Ned McGowan Edward "Ned" McGowan (March 12, 1813 - December 8, 1893) was an American lawyer, Pennsylvania assemblyman, Judge of the California Court of Quarter Sessions, poet, Fraser Canyon gold seeker, adventurer, assistant sergeant-at-arms in the United States Congress, newspaper publisher and bon vivant instigator of the eponymous McGowan's War in colonial British Columbia.

Finger was born in Willesden, England, and educated at King's College London. He had a strong literary and musical formation, and was quite active in the Fabian movement. At age 20 he began to travel extensively, visiting first Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, where he worked as gold seeker, guide, and cook for the first sheep farming stations, in the period of Selknam genocide. He moved to New York and London, thereafter, and to a number of cities in Texas.

By the mid-1840s he was producing imaginative designs, sketches of Gothic fantasy and visions compared with those by William Blake. In 1847 he married Mary Hemmings in Paris. By the late 1840s Strafford was suffering from hallucinations and showing signs of mental instability, which was evident in his work. His failing health and a weakness in his lungs led to his emigration to Melbourne in 1851 where he was employed by Thomas Ham to produce engraved illustrations – The Water Seeker, The Gold Seeker and Gold Digger of Victoria – for the Illustrated Australian Magazine.

Shattuck Hotel is a historic building that was built as a hotel, located on the corner of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way in Downtown Berkeley. Opened in December 1910 with the consent of Rosa Shattuck, wife of prominent gold seeker and builder Francis K. Shattuck, the hotel is located near the site of Rosa and Francis Shattuck's former Victorian estate. It has been a City of Berkeley landmark since 1987. It has also been operated as the Whitecotton Hotel and is currently operated as the Hotel Shattuck Plaza.

Learning of the 1848 finding of gold in California, Hayward booked passage on the steamer Unicorn which set sail on April 23, 1849, steamed through the Strait of Magellan, and arrived in San Francisco on August 31, 1849. Proceeding to the gold fields, he "mined as long as his money lasted" and then returned to the San Francisco Bay Area, a disappointed gold seeker. For a while, William squatted on Guillermo Castro's ranch, in Palomares Canyon (). Castro tried to evict him, but William persuaded him otherwise by making him a pair of boots.

In 1963–1964, he appeared as the wandering gold-seeker father, "Doc" Sardius McPheeters, in the ABC western series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters with co-star Kurt Russell as Doc's son, Jaimie. On another ABC series, The Long, Hot Summer, O'Herlihy became the lead star, having replaced Edmond O'Brien in the part of Will Varner midway through the program's one-season run. In 1966, he appeared in the episode "Have You Seen the Aurora Borealis?" of NBC's western series The Road West, starring Barry Sullivan.

Cornelis Willem de Kiewiet (May 21, 1902 - February 15, 1986) was a 20th- century historian most notable for having served as president of Cornell University and the University of Rochester. De Kiewiet was born in the Netherlands, but grew up in South Africa, where his father went as a diamond and gold-seeker and later worked as an employee of the Transvaal Republic's Railway. In the early 1920s, Cornelis earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in history from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and, in 1927, he earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of London. De Kiewiet emigrated to the United States in 1929 when he was offered a position teaching European history at the University of Iowa.
