Crowe retired at the end of 2008 from working at the club, finally ending his involvement that had extended to over 50 years. In September 2012, it was reported that Crowe had been out riding his bicycle when he suddenly lost control and careered into the Yarra River. A passing jogger, John Greene, who happened to be a lifelong Tigers supporter, dived into the muddy river and pulled Crowe to safety with the help of other passers-by who formed a human chain to get him to the embankment.

In March 2014, police arrested 57 Greenpeace protesters who used a truck to break through security barriers and enter the Fessenheim nuclear power plant in eastern France.

Ted Hui, pro- democracy activist, was arrested due to unlawful assembly. Hundreds of students from Heung To Middle School in Kowloon Tong formed a human chain around the school in support of the school's music teacher. The teacher's contract was not renewed allegedly due to his failure to prevent his students from performing Glory to Hong Kong in a music test. At night, a riot police officer shouted, in what seemed to be mockery of the United States over the George Floyd protests and police brutality, slogans such as Black Lives Matter, I can't breathe towards the camera of a foreign journalist at the protest site.

In September 2011, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) (CPI ML) openly stated its support for her and for repeal of AFSPA, calling for nationwide agitation. Following that in October 2011, the Manipur Pradesh All India Trinamool Congress announced their support for Sharmila and called on party chief Mamata Banerjee to help repeal the AFSPA. The In November, at the end of the eleventh year of her fast, Sharmila again called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to repeal the law. On 3 November 100 women formed a human chain in Ambari to show support for Sharmila, while other civil society groups staged a 24-hour fast in a show of solidarity.

In August, 2014, Bangladesh Islami Chattra Sena’s chief Muhammad Nurul Haq Chisty made the announcement at a press meet that half-day strike across Bangladesh would be observed demanding arrest and trial of the killers of party leader Nurul Islam Farooqi. Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Sena formed a human chain on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway's Ashuganj area on demanding punishment for the killers.

Within hours of the initial attempt, civilian activists formed a human chain around the KPK building in order to prevent police from arresting Baswedan, launched a social media campaign, and held demonstrations which successfully pressured President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to order the ceasing of Baswedan's investigation by the police and allow the police general to be prosecuted by KPK. Baswedan eventually submitted an early retirement from the police force in 2014. Despite the initial halting, the police announced that Baswedan's investigation had been resumed in February 2015. Novel did not respond to two summons that month (from which KPK's acting president had prohibited Baswedan from complying with) and he was arrested in his home on 1 May 2015.

On May 28, 2015, Noloya along with about 70 other LGBTQ immigrants and allies formed a human chain blocking the entrance to the Santa Ana Police Department, protesting for an end to the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants, particularly those who are part of the LGBTQ community. They were calling on the City of Santa Ana, California to terminate its contract with Immigration Customs Enforcement which imprisons trans and queer people in abusive conditions in the Santa Ana City Jail. The police declared the protest an unlawful assembly resulting in 5 arrests including Noyola.

In October 2005, Shapero purchased the Doria Atlas for £1.46 million, the highest price ever paid for an atlas, although this record was surpassed by the Cosmographia the following year. In April 2004, the atlas had been saved from a fire at Wardington Manor in Oxfordshire, when local residents formed a human chain to remove items from the library. Shapero Rare Books owned about 6,000 books, ranging in price from £50 to over £200,000, and £6,000 on average. The business was sold by Shapero to Philip Blackwell, a director of the family business Blackwell Publishing, which had been sold to the US John Wiley & Sons in 2007 for £572 million to become Wiley-Blackwell.

A website was created to support Tabachnyk in position of Science and education minister. It contains open letter to President and Prime Minister of Ukraine “from representatives of intellectuals, mass media and the non-governmental organisations of Ukraine in support of Dmitry Tabachnyk on a post of the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine”. Over 5,000 students in Lviv formed a human chain on March 23, 2010 to protest the appointment of Tabachnyk. Students passed hand-to-hand a large black book in which they “graded” the new minister.Protests mount in bid to oust Tabachnyk, Kyiv Post (March 25, 2010) The book is expected to travel the country to various universities throughout and then will then be presented to Tabachnyk early April 2010.

Human rights organisations protested against the closure. On 19 July 2014 the sex workers, along with representatives of the Sex Workers Network (SWN) of Bangladesh, Care Bangladesh, Action Aid, ICDDRB, HASAB, UNAIDS, Save the Children, BLAST, and ASK formed a human chain outside the National Press Club demanding to be allowed back into the brothel and calling on the government and local administration to intervene on their behalf. On 3 September the sex workers tried to repossess the brothel area but were evicted the next day and a police cordon set up to prevent them re-entering. In late 2014, the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association brought an action in the High Court of Bangladesh, claiming that the eviction of the sex workers was illegal.

