The main species of grass is upright brome (Bromus erectus), though tor-grass (Brachypodium pinnatum) is also common. Upon its establishment in November 1901 this regiment wore a khaki serge uniform with narrow scarlet stripes on the turn-down collar, cuffs and khaki cord breeches. The headdress was a wide-brimmed hat of khaki felt with a scarlet plume and lancer style lines. Unusually three badges were worn on the hat - two regimental badges in different sizes plus one squadron badge (elephant, beaver, kangaroo, ostrich or fern-leaf according to the parts of the Empire from which the London-based colonials originated). Paeonia tenuifolia is a herbaceous species of peony that is called пион тонколистный (pion tonkolistnyy) in Russian, and nazikyarpaq pion in Azeri, both meaning "thin-leaved peony". In Ukraine it is known as півонія вузьколиста (pivoniya vuzʹkolysta), which means "narrow-leaved peony", or степова півонія (stepova pivoniya) "steppe peony", while the Bulgarian/Serbian vernacular names теснолист божур (теснолистен божур)/усколисни божур (tesnolist bozhur (tesnolisten bozhur)/uskolisni božur), тънкостен божур (тънкостенен божур)/танколисни божур (tankosten bozhur (tankostenen bozhur)/tankolisni božur) and степен божур/степски божур (stepen bozhur/stepski božur), have the same meanings. In English it is sometimes called the fern leaf peony. It is native to the Caucasus Mountains of Russia and the Black Sea coast of Ukraine, spreading westward into Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia and eastward to northwestern Kazakhstan.

In 1907 New Zealand's status was officially transformed from self-governing colony to Dominion. To mark the transition to independence, the New Zealand Government recommended that the garland of laurels on the Governor's flag should be replaced by one of fern leaves; the fern leaf was already recognised as one of New Zealand's national symbols. In a letter of 5 January 1908 the Governor requested that the garland around the badge on his flag be changed from the usual green laurel leaves to a garland of fern leaves, and referred to the garland of maple leaves surrounding the badge on the Flag of the Governor General of Canada as a precedent. This was approved without hesitation, since the regulations only stipulated that the device on the flags of Governors should be surrounded by a "green garland"—the type of leaves was not specified.
