On June 5, 2011 Jefferson Starship (Kantner, Freiberg, Richardson and Smith) performed with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Cleveland, OH. The show was broadcast live on HDNet for the HDNet Concert Series. In 2012, longtime guitarist Slick Aguilar departed the band due to falling ill with Hepatitis C, and was replaced by Jude Gold. However, the bomb explodes when activated, killing Chandra, the European having lied that there was a ten-minute countdown. Among the charities to respond to the disaster is First Aid, a British charity known for its unfailing generosity and being there as soon as possible. Six months later, Alex Rider is on vacation with Sabina Pleasure and her family in Scotland, and they go to the New Year's Eve party in Kilmore Castle; however, Sabina's mother, Liz Pleasure, is unable to go, after falling ill with influenza.

After the Skagit County chorale resulted in 75% of the choir members falling ill with coronavirus disease, Marr told the Los Angeles Times that the event should be a "wake up call" to members of the public who thought social distancing was over the top. The 10th-century Grade I listed church of St Margaret at High Halstow was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and was built on the highest point of the Hoo Peninsula, overlooking the rivers of the Thames and Medway. In the 18th century poverty and malnutrition were widespread across the peninsula, with High Halstow no exception; adult life expectancy was then about 30 years, lessened by ague, or marsh fever, the names for malaria, which proliferated in the North Kent Marshes and waterlogged farmland, a stronghold of the mosquito. The cause of malaria was discovered in 1890, and within five years the number of people falling ill with the disease decreased sharply as farmland and marshes were drained.
