The road is excellent after its resurfacing in August 2006 with smooth hot-mix and road widening that also took place later that same year. It is twisty with a series of hairpin turns punctuated by short straights. A few corners are prone to dampness due to the ferny rainforest surroundings. The scenery is beautiful with tall mountain ash trees and tree ferns, the typical of southeastern Australia's temperate rainforests.

The long tunnel is located on the European route E134 highway, about east of the village of Fjæra and about southwest of the village of Skare in neighboring Ullensvang municipality. The tunnel opened on 30 June 2006 to replace a narrow, winding mountain road that included some hairpin turns. The new tunnel has a maximum grade of 6.6%.

NM 78 at mile marker 7 The western terminus of SR 78 is located at a junction with US 191 and SR 75 at Three Way, Arizona near Greenlee County Airport. Stalheim is a village in the municipality Voss in Vestland county, Norway. The small village lies along the European route E16 highway in the northeastern part of the municipality. The village sits at a high point in the inner part of the Nærøydalen valley which leads northeastwards towards the Nærøyfjorden. The highway runs through a series of tunnels to descend into the valley, although the old road Stalheimskleivi can still be used with its hairpin turns and 20% grade.

The Estoril circuit was built in 1972 on a rocky plateau near the village of Alcabideche, from the city of Estoril, the beach resort lending its name to the circuit. The course has two hairpin turns, noticeable elevation changes, and a long (986 metre) start/finish straight. Its original perimeter was , and the maximum gradient is nearly 7%. Throughout the years, Estoril has had numerous problems with safety, failing safety inspections on more than one occasion.

The Austmannali Tunnel () is a road tunnel in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The long tunnel is part of the European route E134 highway as it goes up the Austmannlia mountain. The Lateral Road is Bhutan's primary east–west corridor, connecting the towns of Phuentsholing in the southwest to Trashigang in the east. The only way in to Lysebotn is by boat or by the spectacular Lysebotnvegen (Lysebotn road) which connects it to the nearby municipality of Sirdal in Agder county. The long road rises over up a very steep cliff, going through 27 hairpin turns, including one hairpin turn inside a long tunnel that goes inside the mountain. The road was opened in 1984 and it is open only in the summer, when it is ice free and safe. The road has its highest point at above sea level.

Chinook Pass is the border between Pierce and Yakima counties and Mount Rainier National Park and the Wenatchee National Forest. The Everest road is a Chinese road that reaches the North Base Camp of Mount Everest or Qomolangma (name of mountain in Tibetan). The paved road branches from China National Highway 318 at Tingri County, Tibet Autonomous Region and moves through the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve. The road was first built as a gravel and rock road and later paved in 2015. The route is 110 km and first ascends uphill before going downhill with many hairpin turns along the way before reaching the North Base Camp.

At Eidsdal, a ferry is required in order to cross the Norddalsfjorden. The ferry connects Eidsdal with Linge, from where the road passes through a number of small settlements, including Sylte, before running through the valleys of Valldalen and Meiadalen. The northernmost section of the road includes the Trollstigen ("The Troll Footpath"), a further series of hairpin turns which descend a particularly steep mountain. From the Trollstigen the road runs in an approximate north-west direction before terminating at the junction with the E136 highway near Åndalsnes.

During the high tourist-season in the summer, the Municipality of Pylaros runs a public bus service to and from Myrtos Beach, departing from the harbour area in Agia Efimia. Newberry National Volcanic Monument consists of four primary visitor destinations: Lava Butte, Lava River Cave, Lava Cast Forest, and Newberry Caldera. The highest point within the monument is the summit of Paulina Peak at , with views of the Oregon Cascades and the high desert. Paulina Peak may be accessed by road during the summer months, and as the road is both steep and rough, with hairpin turns towards the summit, trailers or long vehicles are discouraged. The summit area of Newberry Volcano holds two alpine lakes full of trout, East Lake and Paulina Lake.

State Route 251 (SR 251), now known as the Northport–Boundary Road or Boundary Highway, began in Northport at an at-grade intersection at Center Street, known as SR 25\. The highway turned north from SR 25 and followed the Columbia River upstream as well a railroad owned by the Kettle Falls International Railway. The highway traveled northeast, then east through a series of hairpin turns before turning north to Boundary, an unincorporated community in Stevens County, where SR 251 entered Canadian customs and continued into British Columbia as British Columbia Highway 22A (BC 22A).

