As with Abrud, he showed a special interest in history, romanian and even mathematics. At the meetings of the Literary Society in the school, he was noticed by the teacher Justin Salanțiu, who predicted that "he will become a great writer", in the society he wrote and read some sketches.

Producers plotted a twist where Cal discovers someone else's cuff-link on her bedroom floor, taking the decision out of her hands. Halfpenny said that Alicia was shocked by Cal's discovery because she was not "expecting to get caught" and he "catches her off guard". Halfpenny believed that Alicia knew Ethan was the best partner for her because of the character's home life and previous relationships, but opined that Alicia should "go with her heart" and not "the easy option." The three co-stars got along well with each other and had "a real laugh together" on set.

Despite its critical and commercial success, Hairspray nonetheless garnered some criticism upon its release by individuals in the gay community. Richardson no doubt had been involved in several shootouts with Native Americans while on the plains, but as to actual Old West gunfights, no records are known to exist, his only confirmed gunfight being the one in which he was killed. It is believed that Richardson first arrived in Dodge City around 1874, drifting in and out over time, spending much of his time gambling, and in doing so making that his primary employment. He quickly became well known around the cattle town, and was not particularly well liked, although some sources say he got along well with Bat Masterson. Several around town had known him during his buffalo hunting days, to include Eugene LeCompt and H.H. "Henry" Raymond, who said at best he was an unpleasant man.

Like Mr Rumbold, he was bald. He was 65 in 1974, so was born in 1909. Although he generally got along well with the others, Mr Grainger was sometimes cranky and bad-tempered and would protest and become resentful whenever the menswear department had to share valuable space with the ladies, or when Captain Peacock would nonchalantly mention a perk he had earned despite having served less time at the store than Mr Grainger (such as a visit to the company boardroom). Once he had the opportunity to fill in for Mr Rumbold who was away for a one-month conference (this was a nice gesture, as it entitled Mr Grainger to a slightly bigger pension) but the position went to his head: he took advantage of all Mr. Rumbold's perks (in particular the liquor cabinet and cigars), but imposed strict discipline on the rest of the staff: he threatened to make an adverse entry in Peacock's personnel record and he actually sacked Mrs Slocombe (however, he did repent his ways by the end of the episode).
