In Biggar, Lanarkshire, a bonfire is lit on Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) to celebrate the end of the old year and the beginning of the New Year. It is lit by a senior citizen of the town who is accompanied to the bonfire site (which is by the Corn Exchange in the centre of the town) by the local pipe band and several torchbearers.

In 2000 he purchased the Davlyn Gallery and changed the name to the Helly Nahmad Gallery. The gallery since the 1990s has been located in the Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Nahmad’s gallery would go on to host several fine art exhibitions at the gallery per year, starting with the Sounds of Colours exhibition in 2004, which displayed the works of Wassily Kandinsky. The following year the gallery held two major exhibitions, a retrospective on Fernand Léger and a celebration of the work of Amedeo Modigliani.

Through May and into June 2011, the exhibition Soutine/Bacon was held at the Helly Nahmad Gallery, and was described by ArtDaily as "the first comparative exhibition of Chaim Soutine and Francis Bacon." Works were lent from institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, the Bacon Foundation, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Albertina, the Beyeler Foundation, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Kunsthaus Zurich, and the Pearlman Foundation. Brae was historically a fishing village, but with the construction of the nearby Sullom Voe Oil Terminal in the 1970s it grew rapidly, merging with the nearby village of Northbrae. It is located at the northern end of Busta Voe, on the narrow isthmus that joins Northmavine to the rest of the Mainland. The village stages its own Up Helly Aa. The A970 which connects Lerwick to Northmavine forms the main street of Brae. Brae's police and fire stations, schools, and NHS clinic service much of the northern part of the Mainland.

The current Lerwick celebration grew out of the older yule tradition of tar barrelling which took place at Christmas and New Year as well as Up Helly Aa. Squads of young men would drag barrels of burning tar through town on sledges, making mischief. Concern over public safety and levels of drunkenness led to a change in the celebrations, and saw them drawing inspiration from the islands' Viking history. After the abolition of tar barrelling around 1874–1880, permission was eventually obtained for torch processions. The first yule torch procession took place in 1876.

The honorary role of the 'Jarl' was introduced to the festival in the early twentieth century. In reality, despite many sources claiming these ancient origins, the festival, and many like it, were products of Victorian do-goodery. The Lerwick Up-Helly Aa was first established by the Total Abstinence Society in the 1870s to give the young men who would otherwise drink themselves silly something to do. The name itself derives from Upholiday, the lowland Scots' word for Twelfth Day, and was brought by them to the Shetland Islands in the 19th century.

Two scholars of Chinese labor in Cuba, Juan Pastrana and Juan Pérez de la Riva, substantiated horrific conditions of Chinese coolies in Cuba and stated that coolies were slaves in all but name. Denise Helly is one researcher who believes that despite their slave-like treatment, the free and legal status of the Asian laborers in Cuba separated them from slaves.

For much of the 19th century meetings of the local council were held in the Parish Kirk in Queens Lane. After a period of rapid population expansion in Lerwick associated with the growth in the herring industry, civic leaders decided to procure a purpose-built town hall: a site on the north Hillhead was selected. The foundation stone for the new building was laid by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh on a visit to the isles on 24 January 1882. That same evening Lerwick saw the first ever Up Helly Aa torchlight procession.

Hillel "Helly" Nahmad was born circa 1978. The son of art dealer David Nahmad, his extended family had developed a reputation as art collectors and dealers "predominantly in 19th- and 20th-century art" out of countries such as Italy and Monaco. Nahmad spent his childhood in Manhattan, New York and at a young age would shadow his father to fine art galleries, auctions, and museums. His father recollects that Nahmad was "scoping out antiques at Sotheby’s auctions" by five years of age, developing a fascination with artists such as Claude Monet by the age of twelve.

Hermann Leopoldi memorial (Vienna, Schönbrunner Straße 219) Hermann Leopoldi (born Hersch Kohn; 15 August 1888 - 28 June 1959) was an Austrian composer and cabaret star who survived Buchenwald. Einzi Stolz, wife of composer Robert Stolz, remembered him thus: :"Leopoldi was for us all some sort of creature from a different planet. Through a salvation bordering on a wonder he had survived the horrors of concentration camps Buchenwald and Dachau. Yarl has been accused of being a wizard. After the 2000 Olympics, Owens decided to pursue a professional road racing career, and moved from the Helly Hansen team to accept an offer from the Michaela Fanini team for the 2001 season, making her Ireland's first professional female cyclist (one or two cyclists had earlier been offered posts but had remained amateur). Every so often, the Great Selkie returns to find another human bride, as each bride he abducts dies whenever she tries to escape his clutches; he then uses their golden hair to roof his palace. Robbie begins to fear for his elder sister, Elspeth, who is golden-haired, very beautiful and entranced by Finn Learson. Robbie becomes convinced that Finn is the Great Selkie, but his family does not believe him. Elspeth states that she will choose one man, Finn or Nicol, (Nicol, who was her man before Finn Learson came ashore) to marry her on the celebration night of Up Helly Aa. Robbie goes to the schoolmaster, Yarl Corbie, for help.