NC 80 at Buck Creek Gap NC 80 is a two-lane mountain highway between US 70, in Pleasant Gardens, and NC 226A, near Bakersville. The highway is popular with bike and motorcycle enthusiasts, because of its hairpin turns and also makes up part of the Mount Mitchell Scenic Drive between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Micaville. Trucks are not recommended to take NC 80, with multiple warning signs posted at each major intersection. In McDowell County, NC 80 begins in the Pleasant Gardens community, located west of Marion.

Much of the highway through the region features hairpin turns, steep grades, and load- zoned bridges. US 58 begins a concurrency with US 221 in Independence, and the routes stay merged through Hillsville, just past the interchange with Interstate 77. Continuing eastward, the route crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway in the unincorporated community of Meadows of Dan before winding its way to Martinsville, where US 58 and US 220 share a southern bypass of the city. The tunnel eliminates the 40-km Kabir Kouh Mountain Pass which reaches as high as above sea level at its peak and consists of hundreds of hairpin turns. The project consists of a main tunnel and eight other shorter tunnels with a total length of connecting the Darreh Shahr-Pole Dokhtar route to the main tunnel. The construction of the tunnel started in May 2010 and was planned to be opened in four years. As of August 2019, the main and connecting tunnels have been dug but the project is yet to be completed.

A work in progress is converting the main routes to highway standards, with the elimination of all intersections. The secondary inland and mountain roads are generally narrow with many hairpin turns, so the speed limits are very low. Public transport buses reach every town and village at least once a day; however, due to the low density of population, the smallest territories are reachable only by car.

Arkansas Highway 23 is a north–south state highway in north Arkansas. The route runs from US 71 near Elm Park north to the Missouri state line through Ozark and Eureka Springs. Between AR 16 at Brashears and Interstate 40 north of Ozark (), Highway 23 winds through the Ozark National Forest and is designated as the Pig Trail Scenic Byway due to its steep hills and hairpin turns. The route has a strong connection with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, connecting fans in Central Arkansas with the Northwest Arkansas area.

The two wilderness parcels are separated by Hutchins Creek. Both wildernesses are managed by the United States Forest Service and are served by the forest's River to River Trail. From Wolf Lake, visitors may choose to drive north approximately 3.5 miles (5.5 km) on Illinois Route 3 until they get to the ghost town of LaRue, Illinois. From here an eastward local road, by means of a series of hairpin turns, provides motor vehicle access up the bluff to the edge of the wilderness area, which is perched atop the bluff.

The highway continues southeast along the coastal bluffs, making hairpin turns to cross several creeks as they empty into the strait. After passing Twin Beach, SR 112 moves further inland and follows a former railroad grade the passes through a rural plain with several communities, including Disque, Joyce, and Ramapo near the Salt Creek Recreation Area. SR 112 passes near the Lower Elwha Indian Reservation and then turns south to cross the Elwha River gorge on a deck arch bridge. An interpretive center was built near the bridge in 2016 as part of the Elwha River dam removal and restoration project.

PA 554 from PA 44 in Washington Township Starting at its southern end in Washington Township, PA 554 runs generally north to North White Deer Ridge, which it climbs in a series of curves and two hairpin turns. It crosses into Armstrong Township at the summit and into the valley between North White Deer Ridge and Bald Eagle Mountain, where it passes the Hagermans Run Reservoir. It then follows Hagermans Run down the north side of Bald Eagle Mountain into the borough of South Williamsport, where it ends at US 15. It does not intersect any other highways.

The route slowly climbs in elevation through the developed part of the city but as it exits the downtown residential neighborhood, the route heads up the side of a hill at a steeper slope and includes some hairpin turns. As it exits the city limits, SR 647 heads through hilly terrain and occasionally passes homes as it travels northwest. Upon entering the community of Morningview, the route turns north and then east briefly as it winds its way into a valley. After passing County Road 2 (former Ohio State Route 798), it turns north again and exits Belmont County for Jefferson County.

