They wander into a saloon/brothel and attempt unsuccessfully to cheat their way into a fortune at the card table. Penniless, they try to trade their shotgun for a loan at the bank, causing a teller to sound the alarm. They try to escape by hitching a lift from a driver who thinks they’re stealing his car at gunpoint, and runs away to demand that they face justice.

Impatient, she hires a car and offers D a lift, but when they stop at a hotel a man in the washroom tries to rob D. Deciding to drive on alone, he is followed by L, whose chauffeur beats him up and leaves him by the roadside. They do not find the government documents D had hidden in his shoe. Hitching a lift to London, D follows instructions by booking into a seedy hotel, where he befriends the 14-year-old maid Else and persuades her to hide his documents in her stocking. Then he goes to meet his contact K, who works at a language school teaching an invented language called Entrenationo (obviously modelled on Esperanto).

Faced with the disdain of his pack, Freddy is challenged to prove his wolf status by moonrise the next day or risk being banished. However, his efforts are curtailed from the beginning when Hotspur's children put a silver collar on him, preventing him turning back into human form, although he manages to escape the mansion. Hitching a lift into town on a passing truck, Freddy decides to try and retrieve the Moonstone from Cripp, who now runs a werewolf exhibition that has been covered by anti-werewolf defenses preventing the pack from retrieving it themselves. While searching in town, Freddy befriends Batty, a stray dog also known as 'Houndini' for her ability to consistently escape the dog-catchers, offering to give her access to his mansion's supply of meat if she helps him retrieve the ring from Cripp.

Yosser speeds off in the group's own van and gives chase to Brendan and Dominic, who attempts to puncture Yosser's tyres by smashing empty milk bottles on the road from the back of the van. Yosser swerves and avoids them, but runs out of petrol, shouting and venting his anger by bashing his head on the steering wheel. He finds a can of petrol in the back of the van, partly refuels and sets off in vain to find the pair, before giving up on a roundabout, bringing traffic on it to a halt and breaking down in tears, ignoring the tailback and horns being blown behind him. He returns to the group after stopping by where he had abandoned a number of items from the van, headbutting a man he believes to be an Irish gypsy and kicking his companion to the ground, who protests he is neither a gypsy nor Irish and was "just hitching a lift".
