The Peace of Augsburg, signed in 1555, which for a while established a truce between Catholics and Lutherans within the Holy Roman Empire, did not acknowledge other Protestant groups, who had little or nothing in the way of princely protection and who remained liable to prosecution as heretics by both Catholics and Lutherans.

While totalitarian and undemocratic societies have suppressed art and demonized artists, burned heretics and tortured dissenters, I hope you will agree that we are fortunate to be living in a country where the use of religious symbols in art, whether approved by church dogma or not, is protected under the First Amendment.

For if we look to European Union as a catchall solution, chanting "Europe" like a mantra, and waving the banner of "Europe" in the face of recalcitrant "nationalist" heretics, we may wake up one day to find that far from solving the problems of our Continent, the myth of "Europe" has become an impediment to recognizing them.

Adapted from "Heretics," an episode of "This American Life" (one of the movie's producers is Ira Glass, the host and executive producer of that radio program), the movie is directed by Joshua Marston, whose earlier pictures include "Maria Full of Grace" (2004) and "The Forgiveness of Blood" (2011), both of which showed a commendable sensitivity to cultural diversity.

Then I went back and did extensive research into the history — everything from the Spanish Inquisition to Giordano Bruno, to Freud, Mussolini, and the Campo de' Fiori [the Roman square where heretics, including Bruno, were executed], and eventually to Israel — so that I could match the emotion in my voice to the history that was being referenced.
