Bukir Bakar Recreational Forest or Hutan Lipur Bukit Bakar was first opened in 1975. It covers an area of 3.14 hectares, within the Ulu Sat Forest Reserve. This recreational forest is a perfect getaway, especially for families. Part of Ms. Wahlstrøm's renaissance garden There are five gardens in the museum representing various periods in time from the mid 17th to the early 20th centuries ranging from simple recreational hobby gardens to greeneries for commercial use. The Pharmacy Garden c. 1750 is 300 m2. and has been constructed around a small house from the 1750s. The garden is designed in the Baroque style with 91 squares each containing one type of flowering plant all of which has been used for medical purposes in the mid-1750s including henbane, thorn apple, mistletoe, hop, belladonna, blue anemones and aniseed.

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors to the Philippine Islands, the district of Santa Cruz was partly a marshland, patches of greeneries, orchards and partly rice fields. A Spanish expedition in 1581 claimed the territory and awarded to the Society of Jesus whose members are known as 'Jesuits'. The Jesuits built the first Roman Catholic church in the area where the present Santa Cruz Parish stands on June 20, 1619. St Thomas Church is an Anglican Church which is also known as the Church of Bangladesh . The church premise was in an area of lush greeneries with the famous Bahadur Shah Park at a stone's throw distance on the south. The north- south axial Nawabpur Road/Johnson Road, the most important commercial street connecting the old part of the city with the new, is on the west and separated the area from the court, Bank, DC's office and Jagannath University buildings across it. In fact the church overlooking the greens is a major focal of the city centre in the nineteenth century.

Nagar has several parks and greeneries, many of which are maintained by the Corporation of Chennai. The 8-acre Panagal Park is the most prominent park in the locality with all the six arterial streets of the neighbourhood, namely, North Usman Road, South Usman Road, G. N. Chetty Road, Sir Thyagaraya Road (Pondy Bazaar), Venkatanarayana Road, and Doraiswamy Road, converging into it. The 4-acre Dr. Natesan Park, opened in 1950, is another well-known park located on Venkatanarayana Road. It is the only corporation- maintained park that has a separate tennis court for coaching children.