The construction of Beğendik Bridge was part of a 1.510 billion investment project launched in 1998 to connect Küçüksu, Tatvan in Bitlis Province via Hizan Junction with Pervari on a long provincial road. This road, with bridge and tunnels, replaces the former very dangerous and long road with hairpin turns winding in high elevation mountainous terrain. Through the Beğendik Bridge, cargo transport between Iran and Iraq takes three hours instead of six hours before. Built in 1916 by the Russian soldiers following the Trebizond Campaign, the road from Of to Bayburt runs on Mt. Soğanlı climbing up to an elevation of above sea level. The route without guardrails includes 29 steep hairpin turns. While the start and end sections of the route are paved with asphalt, the center part is only gravel. It is difficult to travel particularly in wet and dark conditions or by fog and snow, and it is considered as one of the most dangerous roads of the world, even more dangerous than the Death Road in Bolivia.

Green River from Hardscrabble Hill Starting on Shafer Trail from the Island in the Sky mesa, a traveller will encounter hairpin turns, steep grades and cliffs with no guardrails. After a short distance along relatively flat terrain at the base of the mesa, the end of Shafer Trail is reached and the White Rim Road begins at the junction with Potash Road. The first river view is at the Gooseneck Overlook which offers a glimpse into the Colorado River canyon at the end of a round-trip hike. There is no access to the river from the cliff at the overlook.

Soon after the Hogback, the Turks Head butte appears in the middle of an oxbow bend of the Green River. Candlestick Tower and Potato Bottom are next, followed by a round-trip hiking trail to Fort Bottom Ruin and then a steep, rocky section of road at Hardscrabble Hill. Finally, a spur road leads to two rock towers called Moses and Zeus. After crossing sandy dry washes, or arroyos, the White Rim Road ends just outside the national park boundary at the junction with Mineral Bottom Road and its hairpin turns leading one back up to the Island in the Sky.

Perched above the town and just to the south of the highway is Stokes Castle, a long abandoned monument to a prominent eastern family with local mining interests. Passing Austin, travelers encounter hairpin turns and steep grades in the ascent up Austin Summit in the Toiyabe Range. This area is inside the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the first part of US 50 to run inside a national forest since leaving Lake Tahoe. At Hickison Summit, about east of Austin, is the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area, a rest area and campground featuring a walking tour of petroglyphs.

Kentucky Route 2328 is a supplemental road in northern Madison County and southeastern Fayette County. The highway runs between a pair of intersections with US 25 and US 421 on either side of the Madison–Fayette county line at the Kentucky River; US 25 and US 421 run concurrently with I-75 across the river. KY 2328 begins at US 25 and US 421 west of the U.S. Highways' diamond interchange with the Interstate south of the Kentucky River in Madison County. The highway follows Lexington Road as it descends to the river with a pair of hairpin turns.

Dolphy extended the vocabulary and boundaries of the alto saxophone, and was among the earliest significant jazz flute soloists. His improvisational style was characterized by the use of wide intervals, in addition to employing an array of extended techniques to emulate the sounds of human voices and animals. He used melodic lines that were "angular, zigzagging from interval to interval, taking hairpin turns at unexpected junctures, making dramatic leaps from the lower to the upper register." The new section of B.P. Koirala Highway to Kamalamai from Kathmandu opened in 2011 and continues on to Bardibas, though most areas only allow one lane of traffic with hairpin turns. The rest of the route to Bardibas is even and therefore much less dangerous. An old road that connects Dharan through Inner Tarai is going to reopen for the easier movement through the Inner Tarai Valleys of Sindhuli and Udayapur of Western Region to Dharan of Eastern Nepal. Long-route buses run under the local authority in the headquarters which has bus routes to cities like Kathmandu, Janakpur, Biratnagar and Pokhara.

Primeval Whirl, a Reverchon spinning roller coaster In 1997, the first Spinning Wild Mouse roller coaster opened at the defunct Dinosaur Beach pier at Wildwood, New Jersey. Based on the design of the Wild Mouse roller coaster, the ride features a track layout and cars similar to a Virginia Reel, except the ride is made of steel rather than wood, and the seats face in one direction instead of toward each other. The layout of the ride boasts many hairpin turns and small hops. The design, noted for its portability and small footprint, became popular at smaller amusement parks and fairs.

