Banners placed around the city of Torreón on the day of Barrón's funeral at first indicated that Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán of the Sinaloa Cartel had taken responsibility for Barrón's death as the banners threatened journalists and soldiers. However, SEDENA detained five drug cartel members in Gómez Palacio and announced on 11 June 2009 that one of the men involved in the murder said Raúl "Lucifer" Hernández of Los Zetas had ordered Barrón's murder. Three out of the five detained members of Los Zetas admitted to having participated in his murder, as well as Martha Georgina Correa Alvarado, They were later order to stand trial for the murder.

The United States Military Code of Conduct was promulgated in 1955 via Executive Order 10631 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve as a moral code for United States service members who have been taken prisoner. It was created primarily in response to the breakdown of leadership and organization, specifically when U.S. forces were POWs during the Korean War. When a military member is taken prisoner, the Code of Conduct reminds them that the chain of command is still in effect (the highest ranking service member eligible for command, regardless of service branch, is in command), and requires them to support their leadership. The Code of Conduct also requires service members to resist giving information to the enemy (beyond identifying themselves, that is, "name, rank, serial number"), receiving special favors or parole, or otherwise providing their enemy captors aid and comfort.

Kaiji succeeds at beating the Bog after a long battle and Ichijō is sent to the underground labour camp working for 1050 years to pay back the 700 million yen from the Bog that Kaiji won. Months after the events and finally having cleared his debt, Kaiji has been living with Sakazaki and his family until he kicks Kaiji out with 3 million yen in cash. Kaiji then agrees to help the former Forty-fivers Miyoshi and Maeda beat Takashi Muraoka, the president of a casino at his Minefield Mahjong game and potentially win over 100 million yen. After losing sums of money during the game, Kaiji realizes that the game was rigged from the start in Muraoka's favor, with Maeda looking at Kaiji's tiles and giving information to Muraoka and Miyoshi sending false signals to Kaiji.
