The Shape of Training was a review of postgraduate medical education and training in the United Kingdom, which reported in 2013. The review was undertaken to consider workforce issues, such as the balance between specialisation and generalism in medicine. The review was supported by a range of organisations concerned with medical education and had an independent chair, Professor Sir David Greenaway.

With the advent of the industrial age, cultural norms have shifted in favor of specialization. Indeed, in the modern day, the more narrow the specialization, the higher the pay and respect accorded, for example: PhD graduates, and specialized lawyers, doctors, and engineers. The aphorism Jack of all trades, master of none emphasizes this. Older emphasis towards generalism and multiple potentials such as Renaissance humanism and the Renaissance man were replaced.

Gilles was elected by the members of RCGP's Scottish Council to be chair, taking up the position in November 2010. His priorities as chair were to promote generalism and leadership in general practice. During his time as chair of RCGP's Scottish council he spoke out about health inequalities and about the support needed for GP practices to improve quality. In October 2013 he travelled to the Western Isles to unveil a memorial to a dedicated family of doctors.

Apicystis bombi, a pathogenic protozoan, has been recently found in Bombus ruderatus species in Argentina. Apicystis bombi can have many negative effects in bee populations due to it high virulence, its generalism for many different bumblebee species, and its ability to affect both commercially produced and native born colonies. Apicystis bombi can cause extreme physical and behavior effects within colonies, along with inhibiting colony foundation, both of which increase mortality. This parasite is thought to have been contracted in B. ruderatus due to the interaction with another invasive species, Bombus terrestris.

In 1952, as a result of the formation of the new College for General Practitioners founded particularly by John Hunt and Fraser Rose, Horder became one of its Foundation Associates. Horder was an advocate of generalism and in 1952, used the example of James Mackenzie, founder of the London Hospital's cardiac department and generalist to argue his point, asserting the importance of protecting generalists in an age of mounting specialism.

The Superstroke Art Movement is a direct decedent of the concept of Generalism, and according to Bo, it is also greatly influenced by the Superflat, the Japanese Art Movement founded by Takashi Murakami. Of the six major ethical systems (antinomianism, situationalism, generalism, unqualified absolutism, conflicting absolutism, and graded absolutism), Geisler advocated graded absolutism, which is a theory of moral absolutism which affirms that in moral conflicts we are obligated to perform the higher moral duty. Moral absolutism is the ethical view that certain actions are absolutely right or wrong regardless of other contexts such as their consequences or the intentions behind them. Graded absolutism is moral absolutism but clarifies that a moral absolute, like "Do not kill", can be greater or lesser than another moral absolute, like "Do not lie".
