In the fall of 1962, Southern California high school students Jim Fuller and Pat Connolly were a guitar duo before founding The Surfaris in high school after meeting drummer Ron Wilson at a high school dance. He played alto saxophone and string bass in the Kalakaua Intermediate School and Farrington High School dance bands, and substituted in Musicians' Union bands during WW II. By the age of sixteen, he was working for Charlie Kaniyama & His Merry Melodeers and filling-in with other small combos.

Ben Nichols's previous band was Red 40 in which he played alongside Colin Brooks and Steve Kooms. Drummer Roy Berry is half of experimental duo Overjoid and was a member of the Memphis-based band The Simple Ones before joining Lucero. John C. Stubblefield has recorded with Jello 1-2-3 (live at some high school dance), North Mississippi Allstars, Jim Dickinson and BigAssTruck (Sack Lunch EP), among others. He co-produced Hill Country Revue’s 2010 album Zebra Ranch.

During scenes at a high school dance, the band played cover versions of "At the Hop" and "Louie, Louie" as well as their original composition, "She's So Fine". Their version of "At the Hop" was released as a single in 1973. Flash Cadillac had chart hits in the 1970s with "Dancin' (on a Saturday Night)", written by Lynsey De Paul and Barry Blue, "Good Times, Rock and Roll" and "Did You Boogie (With Your Baby)".

Best keeps adjusting the rules in order to keep Cru out of the race and to ensure BMX star Bart Taylor (1984 Olympic gymnastics champion Bart Conner) has an easy road to victory, thus providing a financial windfall for Mongoose Racing, Bart's sponsor. Racers from all around come to the small town for the Helltrack and Cru meets Christian Hollings (Lori Loughlin), who becomes Cru's romantic interest. Christian and Cru meet at the local high school dance where, instead of dancing like the other couples, they perform freestyle bike stunts on the dance floor to the awe of many.

She also appears to be a skilled sorceress, as in one episode, she uses her powers to give Plucky the IQ of Einstein to help him ace a test. In "Love Disconnection", while attending a high school dance, Shirley gets doused with red punch, which triggers her psychokinetic powers and causes a flood at a school dance in a spoof of the Stephen King novel/movie Carrie. The CHHS Dance Team is ranked one of the top teams in the nation, breaking all-time high school dance team records multiple years in a row. In both 2017 and 2018, the Dance Team placed first in seven different dance categories at both USA National Finals in Anaheim, CA and the Contest of Champions Nationals in Orlando, Florida. In 2016, the team received 1st place in the Small Lyrical Championship Division at USA Nationals in Anaheim, CA. The team is also recognized for its 2016 hip-hop routine that won multiple awards at regional and state competitions and was performed at the CIF Varsity Boys Basketball game at the Honda Center. The CHHS Spiritleaders have frequently made both US Spiritleaders and USA nationals. The 2008 Mascots are the only CHHS spiritleading team to have medaled at the USA National Finals, taking 3rd in 2008.

Vukašinović started drumming simultaneously to his primary schooling in Sarajevo, joining his first band Plavi Dijamanti in 1963 at the age of thirteen. Formed by guitarist Edo Bogeljić, Plavi Dijamanti were an instrumental cover group — somewhat of an outdated setup since the city and the rest of Yugoslavia had already been experiencing the surging popularity of the vocalist bands. Mostly playing local high school dance parties, their shining moment came in 1964 at the city's very first gitarijada (battle of the bands) held at the Second Sarajevo Gymnasium — a competition they won largely thanks to Vukašinović's memorable drum solo while covering The Shadows' "See You in My Drums". Vukašinović then switched to Čičak with Zoran Redžić on bass, Mahmut "Paša" Ferović on rhythm guitar, and Dragan Danilović on lead guitar. Čičak folded in 1969. During spring 1970, Željko Bebek invited Redžić to join his band Kodeksi on club & bar tour in southern Italy since they immediately needed someone to play bass.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Taylor began his career in 1961, as a pianist and singer with several music bands in Toronto. He also made his first recordings in 1961, for the Audiomaster record label. The next year, Taylor's "At The High School Dance", a single for Amy-Mala Records, was a minor success. His next single, "I'll Remember", on the Barry label, was a No. 23 success for Toronto rock and roll radio station CHUM, and the singer decided to relocate to Detroit, Michigan, to further his career. In Detroit, Taylor was hired by Motown Records in 1964 as a songwriter and recording artist for the Motown subsidiary V.I.P. label. Taylor's scheduled first single (March 1964) for V.I.P. was the topical satire "My Ladybug (Stay Away From That Beatle)", but it was deemed too weak for release and was never issued. It was not until November 1965 that Taylor's debut V.I.P. single, "Let's Go Somewhere", was issued. It was written by Taylor in conjunction with Brian Holland, and produced by the team of Holland and Lamont Dozier, who had already produced five No. 1 scoring songs for The Supremes.
