This effect is possible due to creation of an air bubble screen preventing the fish from getting trapped in water intake devices of Sredneuralskaya GRES. This is the third fish protection device at Sredneuralskaya GRES. In 2011 a polycontact pulse fish protection system was commissioned in the Isetkoye water reservoir water area near the water intake of the onshore pumping station of the CCGT unit. Thus, currently all water intake areas at Sredneuralskaya GRES are equipped with fish protection devices.

Late in 2016 a fish protection device was commissioned at Reftinskaya GRES. The fish protection device mode of operation is based on creation of a water-and-air screen in front of deep water intakes of the power plant. When a water-and-air mix is created, acoustic oscillations with a wide frequency range are generated thus ensuring intensive acoustic effect – a signal of biological danger for fish fry. Physical protection is used as well: fish fry is moved into areas where no water is taken to the plant.

On 24 August 2017 a special committee accepted a new fish protection device into operation at the Isetkoye water reservoir; the device will protect fish fry from getting into the water intake area. The system was installed at onshore pumping station No.1 of Sredneuralskaya GRES (PJSC Enel Russia). Therefore, all water intakes at Sredneuralskaya GRES are equipped with the system protecting fish fry from being trapped and killed, thus ensuring reduction in the impact of the power plant cycle on the ichthyofauna of the water reservoir. The air-lift fish protection device will prevent at least 70 percent of fish fry (measuring 12mm and more) from getting into the power plant cycle.

One of the major projects, implemented by PJSC Enel Russia in 2015, was commissioning of a modern fish protection system at Konakovskaya GRES. Every day the power plant takes in water to cool down the exhaust steam. One powerful pump runs 5 cubic meters per second. Air-bubble stream throws back fish into the safe zone.

Fish protection devices save at least 70% of fish fry measuring 12mm and over. In the early 1960s local farmers used a dragline to remove sediment from Butano Creek channel below Pescadero Bridge for several thousand feet down stream. The sediment removed was used to build a 6,000 foot levee on the west side of Butano Creek. Other levees were built to keep salt water out of agricultural fields. Juveniles of the painted greenling, a species of fish, have a facultative association with Urticina eques. They are often found among the tentacles or close to the column, especially when resting and inactive at night. According to researcher Joel Elliot, these associations occurred mainly in moderately exposed locations where the sea anemones and fish were both numerous; the large anemone offers the fish protection from predators and provides a safe environment for it to feed on copepods and other small invertebrates that are also associated with the anemone. The research indicated that the fish seemed to be unharmed by the anemone's nematocysts.

Temperature checks are maintained on the water returned to the river to comply with the UK Environment Agency's fish protection regulations. The engineers developed a strategy which uses the River Severn as a heat sink. Water is pumped from the river to The Hive, passed through a heat exchanger and then returned to the river at only a few degrees warmer. The "Assured Operating Plans" that determine the Canadian Entitlement amounts and establish a base operation for Canadian Treaty storage, include little direct treatment of other interests that have grown in importance over the years, such as fish protection, irrigation and other environmental concerns. However, the Treaty permits the Entities to incorporate a broad range of interests into the "Detailed Operating Plans" that are agreed to immediately prior to the operating year, and which modify the "Assured Operating Plans" to produce results more advantageous to both countries. For more than 20 years, the "Detailed Operating Plans" have included a growing number of fish-friendly operations designed to address environmental concerns on both sides of the border.
