But what it has given—although to a select few of us Indians who have the privilege of accessing global discourse—is the ability to better articulate our experiences, to be able to draw strength from the experiences of those who have been in similar situations, to call out harassers and sexual predators, and to start more meaningful conversations around consent, sex, and sexuality, even if in a few spaces.

But the advice is a bit rich coming from a person who has insisted that anything less than immediately believing accusers is moral cowardice: It is a bit confusing coming from someone who has advocated mercilessness toward alleged sexual harassers: Given that Mr. Bennett seems to have been financially strapped when he made the accusation against Ms. Argento, there are reasons to wonder whether he had an ulterior motive.

Online anonymity has allowed trolls to wreak havoc, but in sensitive situations like the #MeToo movement, anonymity has been the cause célèbre: When anonymous whisper networks that are turned into publicly available documents on the internet, like the list of "Shitty Media Men" and the list of sexual harassers in academia, their creators have either been described as radically feminist, or are threatened, accused of bullying and sued for defamation.

All of the ingredients for the systematic abuses of power that the #MeToo movement has articulated are here: colleagues who make excuses for the harasser, company heads who look the other way, victims who are saddled with humiliation even as they feel anxious to be acknowledged by their higher-ups (along with the rationalizing they do to explain away bad behavior), the way whisper networks are formed, and the layers of protection and utter lack of consequences the harassers themselves receive.

Getting around institutional protection is key in finding a solution for the workplace: In a system where harassers are routinely protected — from the tendency of victims not to report for fear of retaliation, to the futility of reporting to an HR department that tends to not believe women until a degree of "severity" is reached (not to mention that HR is arguably around to protect companies, rather than individual employees) — it simply hasn't paid off for women to report and root out harassment.

As Vox's Jane Coaston reported, the Senate's version of the legislation was approved in May and included a series of measures intended to address flaws in the Congressional Accountability Act: The legislation eliminates mandatory "cooling off" periods before victims of harassment can file complaints against their harassers, doubles the length of time victims have to file a lawsuit in federal court, and requires members of the Senate to pay back the Treasury for any settlements related to the harassment they committed.

It's how Gamergate harassers wheedled the games industry and many of its journalists into distracted chin-stroking over disingenuous claims about ethical concerns rather than full-throated condemnation; it's how Trump managed to reframe a neo-Nazi rally where a woman was murdered by a white supremacist into a conflict with "some very fine people on both sides"; it's how Twitter itself managed to cling to the swaying, decaying mast of free speech at all costs for so very long — even when the cost was persistent brutalization, often of its most vulnerable users.

Sure, complaining seems to come easily to everyone, but I don't think the women and girls and young trans folks that approach us every day on Vans Warped Tour are complaining when they say they wish more bands took a stand on issues that matter to them; when they thank us for being a voice for marginalized groups; for shouting out trans rights, shining a light on rape culture, and calling out sexual harassers; for mentioning that the "77 cents on the dollar" gender wage gap figure that we're all familiar with is incomplete because it does not include women of color, who make even less.