At Colville, SR 20 turns east away from US 395 and continues into the southern reaches of the Selkirk Mountains. The highway forms the northern boundary of the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge and follows the Little Pend Oreille River north through a series of glacial lakes. After entering Pend Oreille County, SR 20 makes a series of hairpin turns to descend into the Pend Oreille Valley. At an intersection with SR 31 in Tiger, the highway turns south to follow the Pend Oreille River, becoming part of the International Selkirk Loop and Pend Oreille Scenic Byway in the process.

The new route down the grade would allow a gradual descent with no hairpin turns down into the Santa Rosa Valley and would be safer than existing routes to the Oxnard Plain and Moorpark. Nearby California Lutheran University is located at the site of the Norwegian Colony. The campus was donated by the Pederson family, who were among many Scandinavian immigrants populating the hills of northern section of the Conejo Valley.

The Cankurtaran Tunnel (), Hopa Cankurtaran Tunnel, is a road tunnel located in Artvin Province as part of the Hopa-Borçka Highway in northeastern Turkey. Situated on the Mount Cankurtaran of Pontic Mountains between Çavuşlu village of Hopa district in the west and Çifteköprü village of Borçka district in the east, it is a -long twin-tube tunnel carrying two lanes of traffic in each direction. The cost of the construction is estimated to be 100 million. It was built to bypass the Cankurtaran Pass at elevation with many hairpin turns, and to alleviate Black Sea Region's access to Eastern Anatolia Region and consequently to Middle Eastern countries.

Dietrich's assigned route (or Rollbahn) included narrow roads – in many places single-tracks – which would force units of the Kampfgruppe to tail each other, creating a column of infantry and armor up to long. The roads would prevent the attackers from concentrating their forces in the blitzkrieg fashion which had served them so well in the past. The main roads designated for their use had many hairpin turns and traversed steep hillsides that would delay his already slow-moving towed artillery and bridging trains. Dietrich knew that a determined fight at one of these critical choke points by even a token U.S. force could seriously impede his schedule.

The trail runs southeast to northwest from trail marker 0 in Washington Park to Northwest Newberry Road, just beyond trail marker 30 on the ridge above the southeastern end of Sauvie Island. The straight-line distance from beginning to end is about , but because the trail includes many switchbacks and hairpin turns, it is long. In 2019, the City of Portland constructed Barbara Walker Crossing to allow Wildwood Trail users to safely pass over West Burnside Street. Wildwood Trail begins in Washington Park near the Oregon Zoo, a light rail stop, the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the World Forestry Center and the Hoyt Arboretum.

The road to Laudat used to be a hair-raising ride up the mountains, around blind hairpin turns with sharp drop-offs into the jungle canopy; however, the road has been improved and may be completed by the time of this writing. Laudat has seen many changes over the past years, including the aerial tram taking visitors from the village up into the high mountains--making possible what was previously a journey by foot. Titou Gorge was also altered over the last decade, and is now smaller and more developed. It is still a swimming place, and small waterfalls of hot and cold water stream into the gorge.

Geometric exaggeration of the hairpin turns and displacement of the roads alongside the interstate are needed to clarify the road network. Exaggeration is the partial adjustment of geometry or symbology to make some aspect of a feature larger than it really is, in order to make them more visible, recognizable, or higher in the visual hierarchy. For example, a set of tight switchbacks in a road would run together on a small-scale map, so the road is redrawn with the loops larger and further apart than in reality.

The Fort de Tournoux is constructed more-or-less continuously up the side of the mountain from altitude to in several levels. The lowest level is the barracks (Caserne Pellegrin) at 1300m next to the main road from the Cols (Larche and Vars) to the village of la Condamine and the towns of Jausiers and Barcelonnette. A battery at this level, built between 1846 and 1862, is called Batterie XII. Linking these with the Fort Moyen ("middle fort", also known as Fort Grouchy) is a road, constructed to allow mules to ascend with carts – so at a maximum gradient of 10% with frequent hairpin turns.

