He died on 9 November 1892, aged 81 and following an elaborate funeral was buried in Torquay Cemetery, in the grave of his first wife, marked with a large obelisk and inscribed: "William Francis Splatt - First Mayor of Torquay - Born at Northwood in the County of Devon - Died at The Elms Torquay - Full of Years and Honour".

The left-hand panel depicts figures from local history, the right-hand panel members of the church of the time (1952–53). Above the River Thames rises the figure of Christ. In the graveyard is an unusual pyramidal tomb for John Greg (1716–1795), plantation owner in Dominica, and his wife Catharine who died at Hampton in 1819 "full of years and of benevolence".

The Graff walks off into the maze yelling like a madman as the sounds of one of his previous battles resound around him, before exploding. After leaving the Catacombs, the Doctor, Romana, and K9 dematerialise in the TARDIS. Garron and Unstoffe claim the Graff's deserted ship, full of years of plunder, while the Doctor and Romana transform the jethrik into the first piece of the Key to Time.

The Tremont was managed then by Thomas Barry, who died on February 11, 1876, full of years and honors. Gilbert remained at the Tremont Theatre five years. The versatility of his talents and the variety of his efforts at that time are denoted by the list of parts which he acted during the first season with Barry. This includes Master Walter, Isaac of York, Sir Peter Teazle, Pizarro, Iago, Sir Edward Mortimer, Admiral Kingston, Lieutenant Worthington, Sir Robert Bramble, Polonius, Uncle John, Tom Noddy, Macduff, Mr. Dornton, Squeers, King Henry the Sixth, Adam, Malec, Kent and Rolanio.
