The American Tobacco Trail is a rail trail project that is located in the Research Triangle Park region. Fifteen miles of the trail is located in Wake County and is open to pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians (in non-urban sections), and other non- motorized users.

Towpaths are popular with cyclists and walkers, and some are suitable for equestrians. In snowy winters they are popular in the US with cross-country skiers and snowmobile users. Although historically not designed or used as towpaths, acequia ditch banks also are popular recreational trails.

In men, sports-related injuries are among the major causes of testicular trauma. Banks is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States which is located in the Tualatin Valley. The community was named for John and Nancy Banks, who owned a nearby dairy farm.

Graeme Otto Hansen (20 March 1934 - 22 August 2007), also known as Hec Hansen, was a New Zealand equestrian. Hansen was born in Gisborne in 1934 and grew up in Hexton near Gisborne. His parents were Ruie and Eva Hansen, and he had three siblings. His father was riding in the cavalry in WWI and all four children developed into skilled equestrians.

The lightest of these bridges, without decking, are suitable for use only by pedestrians. In February 2005, on his 38th birthday, Accola announced that he would retire as alpine skier after nearly two decades in the sport. He is the sixth Swiss athlete to compete at five Olympics, after middle-distance runner Paul Martin, equestrians Henri Chammartin and Gustav Fischer, javelin thrower Urs von Wartburg and equestrian Christine Stückelberger. Mitchell was one of the Silver Riders, expert equestrians who appeared in parades throughout the American Southwest. In his later years, Mitchell managed several ranches he owned in Southern California. He died in 1988 at the age of 77 of a stroke caused by a fall from a ladder in La Jolla in San Diego County, where he had resided. Mitchell was married and had two sons.

The north-east ridge There are three main routes which ascend the mountain, all of which gain over of elevation. The standard route ascends the peak from the east, starting from the Colorado Trail just north of Twin Lakes. The long North (Main) Elbert Trail begins close to the Elbert Creek Campground, and gains about . The trail is open to equestrians, mountain bikers and hunters during season.

The scenic Perkiomen Trail runs through the Perkiomen Creek Valley from its junction with the Schuylkill River Trail at Oaks, Upper Providence Township, to Green Lane Park, the largest county park. Most of the trail is a -wide cinder or stone aggregate (unpaved) surface with grass shoulders. Selected sections are paved where deemed appropriate. The trail is popular with walkers, joggers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and equestrians.

Ever since Augustus' conquest of Egypt in the first century BC, the emperors of Rome had regarded their absolute control of this territory and its grain harvests as a sine qua non for the maintenance of their authority. Loss of control of Egypt would almost immediately undermine the Imperial government's ability to maintain control of the Roman people. The Emperor's absolute trust in the praefectus of Egypt was considered even more vital than that of the praefecti of the African provinces. Therefore, from the principate's earliest days, its praefectus had always been an equestrian, presumably because most equestrians lacked a personal power base comparable to a senator's, making equestrians more likely to remain loyal to the princeps.

The Cayuga Hojack Trail is one of two Hojack trails in New York, the other being the Webster Hojack Trail in Webster. Both are built on remnants of the Hojack, a common name for the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad. Cayuga County maintains the trail, which intersects the Cato–Fair Haven Trail south of Fair Haven. Both trails are used by snowmobiles in winter, equestrians, bicyclists, and hikers in the summer.

Smith Memorial Arch is an American Civil War monument at South Concourse and Lansdowne Drive in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Windmill near Duncormick Duncormick is visited by walkers, equestrians and cyclists, and there is fishing in both the nearby river and the ocean. Polo has been called "the sport of kings". It has become a spectator sport for equestrians and society, often supported by sponsorship. The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring goals by using a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team's goal. Each team has four mounted riders, and the game usually lasts one to two hours, divided into periods called chukkas (or "chukkers").

This helps to educate riders in road safety and to minimise the risks involved when riding on the road. The Society runs a website dedicated to safety advice and reporting safety incidents, www.horseaccidents.org.uk. The data collected is used to lobby for better conditions for equestrians. In the site's first two years, the BHS saw a 250% increase in road accidents reported to them, and incidents involving dog attacks helped influence changes to the Dangerous Dogs Bill.

The Nashua River Rail Trail is a paved mixed-use rail trail in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire under control of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). It roughly follows the course of the Nashua River, passing through the towns of Ayer, Groton, Pepperell, and Dunstable, Massachusetts and ends about a mile across the New Hampshire state border in Nashua, New Hampshire. The trail is used by walkers, cyclists, inline skaters, equestrians, and cross-country skiers.

