Professor Neil Frost harbours a grudge against his colleagues at Ancaster College, "aggravated by a university system that pays him modestly and ever more frustrated at being denied a full professorship." In A Murder of Crows, he conspires to commit heinous crime of mass murder with Walter Jones, a janitor at Ancaster with a scatalogical obsession who stalks female students and comes to display psychopathic tendencies. Steve, still shattered from Panda's death, wanders off into the bush. Rod immediately assumes control, and organises a house party. Rod is still reeling from the loss of his hair in the battle against the website, and he hopes to regain his confidence by donning a wig and picking up (and most likely date-raping) several girls at the party. He also harbours a grudge against Womp, whose poor effort in the fight against the website he partially blames for the loss of his hair, so he tells Womp that the house party is a challenge, and whoever picks up the fewest girls is kicked out of the Fist Team.

He hates Cliff Lawton (Timothy Bentinck), Hugh's predecessor, who harbours a grudge against Malcolm for forcing him to resign. Cliff hoped to take revenge by becoming PM with the help of Jamie McDonald in the special "Spinners and Losers"; this fell apart as soon as Malcolm learnt the identity of Jamie's stalking horse. Perhaps his most important relationship is with his secretary, Sam (Samantha Harrington), toward whom he is very protective; he is seen speaking fondly of her to Hugh Abbot in Series 2. Even in the immediate aftermath of his own forced resignation at the end of series 3, he is shown trying to comfort her and protect her from the men removing him from his office.

The film centres around the character of Tom, a young army recruit in an unnamed time and country (presumably World War II-era Eastern Europe) who deserts after an artillery barrage kills his sergeant, in the process blinding a sadistic officer who tries to stop him. He is shell-shocked into muteness and takes refuge with a travelling gypsy caravan, led by Darky (Hoskins). Among the principal members of the clan are Darky's mentally disabled son, Simon, Simon's mother Elle (Wanamaker) who harbours a grudge against Darky, and Darky's only daughter, Jessie (Nathenson), who forms a romantic bond with Tom, eventually becoming pregnant by him. In order to avoid arrest and execution by the army, Tom disguises himself as a "rawney", described in the film as a kind of "magic" madwoman, who (in the gypsy culture) is able to see the future and can control animals.
