While they will no doubt want to be held blameless, at least some appear to have been negligent in monitoring their admissions programs and others at a minimum clueless as to things like so-called student athletes gaining admission for sports they never played and won't play at the college level.

In Egypt, where the 2nd New Zealand Division was being rebuilt after the losses of Greece and Crete, Andrew and Hargest gave evidence in an inquiry on the conduct of the fighting on Crete. Officially, 5th Brigade was held blameless. Andrew remained as commander of 22nd Battalion during the early phases of the North African Campaign. At one point during the efforts to lift the Siege of Tobruk, his battalion was surrounded at Menastir and fought off elements of the 21st Panzer Division.

Lump perjures himself, claiming that Flem gave Mrs. Armstid's money to the Texan, and that therefore he was not responsible for refunding it to Mrs. Armstid. Eck is held blameless in the injuring of Vernon Tull because, technically, he never owned the horse that injured him. Mink Snopes is brought to trial for killing Jack Houston, but fails to participate in the trial itself; he declines even to enter a plea because he is waiting for Flem to solve his legal problems.

Fisher determined that the remaining data supported the study results, but he was removed from the directorship of the project, and Redmond was placed on leave from her professorship. By 1997, the United States Office of Research Integrity agreed that both Fisher and Redmond should be held blameless, and Redmond returned to her position. Redmond became a fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the American College of Epidemiology in 1982. She was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2005, and of the Society for Clinical Trials in 2013.

In 1855, Pitman invented the electrochemical process of relief engraving. A shorthand example in the system used by Benn Pitman. Transcription: “For the third time the Congress of the United States are assembled to commemorate the life and the death of a president slain by the hand of an assassin. The attention of the future historian will be attracted to the features which reappear with startling sameness in all three of these awful crimes; the uselessness, the utter lack of consequence of the act; the obscurity, the insignificance of the criminal; the blamelessness — so far as in our sphere of existence the best of men may be held blameless — of the victim.” From his arrival in the United States until 1873 Pitman was chiefly engaged in reporting.

Senator Mike Gravel, meanwhile, took considerable blame in Alaska for forcing Carter's hand with the Antiquities Act. Though Carter was hardly held blameless for the creation of the new national monuments, Gravel was taken to task for the unpopular decision as well and was denied his party's nomination for his Senate seat in the 1980 election. With the passage of time, however, and now, several decades later, support for the vision of ANILCA has increased, even among former detractors in Alaska—as the spectacular parks, monuments, refuges and other areas set aside by the 1980 legislation have become a significant boon to Alaska tourism and the State's economy. A telephone poll in 2000 showed that 45 percent of Alaskans supported the protection of the ANILCA- designated 1002 coastal plain area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the most controversial aspect of ANILCA's protected areas, while 49 percent opposed the protection.
