Of Joseph Harris, the eldest, who married one of the daughters, and heiress, of Thomas Jones, of Tredustan, little has been recorded beyond the information derived from his monument in the church. According to the club's rules, the object of their meeting was "to bring together, at stated periods during the winter season, a set of men highly respectable in society, who had passed their best days in a savage country and had encountered the difficulties and dangers incident to a pursuit of the fur trade of Canada". Only fragmentary records remain of their meetings, but from these it is clear that the Beaver Club was "an animated expression of the esprit de corps of the North West Company". The men of the Beaver Club were the predecessors of Montreal's Square Milers.

Brezhnev, according to Hanson, did preside over a period of slowdown in economic growth, but claims that the era started with good growth that was at a higher rate than during the end of Khrushchev's rule. Economic slowdown began in 1973 "when even the official estimates began to show Soviet per capita production no longer closing the gap with the US." Before 1973, there was a reform period launched by Alexei Kosygin, which many believed would become as radical as those in the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia and the previous reform attempts in Hungary. According to Hanson, many assumed that growth during the Brezhnev era did not stop but started to stagnate. Not everything stagnated, however, as per capita consumption grew by 1.9% during the 1970s, which is a "highly respectable rate" of growth.

The installation of Jim McCluskie as manager saw Rossendale claim the NWCFL Division one title in 2000–01, and following an excellent start in 2001–02, Rossendale topped the NPL Division one table in the early stages of the campaign. Unfortunately, key players were lost through injury and the club dropped down the table but still finished a highly respectable ninth place, their highest ever finish in the Non-League pyramid. The next three seasons saw a procession of managers at the club as they all tried, and failed to repeat the success of McCluskie's side. 2004–05 should have seen the club relegated back to the North West Counties League but an off the pitch reprieve saved them from the drop as they retained their NPL status.

Canada's openers Dipchand (105) and Prashad (129) shared an opening partnership of 233 as their country made 356/2; Fiji made 109 to lose by a mammoth 247 runs. Israel made a highly respectable 262 against Gibraltar, with Z Moshe making 77, Perlman 69 and S Nemblette 63, but P White's 5-48 for the Gibraltarians proved important; they won by three wickets with eight balls to spare thanks to five scores of between 35 and 49. Hong Kong's 257/8 (Brian Catton 63, Ray Brewster) against Papua New Guinea looked good, but 55 from Vai and 50 from Maha was enough to get PNG home by two wickets with two overs in hand.

The members of a highly respectable family named Rosenthal in Cammin were kept in prison for six months, because a servant-girl of bad character testified that she had heard Rosenthal say that he would hang himself on a hook in the ceiling of his room, as he was unable to bear the remorse he felt for having participated in the murder of Winter. Investigation proved that this was intentionally false testimony. In the room, where, according to the girl's statement, Rosenthal had pointed to the hook, there never had been such a hook; the case against the girl was dismissed in 1902 on the plea of insanity.

The commendation of Brahms by Breslau as "the leader in the art of serious music in Germany today" led to a bilious comment from Wagner in his essay "On Poetry and Composition": "I know of some famous composers who in their concert masquerades don the disguise of a street-singer one day, the hallelujah periwig of Handel the next, the dress of a Jewish Czardas-fiddler another time, and then again the guise of a highly respectable symphony dressed up as Number Ten" (referring to Brahms's First Symphony as a putative tenth symphony of Beethoven). Brahms was now recognised as a major figure in the world of music. He had been on the jury which awarded the Vienna State Prize to the (then little-known) composer Antonín Dvořák three times, first in February 1875, and later in 1876 and 1877 and had successfully recommended Dvořák to his publisher, Simrock.

Julia had become aware of Leslie Stephen through both his writings on agnosticism, and through a mutual friend, Anne Thackeray (Anny, 1837–1919), the writer and daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray (see Stephen family tree). Stephen had married Anny's younger sister Minny (Harriet Marian) Thackeray (1840–1875) in 1867, the same year as Julia's marriage, but she died in childbirth in 1875, leaving him with a handicapped daughter, Laura Makepeace Stephen (7 December 1870 – 1945). After Harriet's death, Stephen lived with Anny and he became closer to Julia, who helped them move to 11 Hyde Park Gate (when the house numbers were changed in 1884, it became number 20) in South Kensington in June 1876, next door to her at number 13 (later 22). This was a highly respectable part of London, and Leslie Stephen himself had been born at number 14 (later 42).

Both of Anning's List A matches have come in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy. In September 2002 (playing in the preliminary rounds to the 2003 competition), Anning did not bat against fellow Minor County Cumberland, but he took three wickets in a comfortable win for Devon.Devon v Cumberland, 2002-09-12, CricketArchive. Retrieved on 2008-08-15. Anning also played in the 2005 competition, against a very strong Essex side, containing no fewer than 7 full internationals. Anning finished with highly-respectable bowling figures of 6–0–20–0 as Essex posted a target of 264 from 50 overs. Devon were 23 for 6 before Neil Hancock and Sandy Allen added 24 before Allen was caught behind by James Foster. Anning then successfully defended his wicket for 33 balls, scoring just 5 runs in half an hour, before being caught by Ravi Bopara off the spin bowling of Zimbabwean international Grant Flower.

Two away defeats followed, though they managed a highly respectable 1–1 draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane despite goalkeeper John Davies missing the train; however the team would fail to avoid defeat on the road again until 28 February. At home they recorded successive 3–0 league wins, but late December proved a disaster as they fell to 5–0 and 11–0 defeats at Lincoln City and Gainsborough Trinity; it was suggested the scoreline of the boxing day defeat to Gainsborough was such due to excessive drinking on Christmas day. New members were assigned to the club's committee and they resolved to sign better players, telling the current squad to "train or take the consequences". They lost the return fixture at Derby Junction on 17 January, but appealed the result as Junction's home secretary officiated as the official referee failed to appear; the appeal was denied.
