The term "Coimbatore Wet Grinder" was given a Geographical indication for wet grinders manufactured in Coimbatore in 2006. Coimbatore is also home to a common facility for the manufacturers of wet grinders.

This village is famous for Kinnal Craft. Recently this Craft has been granted Geographical Indication and its GI tag number is 159.

There are three varieties: jet black, golden and pencilled. The breed's meat has a fat content of 0.73–1.03% compared to the 13–25% of most other chicken breeds. The meat from this breed has a geographical indication (GI Tag) tag that was approved by the Indian government on 30 July 2018.

3 Riberas is a Spanish geographical indication for Vino de la Tierra wines located in the autonomous region of Navarre. The Riverland wine region is an Australian geographical indication roughly corresponding to the Riverland tourism region in South Australia. It is the only region currently identified in the Lower Murray zone and does not have any defined subregions. The region roughly corresponds to the river flats and irrigated lands along the Murray River from just below where it flows into South Australia downstream to Blanchetown.

Sanganer is a town/ Tehsil (an administrative division) situated in Jaipur district, Rajasthan, 16 km south of state capital Jaipur. It is famous for textile printing, handmade paper industry, and for Jain temples. Sanganer prints are one of its own kinds, for the reason that patterns in bright colours are always printed on white backgrounds. Sanganeri Hand block printing received the geographical indication (GI) tag in 2010.

The Department for Horticulture under the government of Karnataka proposed the registration of the Nanjangud banana under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, to the Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Chennai, in order to give the farmers of Mysore the right to exclusively brand their products as Nanjanagud bananas. It is recognized by China as a Geographical Indication Product. Yongfeng chili sauce is made of Yongfeng chili, polished glutinous rice, wheat, soybeans, and salt. It is prepared by boiling, grinding, mixing, fermenting, and aging, and produces a dark red, spicy sauce.

The Kanchipuram silk sari is a type of silk sari made in the Kanchipuram region in Tamil Nadu, India. These saris are worn as bridal & special occasion saris by most women in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh. It has been recognized as a Geographical indication by the Government of India in 20052006. As of 2008, an estimated 5,000 families were involved in sari production.

Mysore Sandal Soap is the only soap in the world made from 100% pure sandalwood oil. KSDL owns a proprietary geographical indication tag on the soap, which gives it intellectual property rights to use the brand name, to ensure quality, and to prevent piracy and unauthorised use by other manufacturers. In 2006, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian cricketer was selected as the first brand ambassador of the Mysore Sandal Soap.

Venkatagiri Sari is a sari style woven in Venkatagiri of Nellore district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was registered as one of the geographical indication from Andhra Pradesh by Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Venkatagiri saris are known for their fine weaving. These style of saris can also be found in the villages of Sengunthapuram, Variyankaval, Elaiyur, Kallathur, Andimadam and Marudhur villages.

Gadwal sari is a handcrafted woven sari style in Gadwal of Jogulamba Gadwal district in the Indian state of Telangana. It was registered as one of the geographical indication from Telangana by Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. They are most notable for the Zari on the saris. The sari consists of cotton body with silk pallu which is also given a new name as Sico saris.

Now, Warli Painting is registered with a Geographical Indication under the intellectual property rights act.

The Karnataka State Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd proposed the registration of Mysuru Rosewood Inlay under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, to the Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Chennai, in order to make it exclusive to the manufacturers of Mysuru Rosewood Inlays whose design and material represent region to use the name Mysuru. It was granted the Geographical Indication status, three years later, in 2005.

However, Sualkuchi is well known for silk textiles both mulberry and muga silk. In fact muga, "the golden fibre" is produced only in Assam and it has also tremendous export potentiality. Such activities are intimately linked with the culture and tradition of the Assamese people since long past. Muga silk was recognized as a protected geographical indication (GI) in 2007, and was granted a GI logo for trademark purposes in 2014.

The all India agarbhati association proposed the registration of Mysore Agarbathi under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, to the Office of the Controller- General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Chennai, in order to make it exclusive the manufacturers of insence sticks who use only local available natural ingredients from the region to use the name Mysore. The Thanjavur doll is a type of traditional Indian bobblehead or roly-poly toy made of terracotta material. The centre of gravity and total weight of the doll is concentrated at its bottom-most point, generating a dance-like continuous movement with slow oscillations. These toys are traditionally handmade, finished with detailed, painted exteriors. They have been recognized as a Geographical Indication by the Government of India as of 2008-09.

Vialone Nano rice has been grown in Italy since 1937. It was developed by crossing Vialone rice with a variety called Nano because of the plant's low height. In 1996 Veronese Vialone Nano rice was given the Protected geographical indication (), under the name of Riso Nano Vialone Veronese IGP. Riverina is an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI) registered in the Register of Protected GIs as a wine region. The Riverina AGI is centred on Griffith and is roughly circular with towns on the boundary including Mossgiel, Condobolin, Temora, Junee, Culcairn, Berrigan, Finley, Deniliquin and Moulamein. It does not extend as far south as the Murray River. As such, the Riverina wine region is smaller than the generally known Riverina area.

The King Valley, or King River Valley is a wine-producing and agricultural region centred on the King River between Wangaratta and the Alpine National Park in the North East Victoria zone of the Australian state of Victoria. There are a number of small towns within the region including Cheshunt, Whitfield, King Valley, Edi, Claremont, Moyhu, Byrne, Docker and Oxley. King Valley was recorded as an Australian Geographical Indication protected name on 12 October 2007.

Australian wine zones & regions Kangaroo Island wine region is a wine region which covers the full extent of Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The wine region is one of five wine regions comprising the Fleurieu zone. The term ‘Kangaroo Island’ was registered as an Australian Geographical Indication under the Wine Australia Corporation Act 1980 on 8 December 2000. As of 2014, the region is reported as containing at least 30 growers and 12 wineries.

Khurja pottery is traditional Indian pottery work manufactured in Khurja of the Bulandshahr district in Uttar Pradesh state, India. Khurja pottery has been protected under the Geographical indication (GI) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. It is listed at item 178 as "Khurja Pottery" of the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks.

The Subak Abian system is ideally suited to the production of fair trade coffee production because the Subak organizes smallholders, which is often a requirement of fair trade certification. Stakeholders in Bali, including the Subak Abian, have created Indonesia's first Geographic Indication (G.I.). The Australian Geographical Indication "Goulburn Valley" has been protected since 29 November 1999. Tahbilk was founded by a syndicate which raised £25,000 to develop the winery. By 1875 trade with England had been established, and the winery was producing the equivalent of 70,000 cases of wine per year. Due to the sandy soil, Tahbilk was able to withstand the spread of Phylloxera, and in 1925 was the only winery in the area.

Singani is distilled from white Muscat of Alexandria grapes. It is produced only in the Bolivian high valleys and is considered the national liquor of Bolivia and a cultural patrimony. Its character and production methods are closest to eau-de-vie but it is classified as a brandy for purposes of international trade. Singani has been declared a Domain of Origin (Denominación de Origen or DO) and a Geographical Indication (GI) by the Bolivian government.

The use of geographical indications is not limited to agricultural products. They may also highlight particular qualities of a product that are due to human factors found in the product's place of origin, such as specific manufacturing skills and traditions. That place of origin may be a village or town, a region or a country. An example of a country geographical indication is “Switzerland” or “Swiss” for products made in Switzerland, in particular watches.

The Department for Horticulture under the government of Karnataka proposed the registration of the Mysore betel leaf to the Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Chennai, under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act (1999). This is done so that the farmers of Mysore exclusively have the right to brand their product using the term Mysore betel leaf. It was granted the Geographical Indication status three years later, in 2005.

Thanjavur Art Plate The Thanjavur Art Plate is an artifact which is exclusively made in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. It is a circular plate made as a gift item. It is a handicraft consisting of metals such as silver, bronze, and copper embossed with figures of gods and goddesses at its center. The artwork has been registered for protection under the Geographical indication of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement.

