A new form of heart surgery that has grown in popularity is robot-assisted heart surgery. This is where a machine is used to perform surgery while being controlled by the heart surgeon. The main advantage to this is the size of the incision made in the patient. Robert E. Michler is a heart surgeon who specializes in complex heart surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass surgery, aneurysm surgery, and management of the failing heart. DeBakey DeBakey joined the faculty of Baylor University College of Medicine (now known as the Baylor College of Medicine) in 1948, serving as chairman of the surgical department until 1993. DeBakey was president of the college from 1969 to 1979, and served as its chancellor from 1979 to January 1996, when he was named chancellor emeritus. He was Olga Keith Wiess and Distinguished Service Professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and director of the DeBakey Heart Center for research and public education at Baylor College of Medicine and Houston Methodist Hospital. DeBakey was a member of the medical advisory committee of the Hoover Commission and was chairman of the President's Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke during the Johnson Administration.

"Bud" Frazier is a heart surgeon and director of cardiovascular surgery research at the Texas Heart Institute (THI), best known for his work in mechanical circulatory support (MCS) of failing hearts using left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) and total artificial hearts (TAH). In 1963, Frazier entered medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) on completion of a degree in history from the University of Texas-Austin.

Failing to gain support from the surgeons he spoke to and being unsuccessful in his application for a grant from the National Institutes of Health, he by chance met technician Jon Austin at St. Luke's Hospital, Phoenix and feeling that there may be hope of progressing with his artificial hearts, Cheng moved to Phoenix and opened a general and reconstructive dental clinic. After being introduced to heart surgeon Cecil Vaughn and veterinarian Peter Bates in 1983, Cheng was given space in a laboratory to carry out experimental work. In 1984, Vaughn and Cheng implanted the first Phoenix artificial heart in a calf and subsequently performed another three such procedures, with the longest survival of more than 12 hours. The next planned artificial heart procedure in 1985, was however cancelled when Vaughn was called to an emergency.

Born in San Francisco, California, Cohn received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley with honors in 1958. In 1962, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine with distinction (Alpha Omega Alpha). He received his graduate medical training from 1962 to 1971 at Boston City Hospital/Harvard, the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, the University of California at San Francisco and the Stanford University School of Medicine. During his tenure at Stanford University, he trained with pioneering heart surgeon, Dr. Norman E. Shumway. At Harvard Medical School, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery from 1971 to 1975, Associate Professor of Surgery from 1975 to 1980, Professor of Surgery since 1980, and was awarded the first endowed Virginia and James Hubbard Chair in Cardiac Surgery in 2000.

Smarn Muntarbhorn, MRCS 1941, FRCS 1945, MB BS London 1941, DTM&H; Liverpool 1941, FACCP 1951 (20 November 1914 - 2001) was a Thai-born cardiac surgeon and Thailand’s first heart surgeon. He is renowned as the father of cardiac surgery in Thailand and was the first Thai surgeon to become a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was awarded a royal honorary doctorate by the King of Thailand. Smarn matriculated from Suan Kularb College in Bangkok and was then awarded the prestigious King’s Scholarship from Thailand to study abroad in England. At nearly 19 years old Smarn moved to England where he attended Manchester Grammar School and then went to Guy’s Hospital to study medicine. Whilst a student at Guy’s Hospital, Smarn won a scholarship in confined science and the Golding-Bird gold medal and prize in 1940.

In 1969, he became the first heart surgeon to implant an artificial heart designed by Domingo Liotta in a man, Haskell Karp, who lived for 65 hours. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society was founded at the Texas Heart Institute by the Residents and Fellows of Cooley to honor him. Founding President Philip S. Chua had envisioned this exclusive society to foster academic, professional, and personal camaraderie among cardiac surgeons in the United States and around the world through scientific seminars and symposia. There are now more than 900 cardiac surgeons from more than 50 countries around the globe who are members of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society.

William F. Bernhard was born in Brooklyn, New York raised in Great Neck, New York, son of William Bernhard and Helen (Conroy) Bernhard. During World War II, after finishing college at Williams College in three years he served in the United States Navy as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He completed his medical training at Syracuse University Medical School, and after several thoracic and surgical residencies at Bellevue Hospital and New York- Presbyterian Hospital (formerly Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital) in New York Bernhard began his work at Boston Children’s Hospital with heart surgeon Robert E. Gross, MD and in the early 1960s facilitated his deep interest in cardiovascular research by forming Boston Children’s Hospital Cardiovascular Research Laboratory. Bernhard is a Professor of Surgery, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School, and conducted many of his breakthrough surgeries for implantation of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in other Harvard affiliated hospitals.

A study he performed found that polio vaccine could be stored for long periods by using magnesium chloride as a preservative, eliminating the need for refrigeration. Melnick was named as dean of graduate sciences at Baylor in 1968, a position he held until 1991. Together with heart surgeon Michael E. DeBakey, Melnick investigated the possible effects that cytomegalovirus might have on coronary artery diseases.
