Story of the Eye consists of several vignettes, centered around the sexual passion existing between the unnamed late adolescent male narrator and Simone, his primary female partner. Within this episodic narrative two secondary figures emerge: Marcelle, a mentally ill sixteen-year-old girl who comes to a sad end, and Lord Edmund, a voyeuristic English émigré aristocrat. Simone and the narrator first consummate their lust on a beach near their home, and involve Marcelle within their activity. The couple are exhibitionists, copulating within Simone's house in full view of her mother.

Finally, critics note her Surrealist sense of juxtaposition and spatial ambiguity, including a freewheeling approach to reality where abstract and figurative are often interchangeable, creating a context of danger, disorientation and flux. Bramson's early paintings often borrowed strategies from Japanese woodcut design, breaking compositions into rectilinear sections or diptychs, but in signature works like The Dance (1985) and Shipwrecked (1987), she began tackling larger-scale, panoramic compositions with deep landscape spaces. Within them, she would orchestrate a growing personal iconography, both familiar and bizarre: performer-exhibitionists, flamboyant costumes and accoutrements, theatrical objects (masks, globes, vases, swords, pillars) and exotic settings. Her dreamlike, emotionally charged vignettes implied archetypal, yet open-ended, relational scenarios, with contorted figures clinging to masts, bending over backwards, or paddling as waves swirled around sinking boats.

In October 2019, Nesrin Özören posted a number of tweets with homophobic and transphobic content, where she described LGBTIQ+ individuals as "exhibitionists who define their existence with their bedrooms" and as "people who do not like their chromosome sets and wage a war against biology." She also claimed that "people who are biologically gay are very few, but their impact is ten times more than their number" and "there are people who are gay or lesbian because it is fashionable." Özören also stated that she would not mind even if the entire United States or China is gay, but she would never want it to be fashionable in Turkey. Students who interpreted Özören's comments to be in conflict with Boğaziçi University's ethics principles concerning gender and sexuality, and potentially harmful to the University's reputation as a scientific institution reported the incident to the administration.