In October 2009, Traditional Grimsby Smoked Fish was awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Commission, a protection supported by Jim Fitzpatrick, the then Minister of State at Defra.Why smoked fish from Grimsby is now up there with Champagne, Yorkshire Post. 17 November 2009. Kolhapuri chappal Kolhapuri chappals are Indian hand-crafted leather slippers that are locally tanned using vegetable dyes. Kolhapuri Chappals or Kolhapuri s as they are commonly referred to are a style of open-toed, T-strap sandal. In July 2019 Kolhapuri chappals got a geographical indication tag from the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks. There is a wrong perception that only artisans from Maharashtra are involved in making these chappals.

In principle, a similar protection to a geographical indication could be obtained through a collective trademark. Indications which serve exclusively to identify the place of origin of goods are not registrable as trademarks under Art. 6quinquies.B.2 of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (Paris Convention), which has effect in European Union law by Art. 7 of the Regulation on the Community trade mark (No 40/94) and by Art.

Marlborough was established in 2018 as a New Zealand geographical indication (GI) under new legislation. In the 21st century it became popular among tourists in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Nowadays, trdelník is very popular among tourists as a sweet pastry in many countries, mostly in the Czech Republic. A variation of trdelník with an ice cream filling was popularized by Prague cafés. The version from the Slovak town of Skalica (Skalický trdelník) was registered in December 2007 as a PGI (protected geographical indication) in the European Union.

Gundagai is an Australian Geographical Indication for a wine region centred on the town of Gundagai in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is part of the Southern New South Wales zone. The region includes Tumut on the northwestern slopes of the Snowy Mountains, Cootamundra in its north and extends west to Junee and almost to Wagga Wagga. Junee is on the boundary to the Riverina wine region (which also includes Wagga Wagga).

Although it can be aged for a month or more, it is typically eaten after only a brief two weeks. The result is a very soft, moist sausage which can be spread on bread, in a manner similar to some pâtés. Ciauscolo gained Protected Geographical Indication status in 2009. A variant in some parts of Marche is called ciauscolo di fegato, mazzafegato or fegatino, in which pork liver is substituted for a certain portion of the fat.

Plymouth Gin used to be Protected Geographical Indication that pertains to any gin distilled in Plymouth, England, but this stopped being true in February 2015. Today, there is only one brand, Plymouth, which is produced by the Black Friars Distillery. The Black Friars Distillery is the only remaining gin distillery in Plymouth, in what was once a Dominican Order monastery built in 1431, and opens onto what is now Southside Street. Southern Fleurieu wine region is a wine region in South Australia that is located on the Fleurieu Peninsula and the portion of the Mount Lofty Ranges extending north east from the peninsula to near Willunga in the west and to near Ashbourne in the east. It has been protected under the Geographical indication (GI) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. It is listed at item 157 as "Kannauj Perfume" of the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks.

Forman and Sons produces so-called "London cure" smoked salmon, which is protected under the EU Protected Geographical Indication scheme"Brexit Backing Michael Gove Visits Fish Factory", The Mirror, 13 July 2017. The application for protected status was submitted by Lance Forman and was supported by then Mayor of London Boris Johnson (now UK prime minister), who opened the factory in 2009. However, unscrupulous dealers are blending Indonesian coffee with lower priced coffee from other origins, confusing the marketplace. SCAI is part of the joint effort to end this practice by supporting the creation of geographical indications for Indonesia’s Arabica coffee origins with other institutions. Tartufo di Pizzo with the inside visible Tartufo (, ; meaning "truffle") is an Italian ice cream dessert originating from Pizzo, Calabria. It is usually composed of two or more flavors of ice cream, often with either fruit syrup or frozen fruit — typically raspberry, strawberry, or cherry — in the center. It is typically covered in a shell made of chocolate or cocoa, but cinnamon or nuts are also used. Tartufo di Pizzo has protected geographical indication in Italy.

Waipara Valley is a Geographical Indication and sub-region of the larger Canterbury GI, located about north of Christchurch. The valley floor provides a warm micro-climate ideal for viticulture. To the west, the Southern Alps temper the prevailing westerly winds and provide a rain shadow, and to the east, low coastal limestone ridges moderate the cool ocean winds. Mangalagiri Sarees and Fabrics are produced by performing handicraft weaving in Mangalagiri, a town in Guntur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was registered as one of the handicraft in the geographical indication from Andhra Pradesh by Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The Mangalagiri fabric is produced by weaving with the help of pitlooms from combed yarn by warp and woof interlacing. The fabric then undergoes the process of dyeing.

Lechazo asado (roast lamb), shown above, is a typical dish from the province of Valladolid and others castilian provinces. Lechazo de Castilla y León is a protected-origin food product in the European Union consisting of milk-fed lamb meat, produced in Castile and León (Spain). The Geographical indication (GI) was authorized in 1997. The GI encompasses 483 farms from all of the grain-producing counties of Castilla y León, producing more than 167,000 lechazos per year.

Jaynagarer Moa () is a seasonal Bengali sweetmeat delicacy prepared from date palm jaggery and Kanakchur khoi. This variety of Moa originated in Jaynagar city of South 24 Parganas district in the Indian State of West Bengal. It is now a popular sweet, being produced in Kolkata and elsewhere, sometimes with cheaper ingredients and chemical flavours. Jaynagarer Moa was given a Geographical Indication tag in 2015 which will enable the product to be protected from unauthorized uses and piracy.

Incense burning fragrance from its material Mysore Agarbathi is a variety of incense sticks manufactured at Mysore using locally grown ingredients which was found only in state of Karnataka before. This incense has been awarded Geographical Indication tag from the Government of India in 2005 due to its historic background and remote availability of material used. Aptly, Mysore is also home to the world's largest manufacturer of agarbathi - N. Ranga Rao & Sons popularly known for the Cycle Pure Agarbathies .

Tirupati Laddu or SriVari Laddu is the laddu sweet offered as Naivedhyam to Venkateswara at Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India. The laddu is given as prasadam to devotees after having the darshan in the temple. The laddu prasadam is prepared within the temple kitchen known as 'Potu' by the temple board Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Tirupati Laddu received Geographical indication tag which entitles that only Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams can make and sell it.

Another important occupation is tourism and service related segments like hotels, restaurants and local transportation. alt=Agricultural workers in paddy field Kanchipuram is a traditional centre of silk weaving and handloom industries for producing Kanchipuram Sarees. The industry is worth 100 cr (US$18.18 million), but the weaving community suffers from poor marketing techniques and duplicate market players. In 2005, "Kanchipuram Silk Sarees" received the Geographical Indication tag, the first product in India to carry this label.

A bottle of Big Boss cashew feni Cashew feni was awarded Geographical Indication registration in 2009 as a speciality alcoholic beverage from Goa, described as a colourless, clear liquid that when matured in wooden barrels develops golden brown tint. This designation was achieved through the efforts of the Goa Cashew Feni Distillers & Bottlers Association and the Department of Science, Technology & Environment of the Government of Goa. The application of a G.I. for coconut feni has been neglected.

Kaipad fields are salinity-prone natural organic rice cultivation fields in the northern districts of Kerala, India. The traditional kaipad system of rice cultivation is an integrated organic farming system in which rice cultivation and aquaculture go together in coastal brackish water marshes rich in organic matter. It has been included in the Geographical indication (GI) registry in the country which is part of the Intellectual property regime. Ezhome Rice has been developed specifically for this environment.

The buffalo mozzarella sold as Mozzarella di Bufala Campana has been granted the status of Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC - "Controlled designation of origin") since 1993. Since 1996 it is also protected under the EU's Protected Designation of Origin or DOP Denominazione di origine protetta and Protected Geographical Indication schemes. The protected origin's appellation requires that it may only be produced with a traditional recipe in select locations in the regions of Campania, Lazio, Apulia and Molise.

Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government. It promotes the red meat sector and markets the Protected Geographical Indication Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb brands. It was set up in 1990 (originally as the Scottish Quality Beef & Lamb Association) to provide assurance to industry and consumers that animals produced for the food chain met certain standards. It was established on a statutory basis in 2008, replacing the Meat and Livestock Commission.

