The International Rice Research Institute had been conceived in Garcia’s term, and during Macapagal’s term, work on the development of a new rice variety, IR8, began. This higher yield variety was introduced during Marcos’ term as "Miracle Rice" and produced a boom rice production so large that the Philippines was able to export US$5.9 Million worth of rice in 1968.