The Germans had great difficulty consolidating their new positions, in the dark, under artillery- fire and counter-attack; in the 8th Company area, the troops formed a human chain to pass hand-grenades forward. As dawn broke, the new positions had been dug down to head height but linking the new diggings to the lips of craters was done with great difficulty, because the explosions had thrown a great deal of earth onto the crater edges and British troops were throwing grenades into the craters. Communication trenches were too shallow; soldiers had to crawl along them once the sun was up and many were hit by bullets. The captured trenches had much British equipment in them which was used by the Germans to repulse counter-attacks.

Printed map in the Doria Atlas Having passed through successive generations of the Doria family, and later the British Rail Pension Fund, it was bought at auction by rare book collector Christopher Pease, 2nd Baron Wardington, for £240,000 in September 1988. In April 2004, the Doria Atlas was saved from a fire at Wardington Manor in Oxfordshire, when approximately 50 local residents "formed a human chain" to remove items from the Wardington library while firefighters were still attempting to put out the fire. Though most of the rare atlases contained in the library were saved with little or no damage, extensive damage to the property forced Lord Wardington to auction much of the collection. Repair costs, in addition to Wardington's advanced age and frailty, forced a sale of 700 items from the collection.

The Occupy Buffer Zone camp in the Ledra Street crossing in Nicosia "The Gynaikobazaro" is a market exclusively for women and takes place every Saturday. The buffer zone between the checkpoints that divide Ledra street was used as a space for activism from the 15th of October 2011 up until June 2012 by the Occupy Buffer Zone movement. On 2 September 2014 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot citizens of Nicosia formed a human chain that stretched from the south part of Ledra Street to the north part of Ledra Street and through the UN checkpoint as a symbol of peace and unification. Ledra Street has been the starting point of protesters and activists against the austerity imposed by consecutive Cypriot governments such as cuts in civil service salaries and social benefits after the Credit crunch.

In January 2004, the interpretation of the Protection of the Harbour Ordinance suggested by the High Court (Hong Kong) (高等法院) Judgment of Madam Justice Chu (朱芬齡) was approved by The Court of Final Appeal (終審法院,CFA). Moreover, SPH urged the Government to halt all reclamation works in Central Reclamation Phase III (CR3) and asked the Town Planning Board to conduct a proper review of the plans with regards to the criteria of the judgment proposed. In March, SPH held the "Hand-in- Hand" Rally in which over 10,000 people formed a "human chain" along the Harbour from Central to Wan Chai to demonstrate against harbour reclamation. In July, SPH joined Save Our Shorelines (SOS) and Clear the Air (CTA) to urge the governor to maintain good governance and transparent and fair town planning process.

Vedanta has been criticised by human rights and activist groups, including Survival International, Amnesty International and Niyamgiri Surakshya Samiti because of the company's operations in Niyamgiri Hills in Orissa, India that are said to threaten the lives of the Dongria Kondh people who populate this region. The Niyamgiri hills are also claimed to be an important wildlife habitat in Eastern Ghats of India as per a report by the Wildlife Institute of India as well as independent reports/studies carried out by civil society groups. In January 2009, thousands of locals formed a human chain around the hill in protest at the plans to start bauxite mining in the area. The Union Environment Ministry in August 2010 rejected earlier clearances granted to a joint venture led by the Vedanta Group company Sterlite Industries for mining bauxite from Niyamgiri hills.

Although community groups tried to stop the demolition with activism and court action, by 1977, the tenants were ordered to be evicted; protesters formed a human chain to stop the demolition, but police removed them and the building was razed. During the 1970s, as San Francisco became a popular and economically successful city, job seekers came seeking homes; Justin Herman, the Executive Director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency criticized the presence of SROs, saying "This land is too valuable to permit poor people to park on it". By 1980, the hotel and convention industries were lobbying for the building of new hotels for tourists; tenant activists protested what they viewed as the "Manhattanization" of the city, including the gentrification and impacts on traffic and air cleanliness. From 1975 to 2000, landlords eliminated about 6,085 SRO units. From 1989 to 2002, more than 1,700 SRO units were destroyed by fires. Even in the 2000s, immigrants live three or four tenants per SRO room. San Francisco is an example of a city that took over particularly squalid SROs, and renovated them for the disadvantaged.

"We Are the World" gained further promotion and coverage on May 25, 1986, when it was played during a major benefit event held throughout the US. Hands Across America—USA for Africa's follow-up project—was an event in which millions of people formed a human chain across the US. The event was held to draw attention to hunger and homelessness in the United States. "We Are the World"'s co-writer, Michael Jackson, had wanted his song to be the official theme for the event. The other board members of USA for Africa outvoted him, and it was instead decided that a new song would be created and released for the event, titled "Hands Across America". When released, the new song did not achieve the level of success that "We Are the World" did, and the decision to use it as the official theme for the event led to Jackson—who co-owned the publishing rights to "We Are the World"—resigning from the board of directors of USA for Africa.