DOP El Terrerazo is a Spanish geographical indication for Vino de Pago wines produced in the estate of El Terrerazo located in the municipality of Utiel, in the province of Valencia in the autonomous community of Valencia, Spain. The sole proprietor of this estate is Bodega Mustiguillo. Vino de Pago is the largest category in the wine quality ladder in Spain. This geographic indication was regulated by the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government) on September 10, 2010.

Valtiendas is a Spanish geographical indication for wines referred to legally as Vino de calidad con Indicación Geográfica. This is one step below the mainstream Denominación de Origen quality wines and one step above the less stringent Vino de la Tierra table wines on the quality ladder.Analysis of the Wine Sector 2016. It is located in the province of Segovia (region of Castile and León) and borders on the well-known wine region of Ribera del Duero.

Swan Hill is a wine region name protected by an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI). It is named for the town of Swan Hill on the south side of the Murray River in the Australian state of Victoria. The wine region spans the Murray and the north eastern part of the region is in the state of New South Wales. The north eastern part of the region is in the New South Wales zone of Big Rivers.

In 2000, the cheese L'Etivaz was the first Swiss product other than wine to obtain an appellation d'origine contrôlée. In 2013, the certification was replaced by the appellation d'origine protégée (AOP). The AOP logo is visible on the rind. In Switzerland, the appellation d'origine protégée (AOP, protected designation of origin) is a geographical indication protecting the origin and the quality of traditional food products other than wines (wines have another label called appellation d'origine contrôlée, AOC).

This is a great irony in a state that once set up factories to use up its excessive reserves and wears two geographical indication tags on its sleeve on account of its historic association with the precious wood. The company celebrated its centennial on 10 May 2016. It planned a celebration to commemorate the year, and included plans to introduce a Mysore Sandal Centennial Soap to mark the occasion. Karnataka Soaps had an event on 10 May 2016 to commemorate the 100th year.

Eden Valley wine region covers an area in the Mount Lofty Ranges extending from Truro in the north to just south of Springton in the south. The region is bordered by the Barossa Valley wine region to the west and by the Adelaide Hills wine region to the south.PGIBSA, 2014, page 7 The Eden Valley wine region was registered as an Australian Geographical Indication on 15 August 1997. The Eden Valley wine region includes a sub-region called High Eden.

Pirot carpet (Serbian: Пиротски ћилим, Pirotski ćilim) refers to a variety of flat tapestry-woven carpets or rugs traditionally produced in Pirot, a town in southeastern Serbia. Pirot kilims with some 122 ornaments and 96 different types have been protected by geographical indication in 2002. They are one of the most important traditional handicrafts in Serbia. In the late 19th century and up to the Second World War, Pirot kilims have been frequently used as insignia of Serbian and Yugoslav royalty.

Garcinia indica is indigenous to the Western Ghats region of India located along the western coast of the country. Of the 35 species found in India, 17 are endemic. Of these, seven are endemic to the Western Ghats, six in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and four in the northeastern region of India. The kokum variety from the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts from the coastal Konkan region of the state of Maharashtra in India has received the GI (Geographical Indication) tag.

Green pepper of Kampot Kampot green peppers plants Kampot pepper (, ) is a cultivar of pepper (piper nigrum) grown and produced in Kampot Province, and Kep Province, Cambodia. It is a certified geographical indication (GI) product since 2010. There are two varieties, the Kamchay and the Lampong (or Belantoeung), locally known respectively as ‘small leaves’ and ‘big leaves’. The name is derived from the area where it is grown, the province of Kampot, which previously included the later separated province of Kep.

This embroidery product of Kutch has been registered for protection under the List of Geographical indication of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. In March 2013, it was listed as "Kutch Embroidery" under the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks under Class 24 Textile and Textile Goods, and its logo registered in November 2015 vide application number 509 for the dated 8 January 2012.

Alternative methods of grafting were also explored. Due to the special soil conditions at Devanahalli and its Geographical Indication (GI) status, the Devanahalli pomelo can not be planted in other places. The fruit has now made a comeback with the increasing demand, though there are now fewer than 100 farmers engaged in its cultivation. Mahatma Gandhi is said to have tasted this fruit when offered one by a local farmer during his visit to Nandi Hills, a hill resort near to Devanahalli.

The Wairarapa winegrowing region, a Geographical Indication since October 2017, is one of New Zealand's smallest. It contains two GI sub-regions, Gladstone and Martinborough, as well as Masterton and Opaki. Martinborough was the original area planted, on the basis of careful scientific study in the 1970s, which identified its soils and climate as perfectly suited to the cultivation of Pinot Noir. As a consequence, many of the vineyards established there are older than their counterparts in the rest of the Wairarapa.

The Broke area is well known for its boutique wine production and is usually referred to as the 'Broke-Fordwich' wine region (a sub-region of the Australian Geographical Indication (GI)Hunter Valley zone). There is also substantial open-cut and underground coal mining in the area between Broke and Singleton. The village also holds an annual fair in September. Broke contains a primary school, a Catholic church, an Anglican church and a service station with store and post office.

Clare Valley wine region covers an area adjoining the both sides of the Horrocks Highway as it passes through the town of Clare near its northern extent and the town of Auburn near its southern extent. The region is located at the northern end of the Mount Lofty Ranges zone with its southern extent being about north of the Adelaide city centre.PGIBSA, 2014, page 7 The Clare Valley wine region was registered as an Australian Geographical Indication on 25 March 1999.

Mattu Gulla is a widely used vegetable in Udupi cuisine especially the sambar. Mattu Gulla obtained the Geographical Indication tag in 2011 for its unusual and unique taste and exclusive location of production. The production of Mattu Gulla decreased in recent years due to various reasons such as pest attacks and advent of Bt brinjal. According to the Department of Horticulture, it was grown in an area of 67 hectares in 2015, with an approximate yield of 40 tonnes per hectare.

The Department of Horticulture proposed the registration of Bangalore Blue under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, to the Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Chennai, in order to make it exclusive to the farmers in the region and increase its brand value. It was granted the Geographical indication status, three years later, in 2013. This allowed the Bangalore Blue Grapes Growers' Association headquartered in Chikkaballapur to get patent rights to cultivation of the variety.

Still their condition remains abysmal. The black clay pottery was applied for Geographical Indication (GI) tag in October 2013 with support of NABARD of Lucknow and Human Welfare Association of Varanasi. It was registered for GI tag in December 2015 which gives the right to name the product to specific geographic region of origin only. The black clay pottery studied by historians due to its resemble with the Northern Black Polished Ware pottery of urban Iron Age culture of Indian Subcontinent.

In 1977, the Mysore district had about 85,000 sandalwood trees, and production reported during 1985-86 was about of raw sandalwood. To preserve its importance to the economy, according to the Government Gazetteer, the government introduced special laws and regulations. In the erstwhile princely state of Mysore (part of Karnataka since independence), sandal was a "royal tree", with the state government controlling it. This oil has been registered for protection under the geographical indication of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement.

4711 Eau de Cologne 4711 is a traditional German Eau de Cologne by Mäurer & Wirtz. Because it has been produced in Cologne since at least 1799, it is allowed to use the geographical indication Original Eau de Cologne. The brand has been expanded to various other perfumes and products besides the original Echt Kölnisch Wasser, which has used the same formula for more than 200 years. The original 4711 store at Glockengasse 4 in Cologne is a popular tourist attraction.

The local Langham well water was said to give the beer a unique character and quality which enhanced the brewery's reputation. The difficulty in reproducing elsewhere the taste of the beers has led to the premier beer being jocularly referred to as "Ruddles Counterfeit". In 1996, Rutland bitter was the third of British beers to have achieved Protected Geographical Indication status; this followed an application by Grolsch Ruddles. Since Greene King closed the Langham brewery, they can not take advantage of the registration.

