This week, Ahmed Al Menhali, a businessman from the United Arab Emirates, dressed in traditional thobe and ghutra, was forced to the floor and handcuffed by police (see picture) after they received a call saying he had been talking on a mobile phone outside an Ohio hotel "pledging allegiance to ISIS".

Qatari men wear thawbs (a long white shirt) over loose pants. They also wear a loose headdress, a ghutra, which comes in white or red. Around the ghutra is a black rope called agal, which holds it in place. Qatari women generally wear customary dresses that include “long black robes” and black head cover hijab, locally called bo'shiya.

The ghutra is a square scarf, made of cotton, and is folded in a triangle and worn over the keffiyeh. In Bahrain, it is usually red and white checked or all white. There is no significance placed on which kind the man wears in Bahrain, although this selection has implications in other Persian Gulf countries. The keffiyeh is a white knitted skull cap worn under the ghutra.

The traditional Bahraini woman dress is an abaya, a long loose- fitting black gown, worn along with a black cloth on the head called the hijab. Bahraini man wearing the ghutra and agal Bahraini men's traditional dress is the thobe (ثوب) and the traditional headdress which includes the keffiyeh, ghutra and agal. The thobe (or 'dishdasha' in Kuwaiti) is a loose, long-sleeved, ankle-length garment. Summer thobes are white and made of cotton and winter thobes are black and made of wool.

The agal is a thick, double, black cord that is worn on the top of the ghutra to hold it in place. In some occasions, Bahrainis wear a bisht, which is a cloak made of wool, over the thobe. Unlike the thobe, the bisht is soft, and it is usually black, brown, or grey.

Mummy and I depicts a mother, covered in black abaya and scarf while clutching her infant. The painting is based on stories of mothers when the UAE gained independence in 1971. In 2010, she participated in a custom toys exhibition at the Dubai International Financial Centre as one of 100 artists who added individual touches to a 20 cm-high white figurine. Her addition was a skeleton wearing a ghutra and headphones which portrayed the traditional yowla dance.

Men in the UAE often wear the Gahfiyyah cotton prayer cap. Emirati men wear the white Ghutra on top of a Gahfiyyah Cap with a white thobe called a Kandoura or Kandoora. In an effort to strengthen religious awareness for foreign visitors, Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Makthoum the crown prince of Dubai has, from 2012 onwards, requested that all visiting westerners and non-Muslims adhere to Islamic dress code during religious festivals. If full adherence is impossible a simple Gahfiyyah worn during prayers will suffice.

Within the following days, the girl, disguised in traditional male clothing (including a ghutra, agal and thawb) peddled her herbal medicines throughout the neighborhood in the hopes that the man's family would employ her services.
