The article noted: "Schulz went to Ann Arbor practically green at the game, but by hard and consistent work he has succeeded in winning a place on the greatest team in America, and is the only freshman out of fifty who was able to do so".

The Act replaced the old Statutory Lists system of investments with two sets of "narrow range" investments and a set of "wide range" investments, both covered in the first Schedule of the Act. The first set of "narrow range" investments included Defence Bonds, National Savings Certificates and similar "small" investments, which could be bought at a Post Office and did not require the trustee to seek advice before investing. The second set included debentures in certain British companies and gilt-edged securities, with the trustee expected to seek written advice from a person he believed was qualified to give it before investing. "Wide range" investments included unit trusts and shares in certain British companies, and shares in building societies.

However, Stevenage failed to achieve promotion to League Two following an aggregate 4–3 defeat to Cambridge United in the play-offs; with Morison scoring twice at Broadhall Way, but missing a "gilt edged" chance in the return leg. Subsequently, activating a release clause in his contract, Morison was allowed to leave and, shortly after, agreed personal terms with League One team Millwall in May 2009, with a fee of £130,000 being agreed for the transfer. During his three-year tenure at the club, Morison made a total of 152 appearances, scoring 89 goals. Morison was also included in the club's 'Wall of Fame', which features "the six greatest players in Stevenage's history as voted for by the club's supporters".

M is another character who is more fully realised than in the previous novels, and for the first time in the series he is shown outside a work setting at the Blades club. It is never explained how he received or could afford his membership of the club, which had a restricted membership of only 200 gentlemen, all of whom had to show £100,000 in cash or gilt-edged securities. Amis, in his study The James Bond Dossier, considers that on M's salary his membership of the club would have been puzzling; Amis points out that in the 1963 book On Her Majesty's Secret Service it is revealed that M's pay as head of the Secret Service is £6,500 a year.

Kindersley was Chairman of Lazard Brothers, one of the three houses of Lazard, from 1953 until 1964 and a director from 1965 to 1971. During his service at Lazard Brothers, he was a director of the Bank of England from March 1947 to March 1967, Chairman of Royal Exchange Assurance from 1955 to 1967, and Chairman of Rolls-Royce Limited from 1956 to 1968. He was one of the figures who, as both a Bank of England director and a financier with private interests, was suspected of having taken advantage of advance warning of a change in Bank Rate to sell gilt-edged securities ahead of the public announcement of the rate change. A judicial inquiry was held to investigate these allegations in 1957, to which he gave evidence.

He did not fare so well in the 1902 Australian Cup though, being crippled in the race, for which Macdonald blamed foul riding by Walter Burn, rider of Flintlock. Macdonald had won and lost two fortunes during his long involvement with horseracing and was determined the bookmakers should not have his third, so put it into gilt-edged securities, and thereby lived the rest of his life in comfort and financial security. Others of his horses had significant wins: Kinglike won the 1900 Caulfield Guineas, and Aurous won the 1901 Caulfield Futurity Stakes. Following a visit to England and the death of Isaac Earnshaw, Macdonald began in 1914 acting as racing manager for "The Firm" of sharebrokers and horse owners Clark & Robinson, whose principals, William Clark and Lionel Robinson, were old friends before settling in England.

In the final group game, Del Piero started the match and scored the winner with a notable goal against Sweden, taking it past two players before curling the ball into the top corner from outside the area with a left-footed strike; Del Piero also set up Luigi Di Biagio's opener from a corner. Del Piero made his second start of the tournament for Italy in their semi-final against co-hosts, Netherlands, which Italy won on penalties following a 0–0 draw after extra-time. In the final, he come on as a substitute in the second half and missed two gilt-edged chances in Italy's 2–1 loss to France in extra time, and was criticised by the Italian press. He returned to the international scene in the 2002 FIFA World Cup under Giovanni Trapattoni, after winning the Scudetto with Juventus.

In the two years from 1972 to 1974, the American economy slowed from 7.2% real GDP growth to −2.1% contraction, while inflation (by CPI) jumped from 3.4% in 1972 to 12.3% in 1974. The effect was worse in the United Kingdom, particularly on the London Stock Exchange's FT 30, which lost 73% of its value during the crash. From a rate of 5.1% real GDP growth in 1972, the UK went into recession in 1974, with GDP falling by 1.1%.