Fruška Gora also divides Syrmia in two geographically distinct parts: Wine Syrmia (upper or mountainous) and Swine Syrmia (lower or lowland). Slopes of the mountain were established as one of the most prestigious vineyards in Hungary, ever since the 15th century. Dating back centuries, it is popular amongst Bengalis in general. The traditional art of weaving jamdani was patronised by the Mughals but under British colonialism, the jamdani and muslin industries rapidly declined due to colonial import policies favouring industrially manufactured textiles. In more recent years, the production of jamdani has witnessed a revival in Bangladesh and in 2013, UNESCO classed it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2016, Bangladesh received geographical indication (GI) status for the Jamdani Sari.

One brand of Satsuma shōchū Various brands of sweet potato shōchū uses sweet potato, widely cultivated across southern Kyūshū since the Edo period, as its base ingredient. Originally it was almost exclusively produced in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, but nowadays is made across Japan using locally grown sweet potatoes. It tends to have a strong taste and a distinctive smell; more recently producers have made varieties whose aroma is somewhat suppressed. Kagoshima's has been given protection under WTO rules as a geographical indication.

In 2010, the carpets of the region received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which means carpets manufactured in nine districts of the region, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Sonebhadra, Kaushambi, Allahabad, Jaunpur and Chandauli would be tagged with 'handmade carpet of Bhadohi'. Most of the production is aimed at foreign countries. Well-known carpet types from Bhadohi include cotton Dhurries, Chhapra Mir carpets, Abusan, Persian, Loribaft, Indo Gabbeh but also Nepalese carpets and more recent shaggy type carpets. They are manufactured in various qualities.

A kind of kulen from Slavonia has had its designation of origin protected in Croatia by an organization from Bošnjaci. In parts of Slavonia, kulen is called kulin in Ikavian accent. Croatian Baranya Kulen (Baranjski Kulen) is protected by Geographical Indication (GI) status from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The meat is low-fat, rather brittle and dense, and the flavor is spicy with the hot red paprika bringing it aroma and colour, and garlic for additional spice.

An appellation is a legally defined and protected geographical indication used to identify where the grapes for a wine were grown; other types of food often have appellations as well. Restrictions other than geographical boundaries, such as what grapes may be grown, maximum grape yields, alcohol level, and other quality factors, may also apply before an appellation name may legally appear on a wine bottle label. The rules that govern appellations are dependent on the country in which the wine was produced.

Since 1997, the term "Kölsch" has had a protected geographical indication (PGI) within the European Union, indicating a beer that is made within of the city of Cologne and brewed according to the Kölsch Konvention as defined by the members of the Cologne Brewery Association (Kölner Brauerei-Verband).

Kanihama, formerly known as Gund Kawarhama, is a village situated on the Srinagar-Gulmarg Road in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Kani Shawls produced in the area were given a geographical indication status by the Jammu and Kashmir government to keep shawls made elsewhere from being sold as Kani shawls. Kanihama is surrounded by Narbal Block towards east, Magam Block towards west, Pattan Block towards north, Badgam Block towards South. This Place is in the border of the Badgam District and Baramullah District.

Balsamic vinegar of Modena became a protected geographical indication under EU law in 2000. The Balsamic Vinegar vinegar is a condiment for salad, cheese, strawberries and many other dishes. The practice of cooking the must of grapes can be traced back to the ancient Romans: the so-called sapum was used both as a medicinal product and in the kitchen as a sweetener and condiment. The long history of the Balsamic Vinegar came to us through centuries and now is most consumed abroad than in Italy.

It was introduced two centuries ago. Though it is a symbol of honour, the use of the pagadi has changed over the years and now it is also used on traditional days in colleges. To preserve the identity of the pagadi, there were demands from the locals to grant it a Geographical Indication (GI) status.

Fleurieu zone is a wine zone located south of Adelaide in South Australia. It extends from Kangaroo Island in the west as far north as Flagstaff Hill on the west side of the Mount Lofty Ranges and to as far north as Langhorne Creek on the east side of the Mount Lofty Ranges. It consists of the following five wine regions, each of which has received appellation as an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI): Currency Creek, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale and the Southern Fleurieu.

Kotpad handloom fabric is the first item from Odisha that received the Geographical Indication of India tag, in 2005. The Mirgan community of Kotpad is famous for their exquisite organic dyed textile. They usually weave this textile for "Bhotada", "Dharua" and other motifs of their neighboring tribal communities. Recently, Biswanath Rath, an Indian Writer-Director, has made an English Documentary titled 'Kotpad Weaving : The Story of a Race Against Time' about Kotpad Handloom, dyeing and weaving which has been produced by PSBT in association with Doordarshan.

The gherkins also achieved fame in 2003 with the award-winning film Good Bye Lenin! by Wolfgang Becker. In this tragicomedy, Daniel Brühl already had great difficulty obtaining the Spreewald gherkins that his sick mother (Katrin Sass) dearly loved and which he absolutely needed to convince her of the continued existence of the (in her view) "ideal East German world". Meanwhile, the gherkins can again be obtained under their trademarked name Spreewälder Gurken, which is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in the EU as of March 1999.

A Fine art metal handicraft Bidri ware (the skills and techniques which came from Middle East to India during the 14th century), was popularised in Hyderabad during Asif Jahi region in the 18th century. The Kalamkari, a fine art of Handicraft (originated in Machilipatnam 3000 year ago is a Handicraft of Andhra Pradesh) is also popular in the city.

The Elqui Valley is a wine region centered on Elqui River in northern Chile. The Elqui Valley Denomination of Origin (DO) is defined by the Chilean appellation system, the legally defined and protected geographical indication used to identify where the grapes for a wine were grown. The region lies 400 km (250 mi) north of Santiago, at the southern end of the Atacama Desert in the Coquimbo region. It is known for producing table grapes and other fruits, as well as pisco brandy, Chile’s most popular liquor.

A Vranec from North Macedonia Vranac (), Montenegrin and ) is a variety of grapes and a red wine from Montenegro, Dalmatia (in Croatia), Herzegovina, Kosovo and Macedonia. It is protected as intellectual property and Montenegrin geographical indication of origin since 1977. Vranac is considered the most important variety of grape in Montenegro and one of the most important in North Macedonia (where it is known as Vranec). Vranac berries are large and deeply colored, with its dark berries growing on moderately vigorous and very productive vines.

Cooked Sorana beans with olive oil and pepper The Sorana bean () is a type of cannellini bean grown near the Italian town of Sorana, along the in the Province of Pistoia in Tuscany. Cultivation is limited to an extremely small microclimate area with conditions considered excellent for growing this type of bean, and production is low. Demand is high, and prices are six to ten times that of other cannellini-type beans. In 2002 it received Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) certification from the European Union.

The Trademarks Opposition Board (TMOB; ) is an administrative body within the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) responsible for hearing and deciding certain kinds of cases involving trademarks. These include opposition proceedings to stop a trademark from being registered and section 45 proceedings to expunge (cancel) a registered trademark on the basis that it is not being used. The TMOB also deals with objection proceedings to prevent a geographical indication from receiving protection. The TMOB is based in Gatineau, Quebec as part of the National Capital Region.

Murray Darling is a wine region and Australian Geographical Indication which spans the Murray River and its confluence with the Darling River in northwestern Victoria and southwestern New South Wales. It was registered as a protected name on 16 June 1997. Murray Darling is the second-largest wine region in Australia. Vines were first planted there in 1888, around the time that irrigation schemes made it possible to grow fruit in the otherwise arid landscape through which this part of the Murray River flows.

Njavara rice seed Navara rice is one of the many types of rice found in India, and is a unique grain plant in the Oryza group. It originated somewhere in Kerala, where it is regarded as endemic. In 2007–09, geographical indication status was granted. (Typically, such classification indicates an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is primarily derived from a defined geographical region.) There seems to have been about a hundred varieties of rice but only about 20 types are said to be existing.