It took until after the First World War until a squad of Vikings appeared in the festival every year. As the festival developed, the Guizer Jarl began to portray specific individuals from the sagas, or the history of Shetland. Later again, each Guizer Jarl would select both a name for the galley, which is constructed from October the previous year and burned at the culmination of the torchlight procession, along with a tune played by the Lerwick Brass Band as the Jarl leads his squad up the ranks of guizers just prior to the torchlight procession. Those wishing to become Guizer Jarl must be elected to the Up Helly Aa Committee (elections are held during mass meetings which all squads' members can attend), and then serve the committee for 15 years.

As part of the plea deal, he agreed to forfeit around $6.4 million and a Raoul Dufy painting, Carnaval à Nice, to the United States,Art Gallery Owner Helly Nahmad Sentenced to One Year and One Day for Being a Leader of an International, Multi-Million-Dollar Illegal Sports Gambling Business, U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York, April 30, 2014 with other charges such as money laundering, racketeering, and fraud dropped by prosecutors. Sentenced on April 30, 2014, he was released after four months of a 12-month sentence at the Otisville Federal Correctional Institution, also paying a $30,000 fine and taking part in drug testing, community service, and a gambling addiction program upon release.

Maestracci claimed that the painting, which had been sold in 1996 through Christie's for $3.2 million, had been looted from Stettiner in Paris during World War II. The complaint was withdrawn in 2012. In November 2015, Stettiner's estate filed an amended complaint in the Supreme Court of the State of New York again seeking title to Seated Man with a Cane from various Nahmad family members and the Helly Nahmad Gallery in New York. Arbitration was ongoing as of April 2016, with the defendants arguing that the painting had been legally purchased in good faith from Christie's, that Stettiner's claim of ownership was unproven, and that the Stettiner estate's case was bankrolled by individuals with a financial conflict of interest. In 2016, Nahmad’s gallery organized and held the exhibition Selected Works by 20th Century Masters.

He competed in his first World Cup at the age of 15 When he was 17 he was awarded the USSA Andy Mill award for sportsmanship and named to the Colorado All Star Team competed in his first professional competition at the age of 15 and his first of 4 X Games appearances at the age of 16 years old, in the discipline of Halfpipe skiing. In 2010 Wood became World Champion in 2010 winning the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival in the ski halfpipe event at Whistler, British Columbia. Wood has over 40 world cup starts and competed in Dew Tour competitions from 2008 until 2015 including 2 World Championship teams representing the United States.

Swara Bose (Helly Shah) is a girl from a liberal middle-class Bengali family, in and lives with her single mother Sharmishtha Bose (Parineeta Borthakur), and maternal grandmother Shobha Bose. Colston spent his early years exploring his interest in winter sports at Red Mountain, first as a student in Nancy Green’s snowboarding program and then as a member of the RED Mountain Racers team. From there, he began competing in the Junior Big Mountain series, where his gold medal placements in several challenges earned him an invitation to the 2007 Red Bull Cold Rush, as well as sponsorship from Oakley, Helly Hansen, Line Skis, and Red Mountain Resort. By 2014, he was also being sponsored by other big sporting brand names like Salomon, Giro, and GoPro, travelling to locations such as Alaska and the European Alps to produce content for this group of sponsors. In both October 2012 and November 2014, Colston was featured on the cover of the magazine SBC Skier (photographs by Dan Carr and Reuben Krabbe). In 2015, he was ranked in an online reader’s poll as one of the top 10 “Skiers of the Year” by Freeskier Magazine. He also competed in the 2016 Red Bull Cold Rush, and received sponsorship from Lib Tech in the same year, becoming a driving force for the reputed snowboarding company’s push into the skiing market.

Hatzopoulos has suggested that the Macedonian dialect of the 4th century BC, as attested in the Pella curse tablet, was a sort of Macedonian ‘koine’ resulting from the encounter of the idiom of the ‘Aeolic’-speaking populations around Mount Olympus and the Pierian Mountains, whose phonetics had been influenced by a non-Greek (possibly Phrygian or Pelasgian) adstratum, with the Northwest Greek-speaking Argead Macedonians hailing from Argos Orestikon, who founded the kingdom of Lower Macedonia and incorporated into it the ‘Aeolic’-speaking earlier inhabitants. However, according to Hatzopoulos, B. Helly expanded and improved his own earlier suggestion and presented the hypothesis of a (North-)‘Achaean’ substratum extending as far north as the head of the Thermaic Gulf; in prehistoric times, both in Thessaly and Macedonia, this Achaean substratum had a continuous relation with the Northwest Greek-speaking populations living on the other side of the Pindus mountain range, and occasional contacts became cohabitation following the population movements of the 7th c. BC, when the Argead Macedonians completed their wandering from Orestis to Lower Macedonia (expelling the Phrygians from the area around the Bermion and Pierian mountains, which would become the crandle of their power).
