To sum up: absolutely great reporting skills exhibited by Gilly here, Sam is useless, and I can't believe how excited I've gotten about this TV show in the course of the last 10 minutes.

Being a brother of the Night's Watch prevents you from gaining titles — and the vow isn't something Sam has foresworn, even if he has sort of broken it by taking a wife in Gilly.

Before the Night King blew our minds and the Wall, the show finally confirmed what we've all known for the past year — Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, and, as Gilly discovered a few episodes back, he's not actually a bastard, but their legitimate son, named Aegon Targaryen (which is why the show has been namedropping his ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, so incessantly all season long).

But I've been having a conversation with people about this—Hannah Murray [who plays Gilly] being one of them—and we're saying there must be a certain faction of the Game of Thrones fan base who really don't like our storyline—people who come to see people having their legs chopped off and getting disemboweled and huge, sweeping battles may not have time to see two broken, damaged characters falling in love.

Samwell Tarly and Gilly are on a ship headed for Oldtown, with a pit stop for the women and children in Horn Hill, and all through the conversation, intercut with barfing, all I could think was how awkward it's going to be for Sam to learn that his best friend lived, died, and lived again all in the time it took for Sam to empty his guttiwuts into a bucket like a freshman.