Milled Rheintaler Ribelmais, so-called Ribelmehl. Rheintaler Ribelmais - AOC package (AOP since 2013) Rheintaler Ribelmais, Rheintaler Ribel or Türggenribel is a ground product that is made from a traditional type of maize grown in the Swiss Rhine Valley and Liechtenstein. Since summer 2000, Rheintaler Ribel AOP (formerly AOC) has been the only Swiss cereal product with a protected geographical indication. Rheintaler Ribel (GUB) Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, Bundesamt für Landwirtschaft, Verfügung vom 7 August 2000 The name Ribelmais comes from the traditional dish, Ribel, from which it is made.

Hitoyoshi's main product is rice shochu (an indigenous spirit distilled from rice), or kuma-shochu, which is the official name of rice shochu produced in Kumamoto's Hitoyoshi and Kuma District. This shochu must be produced in these areas from Japanese rice and with water from the Kuma River, which runs through the town. The World Trade Organization granted kuma-shochu geographical indication status in 1994. The most popular brand is Hakutake Shiro, which currently holds 50% market share on all rice shochu sold in Japan.

South Tyrolean apples with PGI The trademark South Tyrolean Apple PGI is used for apples which are cultivated in South Tyrol in a traditional manner. South Tyrol is Europe's largest connected fruit-growing region. Since 2005, eleven of the more than one dozen different apple varieties have been awarded the "Protected Geographical Indication" (PGI) seal by the EU and are recognised across the EU as regional specialities. The trademark South Tyrolean Apple PGI is used by all of South Tyrol's marketing companies for export.

Carp is cultivated up to three years of age, with individuals reaching . It is captured in late autumn and put on the markets of Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The peak output corresponds with the Orthodox Nativity Fast period, and almost half of the annual production is sold in the week preceding the common slava (family holiday) of Saint Nicholas (19 December). The carp of Ečka (Ečanski šaran) is a registered geographical indication with the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Serbia.

Hastings River is an Australian Geographical Indication for a wine region in the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales around the Hastings River near Wauchope and Port Macquarie.The region is within of the east coast of Australia, between the Pacific Ocean and the Great Dividing Range. The first vineyard was planted in 1837 by Henry Fancourt White. There were 33 vineyards by 1860, however these declined and there was no wine production between 1920 and 1980 when new vineyards began to be planted.

High Eden is the Australian geographical indication of a subregion of the Eden Valley wine region within the Barossa zone in Australia. The High Eden wine region was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 28 August 2001. It is a somewhat oval shaped area in the western part of Eden Valley of slightly less than 40 square kilometres with an elevation of about 500 metres above sea level, the highest point in Eden Valley. It contains parts of the localities of Flaxman Valley and Pewsey Vale.

The term "Gouda" is not restricted to cheese of Dutch origin. However, “Boerenkaas”, “Noord-Hollandse Gouda”, and “Gouda Holland” are protected geographical indication in the EU."COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 1122/2010 of 2 December 2010 - entering a designation in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Gouda Holland (PGI))". These cheeses can only be made in the Netherlands (although not only in the Dutch provinces of South Holland, in which Gouda is situated) and can only use milk produced by Dutch cows.

Kondapalli Toys are the toys made of wood in Kondapalli of Krishna district, a village nearby Vijayawada in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Bommala Colony translates to Toys Colony in Kondapalli is the place where the art of crafting takes place. It was registered as one of the geographical indication handicraft from Andhra Pradesh as per Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. These toys were one of the variety of toys assembled in the houses during the festivals of Sankranti and Navratri and is referred as Bommala Koluvu.

Ikat's equivalent usage in Malay language is mengikat, which means "to tie or to bind". This silk has been registered for protection under the Geographical indication of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. In 2007, it was listed as "Odisha Ikat" under the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India, with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks under Classes 23, 24 and 25 as Yarn and Threads Tied and Dyed for Textile use, Textile and Textile Goods, and Clothing respectively vide application number 22.

Australian wine zones & regions Far North zone is a wine zone located in the state of South Australia which covers the entire extent of the state north of a line of latitude approximately in line with Crystal Brook, i.e. 33 degrees 21 minutes south. The zone is bounded by the following wine zones to its south: The Peninsulas, the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Lower Murray (from west to east). The term ‘Far North’ was registered as an Australian Geographical Indication under the Wine Australia Corporation Act 1980 on 27 December 1996.

Limestone Coast zone is a wine zone located in the south east of South Australia. It extends south of a line of latitude approximately in line with Cape Willoughby at the east end of Kangaroo Island and it is bounded by the continental coastline and the border with Victoria. It consists of the following wine regions all of which have received appellation as an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI): Coonawarra, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Robe, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and a small number of vineyards located outside the above regions. The zone received AGI in 1996.

In the 1950s, it became more widely available after some local cheese factories began producing it and it can be a useful way of using up the ritagli ("scraps" or "rags") of mozzarella. In November 2016 "Burrata di Andria" became a Protected geographical indication (PGI) product. Established as an artisanal cheese, burrata maintained its premium-product status even after it began to be made commercially in factories throughout Apulia. Burrata is also produced in the United States, particularly in artisanal cheese shops in cities on the East Coast with historically large populations of Italian Americans.

During this period, the area gives off a pleasant scent and is covered with multi-coloured flowers. The gathering process, traditionally a woman's task, requires great dexterity and patience. The flowers are carefully cut one by one and laid in willow-baskets which are then sent to the distilleries. Tourists are welcome to join the rose-picking process, usually on weekend mornings when special ritual reenactments are organized in villages around Kazanlak. In September 2014 the European Commission approved Bulgarian rose oil («Bulgarsko rozovo maslo») as a new Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

Tumblong The area generally known as "the Riverina" is broader than the area legally defined as the Riverina wine region Australian Geographical Indication (AGI) as registered in the Register of Protected GIs. The Riverina GI is centred on Griffith and is roughly circular with towns on the boundary including Mossgiel, Condobolin, Temora, Junee, Culcairn, Berrigan, Finley, Deniliquin and Moulamein. It does not extend as far south as the Murray River. The Riverina region is one of the most prosperous grape growing regions in Australia (particularly in Griffith), along with the Barossa Valley in South Australia.

Rio Maule. Maule Valley is a wine-producing region in Chile's Central Valley and is a Denomination of Origin (DO) as defined by the Chilean Appellation system, the legally defined and protected geographical indication used to identify where the grapes for a wine were grown. The area is located 250 km (155 mi) south of Santiago, Chile’s capital city, and forms part of the Central Valley region. It is one of the largest winegrowing regions in Chile and is also one of country's oldest and most diverse valleys.

Northland is the most northerly wine region in New Zealand, and thus closest to the equator. A Geographical Indication since October 2017, it is also the smallest GI, producing 92 tonnes in 2016 from an area of only under vines. Although Chardonnay is the most planted variety, it is most well known for ripe Syrah red wines, and white wines from Pinot Gris, which together comprise the top three planted varieties. Some Northland wineries are also making wine from warmer climate grapes such as Montepulciano, Chambourcin and Pinotage.

The Auckland Geographical Indication is a small region, with a vineyard area in 2016 of and lies around New Zealand's largest city. The region produces some of New Zealand's finest Chardonnay white wines, which is the most planted variety, followed by the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec that produce Auckland's well regarded red Bordeaux-style wines. Soils are usually heavy clay, or small areas of volcanic-derived soils, and it is the warmest of New Zealand's vine-growing areas. The Canterbury Geographical Indication covers wine made anywhere within the Canterbury region of New Zealand, a very large area of some . In practice, almost all of the region's vineyards are concentrated in a relatively small area around the city of Christchurch, which has prompted the establishment of two more specific GIs within it. North Canterbury is simply the top half of the larger Canterbury GI north of the Rakaia River, and is still under examination, and Waipara Valley, a small area about north of Christchurch and where the majority of Canterbury's vineyard area resides.

The Metz type is smaller, less hard, and less sweet, and has no small red spots on the skin. It is very good for jam, while the Nancy type is better as fresh fruit as it is sweeter. Since 1996 the mirabelle de Lorraine has been recognized and promoted by the EU as a high-quality regional product, with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This label guarantees a minimum fruit size (22 mm) and sugar content, and can only be used in a specific geographical zone of production.

