One recounts the time, just before "Greenfly" was published, when he was flattened by an anxiety disorder that left him feeling as if he'd "forgotten how to be"; and the other the medically induced coma he underwent for a case of pneumonia so serious his doctor dubbed him "the sickest man in London" (and his ensuing intensive care unit psychosis, which is just as horrifying as it sounds).

They collect the remaining colonists (whom Markarian has stored as alpha-level neural scans plus complete genetic archives) and prepare to leave the galaxy to re-establish a new civilisation elsewhere, fleeing just ahead of an immense nebular swarm of Greenfly machines which had homed in on Hope as it fled the galactic plane. The novel Absolution Gap contains a reference to entities in a parallel universe (or at least claiming to be from one) facing attack from an agent very similar to the Greenfly. In their world, the Greenfly gradually consume the entire universe, rendering it uninhabitable. There are references that may imply the alternate universe entities are actually the extreme far future of humanity.

She decides that, before she returns to the ship, she will swim with the Pattern Jugglers and warn the people they have assimilated about what is coming. She enters the ocean as the novel ends. The Greenfly threat is described in detail in the book Galactic North. The short story, Galactic North, outlines the origins of the greenfly, and charts their progress until the year 40,000, by which point they have spread to such an extent that humans are forced to abandon the Milky Way Galaxy entirely.

The sweet pea plant does suffer from some pests, the most common being aphids. These insects suck the sap out of the plants, reducing growth. Mosaic virus is spread by greenfly, causing yellowing of leaves, distortion of new shoots, and inhibited flowering. All attempts at containing the swarm have failed. In 4161, Irravel stops at the Pleiades cluster and meets distant descendants of the Conjoiners living amongst a race known as the Islanders, who inhabit the planets in the star cluster.

The music saw a movement away from his previous work as a frontman of a rock group towards a minimalist electronic sound. The tracks "Lord of the Hornets" and "The Greenfly and the Rose" were recorded as demos in preparation for Calvert's Hype album, but they were issued as a single by Flicknife Records (FLS204) in 1980. The band used for this session is a unique combination of former Hawkwind members, except for Gary Cooper who was Calvert's literary agent at the time.

Tabanus nigrovittatus, also known as the greenhead horse fly, salt marsh greenhead, or simply the greenhead fly, greenhead or greenfly, is a species of biting horse-fly commonly found around coastal marshes of the Eastern United States. The biting females are a considerable pest to both humans and animals while they seek a source of blood protein to produce additional eggs. Females live for three to four weeks and may lay about 100 to 200 eggs per blood meal. Affected coastal communities install black box traps in marsh areas to reduce and control T. nigrovittatus populations.

Greenfly first started making music at the age of eight when he taught himself to play the piano. Years later after playing various instruments (including guitar, drums, keyboards to name a couple) in many bands, he got into drum and bass around 1994 after hearing one of the Essential Mixes on BBC Radio 1. From then he got into music production and a couple of years later released his self-entitled debut album on Millennium Records, London. Following on from the global success of this he continued to make music and in 2001 his track "G-Funk" was signed by Good Looking Records.

However, the Nestbuilders and their symbiotic species, the Slugs, reveal that while she was travelling at high relativistic velocities, the Greenfly terraformers were unleashed around the star Ross 128 (the same star that Diadem orbits in "Glacial"), and have since malfunctioned, destroying the planets there and turning them into trillions of orbiting bio-domes filled with vegetation. The inhabitants of the star system failed to stop them and were apparently killed in the process. Irravel says that she cannot provide any information that would help the Nestbuilders/Slugs, and leaves on the trail of Markarian again.

She awakens aboard the mostly abandoned Hirondelle some time later, having no memory of the interrogation. She discovers that almost all of the colonists have been taken, while the handful that were left behind have been cut to pieces in order to acquire their tissues and implants; the valuable Greenfly machines they were transporting have also been stolen by Seven. She finds that the pirates' interrogator, Mirsky, has been abandoned with her, while Markarian has been taken. Irravel does not trust her, but Mirsky demonstrates her independence by violently removing the implanted mind-control device that Run Seven had been using to recruit and maintain his crew.

Markarian is still fleeing her. She learns that the Greenflies are now consuming whole star systems at a massive rate, surging outward in a fractal pattern in massive swarming tendril-like waves made of substantial fractions of the mass orbiting each star. She also discovers that herself, Markarian, Mirsky, and Seven, their confrontation having unleashed the Greenfly upon the galaxy, have receded into the mists of prehistory and become mythologised as primordial figures. The Islanders put on a play, in which Irravel (unknown to the Islanders) plays herself in a highly ritualised performance, where it is customary for a human bearing the by-then common ancestral name Irravel to play the character.

Rhynocoris longifrons has been investigated for use in biological control of three sap-sucking pests of cotton, the red cotton stainer Dysdercus cingulatus, the mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis and the greenfly Aphis gossypii. In general, both adults and nymphs of R. longifrons selectively chose adult P. solenopsis and A. gossypii rather than nymphs on which to feed, but preferred the partially grown nymphs of D. cingulatus to the adults. This predator exhibits a type II functional response, where the rate of prey consumption rises as the density of prey increases, but eventually reaches a plateau and rises no further. Other insect pests which the predator might control include the termite Odontotermes obesus, the brown plant bug Clavigralla gibbosa and the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera.

Macrosiphum hellebori, commonly known as Hellebore aphid or greenfly, is a sap feeding aphid that infests the flowers and foliage of hellebore plants. The whitish- green aphids are about 2–4mm long and form dense colonies on hellebores, coating them with a honeydew that can lead to the growth of sooty mold on the leaves and flowers of the hellebore. This species of aphid only affects hellebores and is most active in March and April when the hellebores are flowering and when few aphid predators are around, though they may infest during any time of the year. Aphids will start their feeding from the outside the flowers, beginning at the leaves and then moving towards the flower petals of the hellebore.

The epilogue reveals that the woman is in fact an older version of Aura (with her "protector" being Scorpio), reflecting on the events that happened after the battle on Hela. Scorpio turned out to be right; the race - known as the Nestbuilders - that wiped out the Scuttlers had been watching humanity and aided them. The Nestbuilders advised humanity to hide with them between the stars, but the humans instead used Nestbuilder weaponry to defeat the Inhibitors and cleanse human space of them. However, in doing so, they created a greater problem: the so-called "Greenfly" machines, self-replicating terraformers programmed to destroy every object in a solar system and reorganize them into trillions of vegetation-filled habitats that orbited the star (behavior that is exactly the same as the threat described by the Shadows).

This story starts in the year 2303, when Captain Irravel Veda of the lighthugger Hirondelle, her second-in-command Markarian, and some fraction of their Ultranaut crew are ambushed by pirates while engaged in an unexpected repair stopover in a cloud of rocks and cometary matter in the charted but uninhabited star system Luyten 726-8. She briefly considers activating the "Greenfly" terraforming Von Neumann machines being transported onboard, which she believes would easily be able to swarm and dismantle the pirate vessel and probably aid in repair as well. She rejects this option, however, and their ship is captured by the infamous terroristic pirate Run Seven. She is tortured to reveal the codes to the security protecting her ship's cargo – twenty thousand colonists' cryopreserved bodies – but refuses due to intense psychological conditioning that makes her view the cargo as her children and do anything to protect them.
