded as a holy crusade against the Slave Power. In April 1861, the rebels bombarded Fort Sumter, one of South's last federal outposts, beginning the Civil War. Although he had no military training, Garfield knew his place was in the Union Army.

Beginning in 1946, in an effort to organize the largely unorganized south, CIO officials began what is called Operation Dixie. This was done for multiple reasons, the first being it sought to organize the Southern textile industry in order to close the wage gap that existed between the North and South stopping the potential flight risk from the North due to the cheap, organized labor that was available in the South. Second, this effort was also an assault on the Bourbons who until then had been the ruling southern power. To start CIO flooded the streets with 200 organizes in what was called the "Holy Crusade" of organizing.

In 1880 the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) decided to tour Ireland with a "bee tent" to show modern beekeeping equipment and manipulations of bees to the public. They were joined by Brother Joseph, throughout much of Ireland as he continued on his "holy crusade" for the honey bee; he later proposed the formation of an Irish beekeeping association "for promoting and instructing the improved methods of bee culture to the cottagers of Ireland". In 1881 the Irish Beekeepers Associations (IBKA) was formed, holding a honey show in Dublin; in 1908 their name was changed to Irish Beekeepers' Association (IBA), in 1939 it was wound up due to decreasing membership. In 1943 the County Dublin Beekeepers' Association was formed, from which an attempt was made to revive the old IBA to form an all Ireland body.

Alfonso Clemente de Arostegui y Cañavate (Villanueva de la Jara, March 5, 1698-Madrid, October 2, 1774) was a Spanish bishop, writer, lawyer and diplomat. He studied at the University of Salamanca and at the University of Alcalá de Henares. He worked for the Departments of Instituta and Decrees at the University Complutense; in Zaragoza's mayor's office; in Roman Rota; as an interim minister plenipotentiary of Spain in Rome; as an ambassador in Rome; at the Council of Castile; in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando; as a royal commissioner of the Holy Crusade; in the Council of State; and as a member of the House of Castile. He bequeathed all his books to the College of Seminario de San Julián in Cuenca, also leaving two trusts to support librarians and their corresponding libraries, and two student scholarships.

As the Crown of Castile found its territories rapidly expanding half a world away during the Spanish colonization of the Americas and the Spanish Philippines, it found it necessary to grant its overseas oidores functions and powers, which in the mother country normally fell to other officials. Thus, the oidores of the overseas audiencias functioned not only as judges of the audiencia, but also as magistrates overseeing the sale of the Holy Crusade indulgences (juez de la Santa Cruzada), mortgages and ground rents (juez de censos), probate issues (juez de bienes de difuntos), and legal separation (oidor juez de casados). In the audiencias in which the criminal judges (alcaldes del crimen) met as a separate chamber, as those of Mexico City and Lima, it was not uncommon for one person to serve as both oidor (civil judge) and an alcalde del crimen. Moreover, upon the death or incapacity of a governor or viceroy, either the senior oidor (oidor decano) or the audiencia as a whole would serve as the interim governor or viceroy, depending on the specific law of the territory.
