She is of Zapotec heritage, daughter of Leopoldo de Gyves, leader of the Coalición Obrero-Campesina-Estudiantil del Istmo (Worker- Peasant-Student Coalition of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec) . She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México but later studied painting at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" from 1991 to 1995. She is one of two prominent female painters in Juchitan, along with Natividad Amador.

She has been a member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana since 1998 and has exhibited her work individually and collectively in Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Japan and other countries.

William Gyves (born July 1867) was an English footballer. Born in Manchester, he played as a goalkeeper for Newton Heath LYR. He made his debut in an FA Cup second qualifying round match against Bootle on 25 October 1890; the first team had agreed to play in a friendly against Darwen the same day, so both sides agreed to use their reserve teams. Later in the season, he made another first-team appearance in the third round of the Manchester Senior Cup, a 2–2 draw at home to Hurst on 14 February 1891.

COCEI Protest In 1981, the COCEI won the municipal election in a coalition with the Unified Socialist Party of Mexico (PSUM) and founded the Popular City Council with the goal of "rescuing Zapotec culture" and achieving urban development with autonomy. The Popular City Council, and the COCEI electoral win, constituted the first socialist city council in Mexico; COCEI member Leopoldo de Gyves became mayor of Juchitán. The COCEI made the Zapotec people the focus of the election, advertising in their language and promoting indigenous culture. The ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party () (PRI) feared that the COCEI demands would create a "state within a state" through their actions.