The bridge was intended to serve all land-based international traffic, including pedestrian, animal-drawn, automobile and rail. A network of short trails (the Donlon Loop Trail) leads to a housing development along Dublin Boulevard. Hikers are not allowed to park in this housing development. From the mid-fifteenth century until 1882, spring carnival in Rome closed with a horse race. Fifteen to 20 riderless horses, originally imported from the Barbary Coast of North Africa, were set loose to run the length of the Via del Corso, a long, straight city street; their time was about minutes. To train young equestrians in halter showing techniques, horse showmanship classes (also called Showmanship in hand or youth showmanship), are offered. They are the halter equivalent of equitation, in that the handler, not the horse, is judged on his or her abilities. Classes may be broken down by the age of horse or rider, by the number of first place ribbons earned by horse or rider, and by size or breed of horse (or pony). In addition, there is a near-infinite range of regional or specialty classes that may be offered.

Camp Lake is a small tarn located in the Emigrant Wilderness in Tuolumne County, California, approximately north of Yosemite National Park. It is accessible only to hikers and equestrians via the popular Deer Lake Trail. The Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT) is a rail trail in Massachusetts. The trail passes through the towns of Douglas, Uxbridge, Millville, Blackstone, Bellingham, and Franklin, and is one of the longest trails in southern Massachusetts. It is designated for use by pedestrians, equestrians and non-motorized vehicles, with motorized off-road vehicles excluded. It occupies an abandoned railroad corridor running for approximately with an eastern terminus at Union Street in downtown Franklin, Massachusetts and a western terminus at the Connecticut state line in the Douglas State Forest, Douglas, Massachusetts.

Bruno Risi (born 6 September 1968 in Erstfeld) is a retired Swiss professional racing cyclist. He competed at five Olympic Games. Risi was one of the top six-day riders of his generation, he won many professional Madison events during his long career. He is the ninth Swiss sportsperson to compete at five Olympics (1988, 1996/2008), after middle-distance runner Paul Martin, equestrians Henri Chammartin and Gustav Fischer, javelin thrower Urs von Wartburg, equestrian Christine Stückelberger, and Alpine skier Paul Accola, shooter Gabriele Bühlmann, and equestrian Markus Fuchs.

Freeways are usually limited to motor vehicles of a minimum power or weight; signs may prohibit bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians and impose a minimum speed. The Pine Ridge Trail (USFS 3E06) (western portion closed ) is the most popular hiking trail in the Ventana Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest, California. The trail traverses the Ventana Wilderness from the Big Sur Station near sea level to China Camp on Tassajara Road at . Built in 1916 by the Post family of Big Sur, the Pine Ridge Trail offers hikers and equestrians an array of backcountry camps to enjoy. It transits a broad variety of ecosystems, including mixed hardwood forested ridges, dense chaparral, riparian woods, and redwood forests.

In the late 19th century, the very rich of New York began building mansions along the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 59th Street and 96th Street, looking onto Central Park. By the early 20th century, this portion of Fifth Avenue had been nicknamed "Millionaire's Row", with mansions such as the Mrs. William B. Astor House and William A. Clark House. Sydney, a third generation horsewomen, is the daughter of Jill Shulman, a trainer in Greenwich, Connecticut. He is, jointly with shooter Gabriele Bühlmann, the seventh Swiss sportsperson to compete at five Olympics, after middle-distance runner Paul Martin, equestrians Henri Chammartin and Gustav Fischer, javelin thrower Urs von Wartburg, equestrian Christine Stückelberger, and Alpine skier Paul Accola. At the European Show Jumping Championships, he came second in the individual event in 1999 on Tinka's Boy.

Paremoremo Scenic Reserve is a block of land north of the Paremoremo residential area. It is the largest bush reserve in the North Shore and is a site of ecological significance. A block of land south of the prison was bought by North Shore City for NZ$3.1 million in February 2002, to be developed as Sanders Park. The park was finished in 2010, for a total budget of $2.7 million, including a $1.2 million toilet block, a fenced offleash dog walking area, mountain bike trails, a small children's bike track, and a fenced paddock for equestrians.

The Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) is a planned 130+-mile multi-use trail (currently over 70 miles are open) along the route, following alongside U.S. Highway 82 and Texas State Highway 34. When complete, the trail will connect 19 cities spread over seven counties, stretching from the edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to the Texarkana metropolitan area along the Arkansas border. When completed the Northeast Texas Trail will be the longest hike/bike and equestrian trail in Texas and the fourth-longest in the United States. The trail is being designed to provide access for hikers, mountain bicyclists, and equestrians.

A view of Bennett Valley from North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park The North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve encompasses of Sonoma Mountain abutting Jack London State Historic Park. The land was purchased for public use between 2003 and 2015 by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District in cooperation with the Coastal Conservancy and Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. The horse which Castleman rides on the statue was based on his beloved mare, Carolina. His most familiar appearance in Louisville, either at the head of the Louisville Legion or pursuant of his labors as president of the Board of Park Commissioners, was on the back of a five-gaited horse. This monument and the John Hunt Morgan Memorial in Lexington, Kentucky are the only Civil War monuments in Kentucky with equestrians. High Bridge Trail State Park is a rail trail in Southside Virginia converted from a rail line last belonging to Norfolk Southern. The first section of the High Bridge Trail opened in 2008 and the final section was completed in 2012. With a length of more than thirty miles, the trail is shared by bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians -- and includes a restored crossing at the Appomattox River over the historic High Bridge - from which the park derives its name. The lineal park traverses Appomattox, Nottoway, Cumberland, and Prince Edward counties as well as Pamplin City, Prospect, Farmville, Rice and Burkeville.

One of the many trails at Los Trancos Openspace Preserve Los Trancos Open Space Preserve is a 274-acre (1.11 km²) open space preserve, located in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, California, near Los Altos Hills, California. The preserve contains about 5 miles (8 km) of hiking trails, of which 2.1 miles (3.4 km) are open to equestrians, and none are open to bicycles. Moved fence because of 1906 earthquake The area was once a part of a 13,300 acre (53.8 km²) rancho. Once the stream enters the city of Philadelphia, the creek valley and its deeply wooded gorge form part of the Fairmount Park system in Philadelphia, a jewel of a park and of nature set in the middle of an urban landscape. The aqueduct was then rerouted to flow beneath the highway. In November 1998, long after the aqueduct was shut down, the bridge was replaced as a crossing for aqueduct walkers, bikers, and equestrians over the particularly dangerous section of the highway. Stevenson's home in Mettawa, IL The Lake County Forest Preserve District maintains five forest preserves within village boundaries, including Old School, Grainger Woods, McArthur Woods, Captain Daniel Wright Woods and Adlai Stevenson Historic Home. The overall intent of the Master Plan of Trails and Bikeways is to guide the planning and design of pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian facilities in a comprehensive manner throughout Lancaster. Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve Renowned throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for its spectacular display of spring wildflowers, Edgewood Park occupies of grasslands, chaparral, and wooded foothills between Highway 280 and the homes of Emerald Hills. Known for its biotic diversity, this small wilderness was declared a permanent natural preserve in 1993 with support from the EHHA, thus protecting it from any future development. The park has four entrances: Old Stage Coach Road off Edgewood Road, the Sunset Trailhead off Hillcrest Way, Clarkia Way off Cañada Road, and the Sylvan Way Access. A well-maintained system of trails is open for hikers, joggers, and equestrians.

Located in the North Reach of Laughlin is the Colorado River Greenway Heritage Trail park. It include nine miles of trails for bicyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians; restrooms; picnic sites; shade shelters; fishing piers; an extensive playground with water sprays in the summer; and a pedestrian bridge over State Highway 163 which provides access to the Colorado River. In the center of Upper Laughlin, next to the Spirit Mountain Activity Center, and one block from the town library, is Mountain View Park. It includes two softball fields, a playground, exercise trail, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball court, shaded picnic tables, a dog run, and a skateboard park.

Eventually, following his return to Maidstone in October 1852 (and promotion to commander of the regiment's troop there), he published his first book, The Training of Cavalry Remount Horses: A New System, through Parker, Furnivall & Parker. Dedicated to Berkeley, the book was highly specialised and intended for practical use, aimed specifically at cavalry officers rather than equestrians generally. The reaction to the book was limited, partly because of its specialised nature. His second book, Cavalry: Its History and Tactics, covered cavalry theory more widely and made a series of recommendations, including the use of carbines on foot rather than from the saddle, and substantial improvements to the cavalry saddle itself.

