As in other movies in the franchise, people and creatures get ripped apart and eaten, but the staging ratchets up the gothic horror stakes; at one point, a dinosaur stands on the roof of the mansion in a nighttime lightning storm and roars at the sky, looking precisely like a gargoyle come to life.

But Riverdale, bless its batshit heart, gives us the gift of ending "The Midnight Club" with Jughead locked in an underground survivalist bunker, strung out on Gryphons and Gargoyles (in this universe, role-playing games apparently have known hallucinogenic properties), raving about how he's about to ascend to the next level and meet the Gargoyle King.

Unlike Ms. Townsend's book, this musical allows us to experience the point of view of other characters, including Adrian's restless mum (Kelly Price), who is having an affair with her next door neighbor (a hilarious John Hopkins, who doubles as a gargoyle school principal); Adrian's lager-loving dad (Dean Chisnall) and a husband-poaching good-time gal (Lara Denning).
