Recared approved the Third Council of Toledo's move in 589 to forcibly baptize the children of mixed marriages between Jews and Christians. As Louise sleeps, Eric sneaks out to the cheap hotel that Isabelle's calls came from; he strong- arms a hotel manager (Paul Bradley) to tell him that a man named The Fixer videotapes prostitutes having sex with their tricks. After spending hours searching for The Fixer (Mike Copeman), Eric finds him in an adult movie theater and forces him to reveal the videotapes’ location. Tina (Lenore Zann), a stripper who worked with Isabelle, is murdered and her boyfriend Mark (Page Fletcher) becomes a prime suspect. Eric retrieves the videotapes from a locker and watches them in a state of shock: The videos reveal Isabelle and Hamilton having intercourse. Eric confronts Hamilton with the evidence of incest, which has been happening since shortly after their mother’s death.

As the story progresses over the span of two years in-universe, Kaoruko introduces Terumi to women who share their namesake with characters from "The Tale of Genji", including his cousin (who happens to be the first); Terumi slowly but surely starts to drop his awkwardness and fear towards the opposite sex. With each woman that he meets, Terumi learns to identify the target's quirks/problems, get them to open up to him and ultimately end up having intercourse with the woman in question. Blitz believed that Hal's stuttering was a metaphor for his lack of mastery of life and love: "He can't control this thing that ought to be so simple ... And so much of his life is like that." Journalist Mark Baumer highlighted the juxtaposition of Hal with the fast-talking debaters, who are at opposite ends of the spectrum with their speech but are both struggling with communication and expression.
