There are many models for dealing with grief. The Kubler-Ross model describes grieving in five steps or stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance (Kubler-Ross, 1969). In other words, in order to begin grieving one must first endorse the loss, and then express emotion. Their secret meetings continue, with Chuck included. The day after, WICKED finds out that Minho tried to escape, and in front of Thomas, it unleashes a Griever on Minho to show him that anyone who tries to escape and gets caught will be harshly punished. After the horrible experience, Thomas goes back and directs all of his attention to building the Maze. Shortly afterward, the Maze is complete, which means his best and only friends will be sent into the maze first.

The next day, he is attacked by Ben, a Runner who has been stung and left delirious by a Griever, one of the deadly techno-organic creatures that roam the Maze at night. Ben is forced into the Maze and left to die, as there is no cure for his condition. Alby and Minho, the lead Runner, later retrace Ben's steps inside the Maze. Minho reappears at dusk and is dragging Alby, who is stung, but they are unable to reach the closing entrance in time.

That drives Thomas to think that they need memories to get out and so he intentionally gets stung by a Griever so that he can receive the antidote ("Grief Serum") and go through the Changing. It is known that the Changing can trigger memories and sometimes violence. Thomas and the Gladers find out the pattern. The Gladers decide to make a run for the exit since they know that taking on the Grievers is a suicide mission, but nothing is worse than their current fate.

Minho, the keeper of the runners, and Alby go into the Maze to see what they think is their first dead Griever. Alby is stung by the creature, and while Minho is trying to help him out of the Maze, Thomas runs in to help, just as the doors of the maze shut. All three are then stranded in the Maze overnight. Minho, believing that Alby is dead without the Serum, tells Thomas to leave him and just run, looking for shelter so that the Grievers do not find them.

After their miraculous return, Teresa's arrival triggers a series of changes to life in the Glade. People start acting strangely, the sun disappears, the weekly deliveries of supplies stop coming, and the doors of the Maze stay open at night, which allows the Grievers to enter the Glade and to hunt the children. Thomas proposes that the walls of the Maze are not random, but that their movements are actually a code, which leads to the discovery that the Maze is spelling out words. Thomas also discovers that what they previously thought was the Cliff is actually the exit used by the Grievers to leave the Maze ("The Griever Hole").

The second track focuses on the ongoing relationship between the griever and the deceased. Track two mainly focuses on how the bereaved was connected to the deceased, and on what level of closeness was shared. The two main components considered are memories, both positive and negative, and emotional involvement shared with the decedent.. The stronger the relationship to the deceased, the greater the evaluation of the relationship with heightened shock. Any memory could be a trigger for the bereaved, the way the bereaved chose to remember their loved ones, and how the bereaved integrate the memory of their loved ones into their daily lives.

Many types of relationships are not legitimized by society; therefore when one person in the relationship dies, the other may not have their grief legitimized and it can become disenfranchised. For example, following the death of a partner in a homosexual relationship, societal supports can tend prioritize the immediate family, invalidating the significance of the romantic relationship and loss for the grieving partner (McNutt & Yakushko, 2013). Another example may be a former partner, such as the death of an ex-spouse (a person who the griever was previously married to, but eventually divorced). The death of an ex-spouse does not typically receive the same recognition as the death of a current spouse.

If, for example, leaving an offspring alone at a watering hole led to the offspring's death, grief creates an intensively painful memory of the event, dissuading a parent from ever again leaving an offspring alone at a watering hole. More recently, Bo Winegard and colleagues argued that grief might be a socially selected signal of an individual's propensity for forming strong, committed relationships. From this social signaling perspective, grief targets old and new social partners, informing them that the griever is capable of forming strong social commitments. That is, because grief signals a person's capacity to form strong and faithful social bonds, those who displayed prolonged grief responses were preferentially chosen by alliance partners.

Stella and Sam are aided by Daniel, who takes them to meet Griever, an elderly woman who claims that there have been several children stolen from the town since the town's creation, all by a monster she calls the Creeper. This confuses Stella, especially after Shane, one of the detectives that handled Jeanie's disappearance, tells her that there have been no other disappearances in the town in the last sixty years other than Jeanie's. During this an unseen watcher begins to menace Stella. War returns to Earth, where a century has passed since Hell's armies, led by The Destroyer, annihilated humanity and the forces of Heaven. What remains of Heaven's armies have been stranded on Earth and formed into a meager resistance known as the Hellguard, led by Abaddon's lieutenant Uriel (Moon Bloodgood). War is greeted by the demon merchant Vulgrim (Phil LaMarr), who tells him that the Black Tower is The Destroyer's lair, and advises War to find Samael (Vernon Wells), a once powerful Demon Lord, for assistance. Upon meeting Samael, the demon explains that four demons called The Chosen (consisting of the Bat Queen Tiamat, the Griever, the Stygian King, and the Broodmother Silitha) have been chosen to guard the Black Tower, and asks War to kill them and bring him their hearts in exchange for gaining access to the Tower.
