Hurricane Lorenzo, also known as Storm Lorenzo for Ireland and the United Kingdom while extratropical, was the easternmost Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record. The twelfth named storm, fifth hurricane, third major hurricane and second Category5 hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, Lorenzo developed from a tropical wave that moved off the west coast of Africa on 22 September, growing larger in size over the course of its development. On September 26, it rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane before weakening due to an eyewall replacement cycle. After completing the cycle, Lorenzo rapidly restrengthened, peaking at Category 5 intensity.

In 2015 Caltrans in the San Luis Obispo area decided to build a new roadway in Prunedale California next to a wetland area where Beaver, Western pond turtles and endangered Red-legged frog lived. The culverts near the newly built road fell victim to damming by the beavers and eventually started to flood causing transportation issues. Instead of Caltrans removing the beavers from the road area, they decided to team up with OAEC WATER Institute to help educate policy makers of San Luis Obispo and come up with a solution that will benefit both parties. The solution they came up with was a flow control device that helped keep the water level low, kept the dam from growing larger and did not affect the surrounding habitat.

Early on October 21, when Lan accelerated north- northeastward along the western periphery of the deep layered subtropical ridge, the JTWC reported that its one-minute maximum sustained winds reached 250 km/h (155 mph), a high-end category 4 of the Saffir–Simpson scale, ranging from T6.5 to T7.0 of the Dvorak technique. For increasing vertical wind shear, Lan began to weaken and undergo the extratropical transition early on October 22 with significant erosion of its eyewall, after maintaining the super typhoon status as well as peak intensity for over one day.