The NY 431 designation continues along the highway to the Union Falls Overlook, a scenic view in elevation about one mile (1.6 km) into the scenic drive. At this point, NY 431 curves to the south, climbing up the western side of both Esther Mountain and Whiteface Mountain. Upon reaching in elevation, a large building at the top of Whiteface Mountain called "The Castle" becomes visible, and Union Falls Pond can be seen more clearly below. The scenic drive continues up Whiteface Mountain to its summit, which NY 431 ascends toward by way of a pair of hairpin turns just north of the peak.

From the point where the road crosses the Coast Range via Heckman Pass in Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park at an elevation of 1487 m (4879 ft) the road descends 43 km (27 mi) of steep, narrow road with sharp hairpin turns and two major switchbacks to the Bella Coola Valley. The descent includes a 9 km (5.6 mi) section with grades of up to 18% (about 1 in 6). The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered on one side by cliffs and on the other side by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails.

Access to the base station by car is by three routes, each culminating with the upper portion of the dead-end Cog Base Road. The advertised, roughly eastbound route uses the Base Road's full length from Bretton Woods. An especially scenic route, initially southbound from U.S. Route 2, follows Jefferson Notch Road, a narrow dirt road with hairpin turns; it rises to the pass, at above sea level, between Mount Jefferson in the Presidential Range and Mount Dartmouth, before descending to its junction with the Base Road. The Jefferson Notch Road is closed to wheeled vehicles in winterand usually before and afterand used primarily by snowmobiles.

Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California that is famous for a steep, one-block section with eight hairpin turns. Stretching from The Presidio east to The Embarcadero (with a gap on Telegraph Hill), most of the street's western segment is a major thoroughfare designated as part of U.S. Route 101. The famous one-block section, claimed to be "the crookedest street in the world", is located along the eastern segment in the Russian Hill neighborhood. It is a major tourist attraction, receiving around two million visitors per year and up to 17,000 per day on busy summer weekends, as of 2015.

The Kancamagus Highway portion of NH 112 begins just east of the town center. The state highway reenters the White Mountain National Forest, following the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River for approximately , then the Hancock Branch for another , steadily ascending as it progresses eastward. Following a series of hairpin turns, NH 112 crosses the height of land at Kancamagus Pass and begins to descend along the Swift River in the Saco River watershed, which it does for its remaining . Eventually the highway leaves the National Forest and enters the town of Conway, where it terminates at Main Street (NH 16 / NH 113) west of downtown.

However, one section through the Black Mountains outside Oatman, Arizona, was fraught with hairpin turns and was the steepest along the entire route, so much so that some early travelers, too frightened at the prospect of driving such a potentially dangerous road, hired locals to navigate the winding grade. The section remained as US 66 until 1953 and is still open to traffic today as the Oatman Highway. Despite such hazards in some areas, US 66 continued to be a popular route. Notable buildings include the art deco–styled U-Drop Inn, constructed in 1936 in Shamrock, in Wheeler County east of Amarillo, Texas, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Part of the Stelvio Pass The original road was built in 1820–25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardy with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of The engineer and project manager was Carlo Donegani (1775–1845). Since then, the route has changed very little. Its seventy-five hairpin turns, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists. Stirling Moss went off the road here during a vintage car event in the 1990s, with an onboard video of his incident being shown on satellite TV. Before the end of World War I, it formed the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Italian Kingdom.

The route's northern part runs through the districts of Trabzon Dernekpazarı and Çaykara, passes by Uzungöl and crosses Mount Soğanlı of the Karadeniz Mountain Range with the Soğanlı Pass at AMSL on the province border Trabzon-Bayburt, and crosses over Çoruh River before joining D.050. Starting on the junction of D.050 in Bayburt, the southern part of the route runs through Maden, crosses Mount Kop of the Otlukbeli Mountains with the Kop Pass at AMSL just south of the province border Bayburt-Erzurum, where a highway tunnel is under construction to ease the route with several hairpin turns. It reaches Aşkale on the D.100 (E80). The route from Bayburt to Aşkale is part of E87.

