The crossing tower originally also fulfilled the function of a sanctuary, making it a sanctuary tower, a widely found building type in mediaeval country churches. As one of the few preserved 11th-century churches in the Palatinate and because of its immediate proximity to the stylistically similar Limburg Monastery church near Bad Dürkheim and to Speyer Cathedral, the Niederkirchen parish church is of special importance to art history.

In the early 18th century, hussar cavalry became popular amongst the European powers, and a tarsoly was often a part of the accoutrements. The German name sabretache was adopted, tache meaning "pocket". It fulfilled the function of a pocket, which were absent from the tight fitting uniform of the hussar style. Part of the wartime function of the light cavalry was to deliver orders and dispatches; the sabertache was well suited to hold these.

It also probably fulfilled the function of a border fortress in this Franconian-Bavarian border region. For that it was extended with the construction of several defensive ramparts, in order to create room for troops to be quartered. Traces of these outer ramparts are still visible.

In addition, the small Construction Corps grew from about 300 men in 1863 to nearly 10,000 men by the end of the war. The former Königstor, which had stood at the beginning of Unteren Königstraße since 1809 and actually fulfilled the function of a city gate, was perceived as a traffic obstacle after the construction of the station and was removed in 1922. Paul Bonatz rescued the shield of Königstor and had it mounted above the central entrance in the platform hall. The large ticket hall was originally intended for long-distance traffic, which was handled on tracks 7 to 16. In 1906, Grumbach had 116 residential buildings. Out in the Ortsteil of Windhof lay six independent farms, and there were three more at the Sonnhof north of the village. In the 1920s, once more gaps in the built-up area were being filled, sometimes with striking buildings, before the Second World War put an end to such work, at least for a while. In 1937, the gymnasium on Gemeinde-Zimmerer-Platz (square), which also fulfilled the function of a village hall, was built by a building bee organized by the gymnastic club. Building activity begun in the 1960s, which mainly involved the area called “Im Grund”, opened up an extensive expansion by the 1970s, one vaster than the village had hitherto known, in the new building zone called “Auf’m Vogelsheerd”.
