Angelou were soon off on the road again, this time as a duo touring Scandinavia and Europe with John Hiatt & The Goners. On their return from Europe the band went into rehearsals for the third album, staying in a wooden hunting lodge in Derbyshire. Recorded both in Denmark and Manchester throughout 2002, Life Is Beautiful was a much poppier record. It was finally released in 2003 under Lerski's own name.

Empath was formed by Catherine Elicson, Emily Shanahan and Garrett Koloski in 2015 whilst the three were roommates in Philadelphia. Elicson had recently moved from Columbus, Ohio, where she had been in the bands Goners and Katherine. Koloski was then the drummer in Syracuse, New York band Perfect Pussy. The trio recorded Crystal Reality Volumes 1 & 2. They began recording what would become Liberating Guilt and Fear in 2016 with Koloski’s former bandmate, Shaun Sutkus.

Starting in June, the group was booked as the support act for Jethro Tull on their summer tour of the United States. When Doores read Woody Guthrie’s autobiography, Bound for Glory, he quit school to head to New Orleans with Snyder where they formed the band The Broken Wing Routine, and attended the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Oklahoma, where they met Missouri native Riley Downing. In New Orleans, Doores met Dan Cutler and formed The Tumbleweeds, while Snyder and John James Tourville met on tour with The Longtime Goners.

After the release of Serenity in 2005, Whedon sold a spec script entitled Goners to Universal Pictures. Whedon was attached to write and direct the film, while Mary Parent and Scott Stuber were attached to produce it. During an interview with Fanboy Radio in 2006, Whedon spoke about the film: "I've been seeing a lot of horror movies that are torture-porn, where kids we don't care about are mutilated for hours, and I just cannot abide them... it's an antidote to that very kind of film, the horror movie with the expendable human beings in it. Because I don't believe any human beings are".
