Tsui was born into a humble Chinese family with two illiterate parents in Fanzhuang (), Henan, China, on February 28th, 1939. Born in the midst of the Japanese invasion of China during the Second World War, Tsui described his early childhood memories as being "filled with the years of drought, flood and war which were constantly on the consciousness of the inhabitants of my over-populated village." In 1572, Abdullah Khan Uzbeg captured Balkh and sent embassy to the court of Akbar, seeking the coalition of Sunni powers against the Persia. But, Akbar admonished him and in his reply let him know that, mere sectarian strife was not a justifiable reason for conquest. Meanwhile, though Uzbegs had captured Balkh, which along with Badakhshan was ruled till 1585 by Timurids, he had no desire to be embroiled into a conflict with them until they threatened Mughal position in Kabul and Qandhar. Rouse's expedition was not the only one facing difficulties that summer on K2. From September 1965 to August 1970, Bénard was in charge of running Ministry of Education psychological examinations, interviews and tests for children facing difficulties of adaptation, and counseling teachers on the way to solve the difficulties.

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Mohamed immigrated with his parents to Canada as refugees when he was five years old. They lived in Cambridge, Ontario for twelve years, until Mohamed started becoming a troubled teenager facing difficulties with the law, and his father Mohamed Hagi-Mohamud decided to move the family to Toronto for a "fresh start". Mohamed was enrolled at Humber College, but dropped out halfway through his first year, and took a job as a baggage handler at Pearson Airport, before finding new work at the Rogers Centre selling ice cream at Toronto Blue Jays games. After a few months however, he found easier work with his friend Ali Dirie, as the pair would travel to New York City and purchase discount designer jeans in seedy neighbourhoods, which they would re-sell to merchants in upscale Toronto neighbourhoods for profit, earning up to $1,000 per trip.
