The serpent assures the woman that God will not let her die if she ate the fruit, and, furthermore, that if she ate the fruit, her "eyes would be opened" and she would "be like God, knowing good and evil" (). The woman sees that the fruit of the tree of knowledge is a delight to the eye and that it would be desirable to acquire wisdom by eating the fruit. The woman eats the fruit and gives some to the man (). With this the man and woman recognize their own nakedness, and they make loincloths of fig leaves ().

Even before Eve's creation, God had warned Adam "...but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die". () Despite God's warning, first Eve, then Adam, eat the forbidden fruit after being persuaded by the devil in the form of a serpent. () After doing so, they realize that they are naked, and sew fig leaves together as coverings in a futile attempt to hide their loss of innocence. Shortly thereafter, Adam and Eve hear God walking in the garden, which results with them fearfully hiding among the trees.

In August 2005, London Zoo displayed four human volunteers wearing fig leaves (and bathing suits) for four days.London Zoo official website ;;; In 2007, Adelaide Zoo ran a Human Zoo exhibition which consisted of a group of people who, as part of a study exercise, had applied to be housed in the former ape enclosure by day, but then returned home by night. The inhabitants took part in several exercises, and spectators were asked for donations towards a new ape enclosure. Also in 2007, pygmy performers at the Festival of Pan-African Music (Fespam) were housed at a zoo in Brazzaville, Congo.

The musical opened on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre on January 2, 1969 and closed on January 6 after four performances and 17 previews. Loudon won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

She spent a year at Carnegie Tech (now part of Carnegie-Mellon University) in Pittsburgh and a summer playing in stock theater, and then came to New York to study with Lee Strasberg and Sanford Meisner. In 1964 she appeared on Broadway in the dramatic play Dylan at the Plymouth Theatre opposite Sir Alec Guinness, and in 1969 appeared in the musical The Fig Leaves Are Falling at the Broadhurst Theatre with Dorothy Loudon. Her other Broadway credits include Promises, Promises, The Iceman Cometh, and The Odd Couple. In 1970, O'Hara succeeded her younger sister, Jill (who had been nominated for a Tony Award) in the musical Promises, Promises.

Like Modigliani's first one-man show in Paris, it had reached the classic impasse, the clash of a conservative authority with an independent and free thinking artist. In a sarcastic and historically loaded gesture, he collected an armful of fresh fig leaves from the suburbs and pinned a leaf over the genitalia of each of the figures. Others, considered even more offensive, were veiled with black curtains. With this new, somewhat comic amendment, the show reopened and as one would expect, the scandal generated a huge amount of attention by creating one of the first real censorship issues for a Greek artist in the Post war period.

New political developments did not bode well for Lays. Charles X, who had come to the throne in 1824, named the ultra-royalist as Director General of the Fine Arts. La Rochefoucauld had an aversion to Lays both as an inveterate supporter of the Revolution, and, in particular, for the ironic remarks the singer had made about his morality campaign, which included lengthening ballerinas' skirts and providing ancient statues with fig leaves. In 1826, La Rochefoucauld had the opportunity to demonstrate his dislike when Lays, realising that life in Paris was beyond his financial means, decided to leave his post as professor and retire to the provinces to be near his married eldest daughter.

Rabbi Jeremiah ben Eleazar thus concluded that in the 130 years after Adam’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Adam begot ghosts and demons. But the Gemara raised an objection from a Baraita: Rabbi Meir taught that Adam was a great saint. According to Rabbi Meir, when Adam saw that through him death was ordained as a punishment, he spent 130 years fasting, severed connection with his wife, and wore clothes of fig leaves.

Swedler's large scale work Personalasweiss was commissioned by The Jewish Museum Berlin for the exhibition Haut Ab. The installation featured three life-sized images of the artist laid bare with geo-political fig leaves - a reference to the ritual of circumcision in the three monotheistic religions. His extensive video project Dirty Movies is a collection of one hundred music videos, inspired by invincibility of youth in the face of vulnerability in aging. The videos have been exhibited in international venues and have been collected by private art enthusiasts. Swedler has served as the Director of Communications and External Affairs at the interdisciplinary design studio of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, where he worked on projects including the renovation and expansion of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and The Shed in New York.

The museum received many valuable donations of ancient costumes since its foundation. In the past, the pieces were presented on wood mannequins with accessories as umbrellas, hats, blankets or fans. As light and the dust accumulated on the costumes caused considerable deterioration over time, it was agreed to withdraw the permanent collection, publishing catalogues and planning temporary exhibitions to show some pieces to the public. Included in the fabrics collection there are a series of twelve decorative Coptic textiles fragments, highlighting a tabulae with fig leaves decoration, dated between 140-380 AD; a fabric with polychrome bands dated between 210-390 AD; a fragment with dark background and two- colored decoration (probably taken from geometric mosaics) dated between 250-420 AD; and other fragment divided in three ornamental strips with putti and ducks on the central part and riders contained by side scrolls in laterals.