Midway through the valley, SR 821 passes the Canyon River Ranch, an isolated rest area with shops, restaurants, and cabins that is planned to grow into a resort. Further north of the ranch is the parking lot for the Umtanum Creek Recreation Area, with a network of hiking trails connected via a footbridge over the Yakima River. After completing a series of hairpin turns along the narrowest section of the valley, SR 821 is rejoined by the railroad and enters the wide Kittitas Valley near several vineyards. The highway turns east at Helen McCabe State Park onto Thrall Road and crosses Wilson Creek before terminating at a partial cloverleaf interchange with I-82 and US 97.

A from the intersection, in Turkey Cove, NC 226 breaks-off the first of two alternate routes; NC 226A travels the historic Etchoe Pass Road, as it climbs, with several hairpin turns, up Grassy Mountain to Little Switzerland. The routing NC 226 takes, along Cox Creek, is shorter and less curvy than the alternate route, but it has a steep grade which require trucks to stay slow when they descend; one runaway truck ramp and several turn-offs are along this stretch. At Gillespie Gap, the alternate route rejoins NC 226\. As it crosses under the Blue Ridge Parkway, it also crosses the Eastern Continental Divide and the county line into Mitchell.

View west from the east end of SR 84 at US 220 in Vanderpool SR 84 begins at the top of Allegheny Mountain, which coincides with the Virginia - West Virginia state line and the Eastern Continental Divide. The highway continues west as WV 84, which descends the west side of the mountain to its terminus at WV 92 in Frost. The state highway passes through a pair of hairpin turns as it descends to Townsend Draft. At the draft's mouth at Back Creek, SR 84 turns north and follows Back Creek to Mill Gap, where the highway turns east and follows East Back Creek through its water gap between Little Mountain and Lantz Mountain.

The Col de Turini features every year in the Monte Carlo Rally, held in January, as the setting of a stage. The stage is run from La Bollène-Vésubie up to the summit of the mountain pass, and descending to Sospel, or the reverse trajectory. « La Grande Traversée des Alpes, le guide », supplément du magazine Top Vélo n°172, juillet 2011, Known for its narrow road with many hairpin turns, the Col de Turini is the technical centrepiece of the rally. Until a few years ago, race pilots drove up the mountain pass at night, with thousands of fans watching the so-called "night of the long knives" as it was called, due to the strong high beam lights cutting through the night.

This bridge is a key component of the proposed Interstate 11 project. Through traffic on US 93 combined with pedestrian and tourist traffic at Hoover Dam itself led to major traffic congestion on the dam and on the approaches to the dam. The approaches featured hairpin turns on both the Nevada and Arizona sides of the dam, and the terrain caused limited sight distances around curves. In addition to traffic safety considerations, officials were also concerned about the safety and security of Hoover Dam, specifically the impact a vehicle accident could have on the dam's operation and the waters of Lake Mead. Officials first discussed the need for a new Colorado River crossing that would bypass the dam in the 1960s.

Maurer Söhne introduced its Xtended SC spinning coasters in the late 1990s. The seat configuration is the same as Maurer Söhne's Compact Spinning Coaster, but unlike that model, the Xtended SC has large, twisted layouts with many vertical hairpin turns intended to spin the cars around and give each rider a different experience every ride. Examples include Spider at Utah's Lagoon, Winjas at Germany's Phantasialand, Spinball Whizzer at the UK's Alton Towers and Dragon's Fury at the UK's Chessington World of Adventures. It was a narrow, steep, and winding road and reportedly was seldom in good condition. Numerous accidents occurred on this dangerous road and some of the wrecked cars can still be found in ravines below the route. “Even with a thoroughly reliable driver and trustworthy car,” Motoring magazine warned in 1913, “Pedro Mountain Road is in such poor condition that anyone going this way is simply inviting disaster.” The danger was underscored by a large sign that read: “DANGEROUS FOR AUTOMOBILES—TAKE ROAD VIA SAN MATEO” Motorists who chose to ignore this sign encountered grades as steep as 25 percent in some places. Earlier in the year, the first British Grand Prix was held on a different variant of Brooklands, which had two chicanes along the Finishing Straight but had no hairpin turns. In that race the unready Talbots had been defeated by the Delage and Bugatti teams, but for the 200 Mile race in the absence of factory entered Delages and Bugattis were able to take a convincing 1-2 victory (with Jules Moriceau’s Talbot crashing into a sandbank at around half distance). For the 1926 200 Mile race the circuit had been modified, now with a hairpin on the approach to the Members Banking, cars returning to the Fork to a second hairpin onto the Finishing Straight which included two chicanes, similar to those on the Grand Prix layout.