After processing the fish fillets vary from cream to beige in colour, with a characteristic combination of dry textured, slightly salty, and smokey flavour dependent on the type of wood used in the smoking process. Variations in wood quality, smoke time and temperature control the end flavour. The smoking process is controlled by experienced cold smokers trained in the traditional Grimsby method. VdlT wine regions of the Balearic Islands Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord is a Spanish geographical indication for Vino de la Tierra wines located on the north coast of the island of Mallorca in the autonomous region of the Balearic Islands, Spain. Vino de la Tierra is one step below the mainstream Denominación de Origen indication on the Spanish wine quality ladder. 18 municipalities are covered by the region, around 40 hectares and 5 wineries (bodegas) are registered with the Regulatory Body. It acquired its Vino de la Tierra status in 2007.

To authorise the distillation of spirits a requirement was introduced at the parliament at Drogheda in 1556 which necessitated a licence under the great seal. Today in Ireland there are a number of commercially produced spirits labelled as poitín, poteen or potcheen. In 2008, Irish poitín was accorded (GI) Geographical Indicative Status by the EU Council and Parliament. In 2015, in consultation with producers and stakeholders, the Irish Government adopted the Geographical Indication technical file for poitín, outlining the production methods that must be used in order for a spirit to be called Irish Poitín.

Naga shawls (Hindi: नागा शॉल) are traditional shawls with a distinctive pattern (primarily in red and black wool) made by various Naga tribes from Nagaland in India. Naga shawls also known as Chaksheshang shawl gets the GI tag. Geographical indication. they are the 3rd goods from Nagaland to be granted the GI registration after naga mircha and naga tree tomato. While the ‘Chakhesang Shawl’ is listed under the category of ‘Handicrafts,’ the other two is registered under ‘Agricultural’ product under Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999.

In Berlin, hot Blutwurst mixed together with liverwurst and potatoes is called "Tote Oma" ("Dead Grandma"). Other German variants are Zungenwurst, which is Blutwurst mixed with pieces of pickled ox tongue, and Beutelwurst, which is pressed in a linen or paper bag (Beutel). It is listed at item 9 as "Solapur Terry Towel" of the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks. Solapur Terry Towel has unique design and it has global market.

The fish contributes about 12% of the total fish production and about 1.15% of GDP in Bangladesh. On 6 August 2017, Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries of Bangladesh has declared the recognition of ilish as the product of Bangladesh. 70-75 percent of total produced ilish in the world is produced in Bangladesh which applied for Geographical Indication (GI) in 2004. About 450,000 people are directly involved in the catching of the fish as a large part of their livelihood; around four to five million people are indirectly involved with the trade.

Bastar Iron Craft (also known as "Wrought iron craft of Baster") is a traditional Indian iron crafts that are manufactured in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh state, India. The iron-crafting work has been protected under the geographical indication (GI) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. It is listed at item 82 as "Bastar Iron Craft" of the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks. The iron craft skill is passed through generation to generation in Bastar region.

The village of Pipili, Puri district, Odisha, India, is well known for its appliqué work. "Appliqué" comes from the French word appliquer, meaning "to put on". There are two variants to this technique: appliqué, where a fabric shape is sewn over a base layer, and reverse appliqué, wherein two layers of fabric are laid down, and a shape is subsequently cut out from the upper layer, exposing the lower layer, before both are stitched together. It is one of the products which has been granted Geographical Indication (GI) by the government of India (Application No. 86 and 108).

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar (or Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale) is a type of balsamic vinegar produced in Modena and the wider Emilia Romagna region of Italy. Unlike inexpensive "Balsamic Vinegar of Modena" (BVM), Traditional Balsamic Vinegar (TBV) is produced from cooked grape must, aged at least 12 years, and protected under the European Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) system, fetching higher prices.EC Council Regulation No. 813/2000 (BVM has lesser protection under the European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) system.EC Council Regulation No. 583/2009) Although the names are similar, TBV and the inexpensive imitation BVM are very different.

Kuthampally dhoties and set mundu are dhoties and set mundus (also known as mundum neriyathum) manufactured by the weavers in the Kuthampally region in Kerala. This clothing product has been registered under Sub-section (1) of Section 13 of Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 with effect from 13 November 2015. The registration was recorded as per an application made by Kuthampully Handlom Cluster Charitable Society Consortium. The goods coming under the Geographical indication are double dhoti (or, double mundu or double veshti or Kuthampully dhoti), set mundu (or, mundum neriyathum) and neriyathu (or, kavani).

The Geographical Indication of Kumeu is a small sub- region west of Auckland City, surrounding the towns of Huapai and Kumeu, as far west as Waimauku, and east to the southern edge of the town of Riverhead. The area is most notable for its excellent Chardonnay, with well reviewed examples especially from Kumeu River and Soljans Estate Winery. Chardonnay makes up 85% of the vineyard area in Kumeu, with Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir making up most of the remainder. Some of New Zealand's oldest wineries are in Kumeu, established in the late 1800s by Croatian settlers working the Kauri gum fields.

Some of the even older wine provisions by emperor Dušan can be considered as the origins of the geographical indication, while mixing of wine and water was strictly forbidden. After the expansion in the 14th century, the majority production moved to the central, Moravian Serbia. Vast patches of land were turned into the vineyards. In the 15th century, Constantine of Kostenets wrote: "many vineyards were planted, with such a great effort, in this country more than in any other", while De la Broquière noted that in the valleys of the Serbian state there are many villages and good food, and especially good wine.

Budweiser Budvar beer is produced only in the brewery headquarters at České Budějovice according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot beer purity law from 1516, drawing artesian water from wells beneath it and brewed with Moravian barley and Saaz hops, known as a noble hop variety, from the Žatec region. The lagers are matured for a minimum of 90 days. Nick Redmayne of The Independent newspaper contrasted this with 72 hours of lagering (maturation), after which mass-market beers are sold. In 2004, the European Union awarded Budweiser Budvar a Protected Geographical Indication status as a traditionally and regionally produced good.

A geographical indication is a sign used on goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that place of origin. Agricultural products typically have qualities deriving from their place of production and that are influenced by specific local factors, such as climate and soil. Whether a sign functions as an indication is a matter of national law and consumer perception. Geographical indications may be used for a wide variety of agricultural products, such as “Tuscany” for olive oil produced in a specific area of Italy, or “Roquefort” for cheese produced in a certain region of France.

Comber Earlies, also called new season Comber potatoes, are potatoes grown around the town of Comber, County Down, Northern Ireland. They enjoy the status of protected geographical indication (PGI) since 2012 and are grown by the Comber Earlies Growers Co-Operative Society Limited. The term applies to immature potatoes harvested between early May and late July in the area surrounding Comber. This area, sheltered by the Mourne Mountains and Ards Peninsula and protected from frost by the saltwater of Strangford Lough, has a distinctive microclimate, allowing an early potato harvest and a distinctive sweet, nutty flavour.

Anheuser-Busch cites prior registration of the trademark in the United States, and more recently its ownership of Budweiser Bier Bürgerbräu, when making a claim to the mark. Protection can only be sought for geographical indications related to wine, spirits, agricultural products, and food. Meanwhile, the objector is any interested party that may be impacted by a decision to protect the geographical indication in question. In addition, the Trademarks Act sets out the permissible grounds for objection, procedural rules and protections, service requirements, and the timeframe and content requirements for pleadings filed by the responsible authority and objector. The Trademarks Regulations furnish additional information about timeframes and requirements for correspondence, documents, service, evidence, statements, cross-examination, written representations, hearings, and the payment of fees.

Both the interested party (objector) and the responsible authority are required to submit evidence. The objector and responsible authority can also file a statement that they will not be submitting any evidence. If the responsible authority does not take any action at all (either filing evidence or submitting a statement), the geographical indication will not receive protection; likewise, if the objector does not take any action at all (either filing evidence or submitting a statement), the objection will be deemed withdrawn. After both the objector and responsible authority file their evidence, the objector is allowed to respond with additional evidence.

