In the early 1960s, Lamonte McLemore and Marilyn McCoo got together with three friends from Los Angeles—Harry Elston, Lawrence Summers. and Fritz Baskett—to form a group called 'the Hi-Fis' (which later became 'the Vocals'). In 1963, they sang at local clubs while taking lessons from a vocal coach. In 1964, they came to the attention of Ray Charles, who took them on tour with him the following year.

The group began as a duo called the Hi-Fis, with Ron Peterson on guitar and Chuck Schoning on saxophone. After recruiting a bassist and a drummer, they were known as the Four Frantics. Members that passed through the band in addition to Peterson and Schoning during their time were Denise Kaufman, Don Fulton, Eddie Lowell Goodman, Jim Manolides and three members of Moby Grape - Jerry Miller, Don Stevenson and Bob Mosley.

He was the first member of his immediate family to attend college, earning a degree in physics from Illinois College in the late 1950s. In 1960, he was on faculty at Niantic-Harristown High School in Niantic, Illinois, where he taught physics, algebra and English. He produced a single by the group, "Lonesome Mood", a jazz- type song that gained local attention. However, internal disagreements caused Elston to go his own way, eventually leading to his forming The Friends of Distinction, with latter day Hi-Fis member, Floyd Butler. McLemore sought to form another group and started looking for members to join him and McCoo. McCoo, who had studied with the respected vocal coach Eddie Beal, had appeared in high school and college musical productions and was known for her ability to do torch songs.

After graduating from university, Cuddy and Keelor formed a band called the Hi-Fis along with Jim Sublett on drums and Malcolm Schell playing bass. The band released a single in 1980 featuring "Look What You've Done" and on the B side "I Don't Know Why (You Love Me)". The record was not a commercial success, and when they couldn't get a record deal in Toronto, they headed off to New York City. In New York they met keyboardist Bob Wiseman, but were still unable to arrange a recording contract.

The Cartiers argued in court that they were driven to commit their crime out of desperation, caused by a €250 000 debt which they incurred on numerous credit cards and an assortment of consumer loans. They claimed that they had been caught up in a cycle of consumption, including on products for their children: each of the children had a television, two had personal computers, and three had hi-fis and games consoles. Emmanuel Cartier eventually spent entire nights juggling loans in a downward spiral of revolving credit.

Kenton in Hi-Fis wide popularity and sales benefited from the fact it was his greatest hits of ten years earlier re-recorded in stereo with a contemporary, much higher level band. The album climbed all the way up to #22 on the Billboard album charts and provided much needed revenue at a time when Rock n Roll had started to become the dominant pop music in the United States. It would become more and more difficult for Kenton to alternate between 'dance' and serious 'jazz' albums while staying financially solvent. During the summer of the summer of 1955 (July–September), Kenton was to become the host of the CBS television series Music 55.