The first auto polo cars used by the Dedham Polo Club were unmodified, light steam-powered Mobile Runabouts that seated only one person and cost $650 (equivalent to $ today). As the sport progressed, auto polo cars resembled stripped down Model Ts and usually did not have tops, doors or windshields, with later incarnations sometimes outfitted with primitive rollbars to protect the occupants. Cars typically had a seat-belted driver and a malletman that held on to the side of the car and would attempt to hit a regulation-sized basketball toward the goal of the opposing team with the cars reaching a top speed of and while making hairpin turns. The mallets were shaped like croquet mallets but had a three- pound head to prevent "backfire" when striking the ball at high speeds.

The two-lane Going-to-the-Sun Road is quite narrow and winding, with hairpin turns, especially west of Logan Pass. Consequently, vehicle lengths over the highest portions of the roadway are limited to no longer than and no wider than between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun picnic areas which are located many miles below Logan Pass, on the west and east sides of the pass, respectively. Vehicles over in height may not have sufficient clearance due to rock overhangs when driving west between Logan Pass and the hairpin turn called the Loop. Prior to the construction of the road, visitors would need to spend several days traveling through the central part of the park, an area which can now be traversed within a few hours, excluding any stops for sightseeing or construction.

Construction was planned to start near Topock and head northeast through Yucca to connect with the existing highway near Kingman. At the time, the section between Topock and Kingman still followed the steep and winding path through Oatman into the Black Mountains and through Sitgreaves Pass. This section was built across this rough terrain instead of following the more level route to the east adopted by the railroad because the road followed the National Old Trails highway which was for gold mining in Oatman and Goldroad (now a ghost town). It was fraught with hairpin turns and was the steepest along the entire route, so much so that some early travelers, too frightened at the prospect of driving such a potentially dangerous road, hired locals to navigate the winding grade.

Such turns in ramps and trails may be called switchbacks in American English, by analogy with switchback railways. In British English "switchback" is more likely to refer to a heavily undulating road—a use extended from the rollercoaster and the other type of switchback railway.

At the time the 348th began ground support operations from San Marcelino, the infantry had taken Subic Bay and Olongapo and had started east with the objective of sealing off Bataan so that the Japanese, retreating southward from Lingayen, could not use the Bataan Peninsula's defensive strength as did the U.S. forces in 1942. NM 4 approaching Battleship Rock, June 2011 An outcropping in the Valles Caldera along the highway, July 2007 NM 4's western terminus is in the small town of San Ysidro, at U.S Route 550. The route passes through Jemez Pueblo and Jemez Springs as it climbs steeply into the Jemez Mountains and Santa Fe National Forest, and skirts the southern boundary of Valles Caldera National Preserve. On the east side of the Jemez Mountains, it descends even more steeply, on a series of hairpin turns offering views into Frijoles Canyon in Bandelier National Monument, to a junction with NM 501 leading east into the town of Los Alamos. NM 4 itself continues past the main entrance to Bandelier and several Los Alamos National Laboratory sites, as well as the town of White Rock, to another junction with NM 502 east of Los Alamos, where the route ends.

Even five time Tour champion Jacques Anquetil now thought he could do exactly what his countryman Eddy Merckx had done and win the title in his Tour debut. It was because of stages like this that his Directeur Sportif Lomme Driessens felt nervous about including the young rider in the Tour because a disastrous stage in the high mountains can have a devastating effect on the psyche of a young rider. Maertens felt he was ready for this however, as he and his friend Michel Pollentier had ridden Alpe d'Huez twenty times during the off-season to be sure he had mastered every one of the twenty-one hairpin turns. The Directeur Sportif for Van Impe was the young retired rider Cyrille Guimard, and Guimard together with his team captain Robert Mintkiewicz had suggested to Van Impe that he attacked right at the base of Alpe d’Huez and this is exactly what he intended to do.