The recipe of magiun of Topoloveni is attested since 1914. The magiun of Topoloveni is produced exclusively in the area bounded by the municipalities of Boţarcani, Crinţeşti, Gorăneşti, Inuri, Goleştii Badii, Ţigăneşti, Topoloveni and Viţicheşti. This region, particularly suitable for growing plums, belongs to the Argeș County in the region of Wallachia. The pruneraies cover about 17,000 hectares.. The magiun became the first Romanian certified natural product and protected by European Union by order No. 338/2011 dated April 7, 2011 the European Commission has recognized a protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication in Magiun of Topoloveni.

The preparation of haleem has been compared to that of Hyderabadi biryani. Though Hyderabadi haleem is the traditional hors d'oeuvre at weddings, celebrations and other social occasions, it is particularly consumed in the Islamic month of Ramadan during Iftar (the evening meal that breaks the day-long fast) as it provides instant energy and is high in calories. This has made the dish synonymous with Ramadan. In recognition of its cultural significance and popularity, in 2010 it was granted Geographical Indication status (GIS) by the Indian GIS registry office, making it the first non-vegetarian dish in India to receive this status.

Roquefort (, , ; ) is a sheep milk cheese from Southern France, and is one of the world's best known blue cheeses. Though similar cheeses are produced elsewhere, EU law dictates that only those cheeses aged in the natural Combalou caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon may bear the name Roquefort, as it is a recognised geographical indication, or has a protected designation of origin. The cheese is white, tangy, crumbly and slightly moist, with distinctive veins of blue mold. It has a characteristic fragrance and flavor with a notable taste of butyric acid; the blue veins provide a sharp tang.

Calçot () is a type of green onion known as calçot in the Catalan language. The calçot from Valls (Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain) is a registered EU Protected Geographical Indication. Calçots are milder and less bulbous than onions and have a length of between 15 and 25 cm (white part) and a diameter of 1.7 to 2.5 cm at the root. Planted in trenches, like an onion, as a single bulb, and successively increasing the depth of the soil around the stems throughout autumn and winter, they sprout into 4–10 shoots, roughly the shape of small leeks or scallions.

Kashmir walnut wood carving is wood carving work that is manufactured in the Jammu & Kashmir state, India. Walnut carving is protected under the geographical indication (GI) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. It is listed at item 182 as "Kashmir Walnut Wood Carving" of the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks. The Juglans regia tree that grows widely in Kashmir region is used for wood carving, and Kashmir is one of a few places for availability of walnut trees.

Mahesh Raj Soni was an Indian Master Craftsman specialising in the traditional art of Thewa, a Rajasthani jewellery making tradition using glass and gold leaves and is one of the surviving exponents of the art form which has roots in Pratapgarh, Rajasthan. He is a member of Rajasthan Thewa Kala Sansthan and has featured in the Limca Book of World Records in its 2011 edition. Soni, who is a cancer survivor, was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. ln order to preserve and bring recognition to Thewa art, Shri Rajsoni secured Geographical indication Registry from the Govt.

Matakana is a small Geographical Indication and sub-region of the Auckland GI, situated about north of Auckland City around the towns of Warkworth and Matakana. It extends from Mahurangi Harbour in the south, and as far north as Leigh, although most of the vineyards are clustered in the hills and valleys between Warkworth and Matakana. On 15 September 2004, protected geographical indication was ratified by the Consejo de agricultura y pesca de la junta de Andalucia and published in the Official Journal of the European Union as Alfajor de Medina Sidonia on 6 March 2007.

The Villianur Terracotta Works are handicrafts made from fine green clay, fine sand and thennal which are hand made by villagers of Villianur, in the union territory Pondicherry also spelled Pudhucherry, India. It has a history of more than 20 generations. This handicraft product has been registered for protection under the Geographical indication of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. In 2011, it was listed as "Villianur Terracotta Works" under the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks under Class 21 as an earthen ware, vide application number 201.

The real solution to the crisis was through wine production under the "vin de pays" label. The bulk of Languedoc wine production received this label by the decree of 15 October 1987, defended by the Union of Pays d'Oc Wine Producers. Cheddar produced in Orkney is registered as an EU protected geographical indication under the name "Orkney Scottish Island Cheddar". This protection highlights the use of traditional methods, passed down through generations since 1946 and its uniqueness in comparison to other cheddar cheeses.

A selection of different marzipan products produced by Niederegger Lübeck Marzipan () refers to marzipan originating from the city of Lübeck in northern Germany and has been protected by an EU Council Directive as a “Protected Geographical Indication” (PGI) since 1996. The quality requirements of Lübeck Marzipan are set higher than those of conventional marzipan and are regulated by the RAL German Institute for Quality Assurance and Classification. For a product to qualify as Lübeck Marzipan, a product must contain no more than 30% sugar, while the Lübeck Fine Marzipan must contain up to 10% sugar. The marzipan manufacturers of Lübeck such as Niederegger, Carstens, Lubeca or Marzipan-Land, however, follow some principles of quality by voluntary commitments, not required by the directive.

In 1999 the association, a group of seven local manufacturers, applied to the EU to have their products categorised as having Protected Geographical Indication, to ensure that only pies made in an area around Melton Mowbray could use the Melton Mowbray name. Northern Foods, a large food corporation, tried to prevent this move over the usage of "Melton Mowbray" on the wrappings of its own pork pies. Northern Foods viewed the situation as unfair and stated in press releases that the MMPPA's dominant member, Samworth Brothers, has made cured and uncured pork pies in Leicester and that the designation area was shaped to include the Samworth factory there. According to Northern Foods, 99% of the pork pies made under the association banner are made by Samworth Brothers.

Margaret River is the foremost Geographical Indication wine region in the South West Australia Zone, with nearly under vine and over 138 wineries as at 2008. Black Forest ham Sliced Black Forest ham Black Forest ham () is a variety of dry-cured smoked ham produced in the Black Forest region of Germany. In 1959, Hans Adler from Bonndorf pioneered manufacturing and selling Original Black Forest ham by retail and mail order. Since 1997, the term Black Forest ham has been a Protected Geographical Indication in the European Union, which means that any product sold in the EU as Black Forest ham must be traditionally and at least partially manufactured (prepared, processed or produced) within the Black Forest region in Germany. However, this designation is not recognized outside the EU, particularly in Canada and the United States, where commercially-produced hams of various types and quality are marketed and sold as Black Forest ham.

Golden delicious apple Apples from Alpes de Haute-Durance received a Protected Geographical Indication which was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 17 April 2010.Apples from Alpes de Haute-Durance obtain their IGP, 19 April 2010, INAO The IGP covers the apple varieties Golden Delicious and Gala from six cantons in Alpes-de-Haute- Provence and thirteen cantons in Hautes-Alpes located between 450 metres and 900 metres above sea level. The quality of these apples is linked to their soil and, in particular, the climate of Haute-Durance with over 300 days of sunshine per year. The prevailing cold nights during the maturation of apples prevents the degradation of acids while a strong diurnal temperature range allows them to yellow and even become pink.

The lamp may also be made in the form of a female figurine holding a shallow bowl in a standing posture, or in the form of branches of a tree; the bowl of these lamps has five V-shaped spouts which hold cotton wicks, and is filled with oil for lighting. The ornamental lamps are widely used in temples in South India. This product has been registered for protection under the Geographical indication of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. On 8 February 2010 it was registered as "Nachiarkoil Kuthuvilakku (lamp)" under the Geographical Indications Act 1999 of the Government of India, with registration confirmed by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks under Class – 6 – Brass Lamps and related goods vide application number 196.

There were over 100 varieties, known by over 200 local names, in Gloucestershire alone.

