Women who had common blood pressure problems like preeclampsia and gestational hypertension during their first pregnancy had 12 to 25 times higher odds of having elevated blood pressure in the first year after delivery than women who had normal blood pressure during pregnancy, researchers report in The BMJ.

From laws in Georgia and Ohio that end abortion access at six-weeks to Alabama's near total ban, Texas' numerous proposed bans, and Missouri's proposed eight-week ban (all arbitrary gestational limits with no medical basis), many reading the headlines are feeling the whiplash and wondering where this all comes from.

Participants were divided into three groups: 328 women who had an abortion during their first trimester; 383 women who had an abortion two weeks before the legal gestational limit in their state, and 163 women who were denied abortions because they were past the state's limit and who ultimately gave birth.

The research, which is still preliminary and involved small numbers of women, was led by a prominent pioneer in the field of genetic blood testing, Stephen Quake at Stanford University, who said the test could eventually provide a low-cost method of gauging the gestational age of a developing fetus.

"For women with Uterine Factor Infertility, uterus transplantation is potentially a new path to parenthood — outside of adoption and use of a gestational carrier — and it&aposs the only option which allows these women to carry and deliver their babies," said Kathleen O&aposNeill, co-principal investigator of the UNTIL trial.

"The study's main take home message for women with PCOS is that normal fertility can be restored with appropriate treatment, but that they are at higher risk for multiple pregnancy complications including pregnancy loss, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery and pre-eclampsia," Legro, who wasn't involved in the study, said by email.

And though they turned to surrogacy once again after using a gestational carrier for Chicago following the reality star's previous battle with placenta accreta in her two pregnancies, a source told PEOPLE Thursday that "it didn't work out" for the spouses to use the same surrogate, even though "they hoped to" initially.

This was true even after the researchers took into account things that might influence age at menarche or risk for gestational diabetes, including mothers' education level, physical activity, previous children, a hormonal condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome and body mass index (BMI), a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

When the researchers looked at average temperatures in the 30 days before these women gave birth, they found that the prevalence of gestational diabetes was 4.6% among those exposed to very cold temperatures (14 degrees Fahrenheit or lower), compared to 7.7% among those exposed to very hot temperatures (75 degrees Fahrenheit or higher).

"We already knew that women who had had preeclampsia or gestational hypertension during pregnancy had an increased risk of developing chronic hypertension later in life, but the conventional wisdom was that `later in life' was years or decades postpartum," said senior study author Dr. Heather Boyd of the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen.

"Every individual who performs D&E generally has a 'cutoff' gestational age beyond which he or she is not comfortable due to safety concerns," says Stephen Chasen, an OB/GYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, who also served as an expert witness in the case.

As long as it's a surrogacy-friendly state (New York and Michigan are the only two states that still have laws against surrogacy; both are expected to change their laws to become surrogate-friendly this year), there are no custody challenges in which a gestational surrogate has ever gotten legal rights to a child.

After adjusting for other diet and health characteristics, they found that compared with those who ate no potatoes, women who ate one serving a week had a 20 percent increased risk, two to four servings a 27 percent increased risk and five or more servings a 50 percent increased risk of developing gestational diabetes.

The researchers compared the risk of developing diabetes during pregnancy among women exposed to an average outdoor temperature of at most -10 degrees Celsius (C), or 14 degrees Fahrenheit (F), during the 30 days before their gestational diabetes test to women exposed to at least 153 degrees C, about 75 degrees F, before their tests.

Northam's comments became a nationwide controversy and helped lead to a Senate vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would have required doctors to provide the same care to an infant born alive after a failed attempt at abortion as they would provide for any infant born at the same gestational age.

Research has shown that physical activity during pregnancy has benefits beyond maintaining or improving physical fitness, including helping with weight management, reducing the risk of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, making it easier to cope with labor pain and easing recovery from childbirth, said Dr. Artal, the main author of updated guidelines issued late in 2015.

Staying cool during hot weather is probably a smart idea, says Dr. Booth, but women can also protect themselves from gestational diabetes by following strategies that have been proven to lower their risk -- like achieving a healthier body weight before they conceive, and avoiding excess weight gain during pregnancy by consuming a healthy diet and being physically active.

"Although we found an association with sleep disordered breathing preceding the development of both pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders and gestational diabetes, we cannot conclude that universal screening for, and treatment of sleep disordered breathing in pregnancy would reduce the risks of these adverse outcomes," said lead study author Dr. Francesca Facco of the University of Pittsburgh's Magee-Women's Hospital.

The Stanford scientists who led the paper (and were funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among other charities) ran several pilot studies on small groups of women to determine whether it might be possible to use blood tests to gauge a baby's gestational age and whether a mom may be at risk of premature delivery.

But women who had bariatric surgery between their first and second pregnancies were 61% less likely to experience high blood pressure, 203% less likely to have infants that were large for their gestational age, 63% less likely to have a preemie and 36% less likely to have their baby sent to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) than in their first pregnancies.

They, in turn, relied on a study based on a review by the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine) that recommended several categories of services: well-woman visits, screening for gestational diabetes, counseling for sexually transmitted infections, breast-feeding support, screening and counseling for domestic violence, and — most at risk of repeal now — contraceptive methods and counseling.

Even so, the results offer fresh evidence that women who develop high blood pressure in pregnancy may have a greater risk for heart disease at an earlier age than their peers who don't experience preeclampsia or gestational hypertension, Dr. Abigail Fraser, author of an accompanying editorial and a researcher at the University of Bristol in the UK. "This has potential implications for care," Fraser said by email.

These women were divided into three categories: those who had an early term abortion, those who got an abortion but were cutting it close (within two weeks before the cut off point, which varies from state to state but generally sits around 20 weeks), and those who just missed the gestational cut-off point (by up to three weeks) and were denied an abortion.

"A Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular complications in non-pregnant population," said Shakila Thangaratinam, senior author of the study and a researcher at Queen Mary University of London in the U.K. "This is the largest study in pregnancy to show that Mediterranean diet minimizes the risk of gestational diabetes and weight gain," Thangaratinam said by email.

The state's sole remaining abortion provider, Planned Parenthood of St. Louis, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Colleen McNicholas have filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn two laws that restrict abortion in the state: a "reason ban" that prohibits pre-viability abortion if a doctor knows it is "solely because" of a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis, and various bans based on different gestational ages ranging from eight to 20 weeks.
