The exorcising of demons is sometimes also referred to as deliverance ministries because a person or object is "delivered" or saved from an evil spiritual force. Spiritual mapping, a subset of practices under the broad umbrella of spiritual warfare, is the process by which defiled land, houses, and churches are discovered through careful observation of the history of the region and are subsequently illustrated on a map. A relatively well-known example of this type of spiritual mapping occurred in Amarillo, Texas by the group Repent Amarillo.

While commonly held as late as the 1980s, it has now become very rare due to the introduction of modern psychiatry. In Korean shamanism, a disease—whether physical or mental—is often thought to be caused by the entry of a malevolent spirit into the body. The Durin-gut seeks to cure the mental illness by exorcising this spirit, which is often identified as a yeonggam, a type of dokkaebi or goblin-like being with a penchant for attaching to human women that he lusts for.

The Devil's Labyrinth follows the character of Ryan McIntyre as he is enrolled at St. Isaac’s Catholic boarding school due to Ryan's reaction to his father's untimely death and his mother's reaction to a severe beating by students at his old school. St. Isaac's is no stranger to death and controversy, as Ryan soon discovers that there have been multiple incidents of disturbing behaviors, including a violent death and a missing student. He also referred to the process as a "creative catharsis" saying that they felt they were under attack and they were "exorcising our demons, and we brought it into Geffen". Production began August–September 1992 at Granny's House Recording Studio in Reno, NV. Demos were tracked previously at Cherokee Studios in LA, CA. The album was recorded and co-produced by David Holmann who had recorded Olivia Newton John, Little River Band, Bush and No Doubt.

Crowley initially plans to use Lucifer as his 'attack dog', having warded Lucifer's body so that he is trapped by his very vessel, but Lucifer feigns compliance so that he can win support from other demons to break the warding and free himself.

Jack surmises that if they were released from the film, they could be captured by it as well using a home movie camera. The team rushes back to the theatre as the Ghostmaker is releasing the others from the film and is able to use a camera to confine all the Night Travellers save for the Ghostmaker; Jack then rips open the camera and exposes the film to sunlight, effectively exorcising the ghosts.

After training with Ruby, Sam develops new abilities, such as exorcising demons with his mind, and his telekinesis becomes more potent. By drinking demon blood Sam's power become stronger, to the point where he can outright kill demons and even torture them while in their human hosts; by drinking at least three gallons of demon blood, he can kill demons just by concentrating and willing it to happen. After being affected by the Horseman Famine, Sam uses his powers to defeat him by attacking the demon spirits that Famine had recently consumed, although Dean and Bobby were subsequently forced to lock Sam in the panic room to detox.

Despite often sporting a tired nonchalant look, Mikage is faithful and caring towards Toma and Fusa in his own way while taking an aloof and indifferent approach to just about anyone or anything outside of slaying Horrors. But he is shown to have faith in humanity as he believes no human is destined to become a Horror, no matter how evil they might be. Following his mission of slaying the Horror Cadena, his right hand is bitten by the Horror with a slow healing wound noted by Toma to look like a wolf's fang, Mikage inexplicably gains the unprecedented ability of seemingly exorcising Horrors from their human hosts at the cost being unable to seal a Horror's essence in his blade. Soon after, Mikage develops a strange feeling of being watched as a strange butterfly remained by his side during one unusual night when a large group of Horrors appear in multiple places.

The sixth season episode "Weekend At Bobby's" is centered on Bobby; Sam and Dean are largely relegated to a side-plot while the episode focuses on Bobby's constant working to cover other hunters while also trying to reclaim his soul from Crowley. After a year's research into Crowley's human life—including summoning the ghost of Crowley's mortal son for intel—Bobby locates Crowley's physical remains. Bobby is the first human to reverse a demon-deal by threatening to destroy Crowley's remains which would 'kill' Crowley in the same manner as exorcising a ghost; he also presses his advantage to force Crowley into leaving him the use of his legs and the removal of any loopholes from the original contract. Sam, concerned by reports that the psychological damage his soul will have sustained while being tortured by Lucifer will destroy him if it is restored to his body, attempts to kill Bobby in "Appointment in Samarra" as part of a ritual to prevent his soul returning to him, but Bobby easily forgives Sam after his soul is restored, recognizing that Sam was not responsible; though, he is awkward around him at first due to his actions.
