No one is judging you if you need to rewatch the season before diving into season 4 — between Gryphons and Gargoyles, Archie (KJ Apa) running from Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos)... and getting attacked by a bear, and Betty's mom (Mädchen Amick) being ensnared by a cult, there was a lot going on, so the details might be fuzzy five months later.

He was a painter of beautiful pictures who took me and my brother Nicky to Central Park; taught us how to ride the subway and hail a taxi; and took us to Greenwich Village and Little Italy and for walks near their apartment in Midtown Manhattan, pointing out lovely Tudor City buildings, gargoyles and a homeless woman who held an oil can wrapped in a baby blanket.

After a winding series of 22 episodes that saw some of the show's weirdest, strongest storylines (the cult-like hold of a role-playing game called Griffins & Gargoyles; Archie's prison break) as well as some of its most tedious, inexplicable detours (Archie's boxing gig; endless Hiram Lodge real estate shenanigans), the season finale ended, as the show often does, with a killer teaser for what might happen next.

Armed with Photoshop and surrealistic creativity, Mr. Vadukul (pronounced vah-DOO-kull) might use ghostly effects or incorporate allusions, in one case to World War II. For the January 2000 cover of The Source, then the leading hip-hop magazine, he surrounded Jay-Z with skyscraper gargoyles and thinly attired futuristic models — references to the classic 1927 film "Metropolis," Fritz Lang's depiction of the clash between man and machines.