Three European Union schemes of geographical indications and traditional specialties, known as protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI), and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG), promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs. Products registered under one of the three schemes may be marked with the logo for that scheme to help identify those products. The schemes are based on the legal framework provided by the EU Regulation No 1151/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 November 2012 on quality schemes for agricultural products and foodstuffs. This regulation (enforced within the EU and being gradually expanded internationally via bilateral agreements between the EU and non-EU countries) ensures that only products genuinely originating in that region are allowed to be identified as such in commerce.

European Union rules governing the production of wine ("the product obtained exclusively from the total or partial alcoholic fermentation of fresh grapes, whether or not crushed, or of grape must") are considerably longer than Community trade mark law: the main text, the Regulation on the common organisation of the market in wine (No 1493/1999), runs to over 46,000 words. To be considered as a "quality wine", the wine must come from a specified region and be associated with a "geographical indication" or appellation: indeed, the technical term used in the Regulation is quality wine psr, with the "psr" standing for "produced in a specified region". Wines which do not meet this requirement may only be marketed as table wine. There has been little harmonisation of national provisions within the European Union.

Outside their home country, protecting the AOC status of certain products can face challenges, notably from a legal perspective. Some countries do not uphold a geographical indication system for their own products and thus, products which are labelled AOC in France, for instance, can be confronted on the international stage with foreign products claiming a similar geographical origin, even though it has not been recognized as such by the AOC system. In such a case, France (or another country) may enter into bilateral agreements with other countries, whereupon the signatories accept to recognize a special status to a list of designated products, or it can also seek the development of rules or agreements at the World Trade Organization level. Since each country has its own legal and agricultural framework, the specifics of each trade relationship are likely to vary.

Australian wine zones & regions Lower Murray zone is a wine zone located in the state of South Australia which covers the portion of the state south of a line of latitude approximately in line with Crystal Brook, east of a line of longitude approximately in line with Truro and north of a line of latitude approximately in line with Cape Willoughby at the east end of Kangaroo Island. The zone is bounded by the following wine zones: Far North to its north, the Mount Lofty Ranges, Barossa and Fleurieu (from north to south) to its west and the Limestone Coast to its south. The term ‘Lower Murray’ was registered as an Australian Geographical Indication under the Wine Australia Corporation Act 1980 on 7 December 1996. As of 1998, the zone only contains one region - the Riverland.

Governments have protected trade names and trademarks of food products identified with a particular region since at least the end of the 19th century, using laws against false trade descriptions or passing off, which generally protects against suggestions that a product has a certain origin, quality, or association when it does not. In such cases, the limitation on competitive freedoms which results from the grant of a monopoly of use over a geographical indication is justified by governments either by consumer protection benefits or by producer protection benefits. One of the first GI systems is the one used in France from the early part of the 20th century known as appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC). Items that meet geographical origin and quality standards may be endorsed with a government- issued stamp which acts as official certification of the origins and standards of the product.

The country of Georgia is the first among the EU neighbourhood countries to take an important step towards protecting its local food and beverages from being copied in other countries. The country has a rich history of local and specialist agricultural production and has long been famed for its wines. Names of as many as 18 premium quality local wines have been protected by the use of appellation system, the appellations usually being the geographical name of the area in which the wine is produced. While the appellation system is associated particularly with wine, the geographical indication is a type of intellectual property right which indicates a geographical area and is used to designate the goods originating in that geographical area, specific quality, reputation, or other characteristics of which are attributable to that geographical area and production or processing or preparation of which takes place in the geographical area.

Historically, in Canada, corn-based whisky that had some rye grain added to the mash bill to give it more flavour came to be called "rye". The regulations under Canada's Food and Drugs Act stipulate the minimum conditions that must be met in order to label a product as "Canadian whisky" or "Canadian Rye Whisky" (or "Rye Whisky")—these are also upheld internationally through geographical indication agreements. These regulations state that whisky must "be mashed, distilled and aged in Canada", "be aged in small wood for not less than three years", "contain not less than 40 per cent alcohol by volume" and "may contain caramel and flavouring". Within these parameters Canadian whiskies can vary considerably, especially with the allowance of "flavouring"—though the additional requirement that they "possess the aroma, taste and character generally attributed to Canadian whisky" can act as a limiting factor.

Various wine laws, however, may include appellation-based regulations that cover boundaries as well as permitted grape varieties and winemaking practice-such as the French Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), Italian Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC), Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) and Portuguese Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). In some New World wine regions, such as the United States and Australia, the wine laws of the appellation systems (American Viticultural Area (AVA) and Australian Geographical Indication (GIs)) only pertain to boundary specifics and guaranteeing that a certain percentage of grapes come from the area listed on the wine label. Some wine laws are established by local governments and are specific to that wine region, such as the 1954 municipal decree in the village of Châteauneuf-du- Pape that banned the overhead flying, landing or taking off of flying saucers in the commune which could negatively affect the region's vineyards and wine production.K. A Man O' War vineyard on Waiheke Island, looking out over the Hauraki Gulf. Waiheke Island is an island east of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf, and is a Geographical Indication within the larger Auckland GI. It has a dry and warm meso-climate, and is primarily planted in French red grape varieties: Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the white grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. The Bordeaux style red wines that are produced are considered to be significantly ripe and full bodied, and some of the best in New Zealand. The “Larose” from Stonyridge Estate has an international reputation and is often compared with some of the best Bordeaux wine in the world, and comparing favourably with the likes of Château Latour and Château Mouton-Rothschild. Other notable wine producers are Destiny Bay Vineyards (“Magna Praemia”), Obsidian Vineyard, Peacock Sky, Man O'War (“Dreadnought” Syrah), Cable Bay, Mudbrick and Te Motu.

In an opposition proceeding, any third party can claim that the trademark is not "registrable" on the basis that it is the name of a person who is living or who has recently died (i.e., in the past 30 years), it describes the goods or services (either correctly or misleadingly), it is the actual name of the good or service (in English, French, or any other language), it is confusing with an already existing registered trademark, it is a prohibited mark (e.g., symbols used by governments, public institutions, humanitarian/international organizations, and the Olympics), it contains a misleading use of a geographical indication for wines/spirits or agricultural products/food, and/or it pertains to the utilitarian features or functions of the good or service. A third party can also oppose a trademark on the basis that it is not "distinctive" in the sense that it does not distinguish the goods and services from those of others.

According to section 2 (1)(e) of the Act, Geographical indication has been defined as "an indication which identifies such goods as agricultural goods, natural goods or manufactured goods as originating, or manufactured in the territory of a country, or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of such goods is essentially attributable to its geographical origin and in case where such goods are manufactured goods one of the activities of either the production or of processing or preparation of the goods concerned takes place in such territory, region or locality, as the case may be."Section 1 (3)(e) of Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 Some of the registered geographical indications includes, agricultural goods like Darjeeling tea, Malabar Pepper, Bangalore Blue Grapes, manufactured goods like Pochampalli Ikat, Kancheepuram Silk, solapuri chadars Bagh Prints, Madhubani paintings etc. The complete list is available at List of Geographical Indications in India.

Kampot pepper cultivation has a long history and was first described in the 13th century, during the Angkorian era, when the Chinese diplomat Zhou Daguan visited the area. Modern intensive production was initiated under the French colonial rule in the 1870s and at the beginning of the 20th century, Cambodia harvested around 8,000 tons of Kampot pepper annually. In the 1960s, there were still 1 million pepper poles in Kampot, producing around 3,000 tons per year, but the production was severely affected by the Cambodian civil war and only 4 tons per year were harvested by the end of the 1990s. Kampot pepper production slowly gained momentum in the 2000s when previous pepper farmers gradually returned to their lands. As of July 2015, six districts in the southern province of Kampot have pepper farms, while the spice’s overseas market consists mostly of Europe, the United States, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. As the first Cambodian product, Kampot pepper obtained the World Trade Organization’s Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2010, tying the quality of the product to its origin.

The others are: Vin de Pays du Comté Tolosan (south-west), Vin de Pays de Méditerranée (south-east, Provence and Corsica) and Vin de Pays des Comtés Rhodaniens (Rhone valley). Vin de Pays Terres du Midi, approved in mid-2018 for certain blended wines produced in Languedoc and Roussillon.
