Like several critics describing the Paris premiere, he devoted a large part of his review to Bernhardt's performance, which he said held the audience "breathless and rapt", but he had little admiration for Sardou's drama: > As to the play itself, I will only add that it is offensive in its morals, > corrupt in its teaching, and revolting in its brutality, and yet everyone > who admires acting is bound to see it.Howard (1888) pp. 97–98 The "unchaste" behaviour of the heroine and the violence and brutality depicted in the play, although relatively mild by modern standards, disturbed not only critics at the time, but also some play-goers. The audience's reaction to Tosca's suicide at the American premiere caused Fanny Davenport to change the ending in subsequent performances with the firing squad taking aim at Tosca while she grieves over Cavaradossi's lifeless body, an ending also used by Sarah Bernhardt when she performed the play in Fort Worth, Texas in 1892.

Servilia consoles him, assuring her son he has done the right thing, but Brutus is too haunted by Caesar's death to take comfort from Servilia's assurances he has both redeemed their family name and saved the Republic. At his home, Vorenus grieves over the body of Niobe; when his children appear, Vorenus turns on them in his grief and rage, knowing that they hid the knowledge of his wife's affair and secret child from him. In his fury, Vorenus curses his family and then storms out into the back alleys of Rome; his loss, combined with his discovery that Caesar is dead (an act he could have prevented) cause Vorenus to collapse where he stands, overwhelmed. At the home of the Julii, Antony angrily threatens retribution on all Caesar's killers, as well as Vorenus for abandoning them; Atia reminds him that Servilia is the driving force behind the murders, and informs him that Vorenus was lured away.

Phelan comforts Jason as he grieves over his father's death, and later comes to his defence when he gets into a fight with Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward) — the boyfriend of Jason's ex-lover, Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) — at The Rovers; in Jason's defence, Phelan pins Aidan against a booth and threatens him before his father Johnny (Richard Hawley) arrives to witness his son being throttled. When Phelan ignores his demand to release his son, Johnny punches him to save Aidan and the pair nearly brawl until they are forced to settle down; Phelan later has another run-in with Johnny and, rejecting his apology, promises to get even with him one day before leaving when Johnny's girlfriend, Jenny Bradley (Sally Ann Matthews), intervenes. In June 2016, Phelan hatches a plot to usurp Jason and takeover his construction company: the Builder's Yard. He first takes advantage of Jason's grievance by implicating him for the murder of his late enemy, Callum Logan (Sean Ward) — an act which leads Callum's close friend, Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell), to break up with Jason after they recently formed a relationship together.