The indoor medal was the bronze conquered by Brazil women's national volleyball team, repeating the same result of the 1996 Summer Olympics, in a match of 3 sets to 0 against United States. The bronze medal obtained by equestrians Luiz Felipe de Azevedo, André Johannpeter, Alvaro Miranda Neto and Rodrigo Pessoa in team jumping was the same result of the 1996 Olympics and with the same team. The swimmers Fernando Scherer, Gustavo Borges, Carlos Jayme and Edvaldo Valério conquered the bronze medal in Gustavo Borges obtained the silver medal in men's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay. It was Gustavo Borges' fourth Olympic medal, a record number among Brazilian swimmers.

The result of GARI's actions was a larger turnout of Narragansett residents, not just a small group of abutters, who came out to tell town officials they wanted the bike path. Although the process has been lengthy, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation is finalizing construction of the path and opening it to the public in Summer 2011. GARI over the years has expanded its focus beyond the bike paths that make up segments of the East Coast Greenway in Rhode Island, and advocated for all paths and trails. The group's constituency has expanded to include hikers, walkers, equestrians, mountain bikers and even canoe and kayak users.

These crossings included raised buttons for horse riders, safety fences and lights to control the traffic which consisted of only two orange lights.

Karen Lende O'Connor (born February 17, 1958) is an American equestrian who competes in three-day eventing. Although she did not come from a family of equestrians, her interest in horses started at an early age, and she received her first horse for her 11th birthday. O'Connor began competing internationally in the late 1970s, and in 1986 began riding for the US national eventing team. Since then, she had ridden in five Olympic Games, three World Equestrian Games and two Pan-American Games, winning multiple medals, including a team silver at the 1996 Olympic Games and a team bronze at the 2000 Olympic Games.

Gaius Calpurnius Piso, a leading Roman statesman, benefactor of literature, and orator, intended to have Nero assassinated, and replace him as Emperor through acclamation by the Praetorian Guard. He enlisted the aid of several prominent senators, equestrians, and soldiers with a loosely conceived plan in which Faenius Rufus—joint prefect of the Praetorian Guard with Ofonius Tigellinus—would conduct Piso to the Praetorian Camp, where the Guard would acclaim him as emperor. Maximinus I (Thrax) (ruled 235–8), whose career epitomises the soldier- equestrians who took over command of the army during the 3rd century. A Thracian shepherd who had led a group of peasant vigilantes against rural robbers in his home region, he joined the army as a cavalryman in 197 under Septimius Severus and was probably granted an equus publicus by Caracalla towards the end of his rule (218). Under Alexander Severus he was given command of a legion and later served as provincial governor (praeses pro legato) in Mauretania Tingitana and in Germania before seizing supreme power in a coup d'état in 235.

Peters Canyon is commonly used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians because of its lengthy trails, which include Newport Boulevard Trail, Meadowlark Trail, Skypark Trail, Lake View Loop Trail, Lower Peters Canyon Trail, Peters Canyon Creek Trail, Gnatcatcher Trail, Sage Trail, Opossum Trail, and East View Ridge Trail. The longest trail is approximately 5.5 miles long, roundtrip. The Mountains to Sea Trail, a 22-mile-long trail that stretches from Weir Canyon to Upper Newport Bay, passes through Peters Canyon as well, connecting it to other wild parks in the local area. The trails are well maintained by rangers and local citizens who volunteer their time to the park.

After opposition from environmentalists and Orange County Supervisor Tom Wilson, the plans were drastically scaled down. The paved Aliso Creek Riding and Hiking Trail, constructed in sections starting in the 1970s, extends along the creek from Aliso Canyon to the Cleveland National Forest. The approximately trail is used by hikers, bicyclists and equestrians, and connects most of the major city and county parks along the creek including Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and Laguna Niguel Regional Park, Aliso Viejo, Creekside, Sheep Hills, Sycamore, El Toro, and Heroes Parks, and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. In May 2012, it was named a National Recreation Trail.

Beyond stripping the tribunate of its powers, the last provision was intended to prevent ambitious youth from seeking the office by making it a dead end. Sulla also permanently enlarged the senate by promoting a large number of equestrians from the Italian countryside as well as automatically inducting the now-20 quaestors elected each year into the senate. Meanwhile, a composite squad of three dressage riders was formed and thereby added to the French roster by receiving a spare berth freed up by one of two nations (South Africa and Brazil), unable to fulfill the NOC Certificate of Capability, based on their individual results in the FEI Olympic rankings at the end of 2019 season.

The privately held company is run by Alain who has presided over the acquisition of several non-Chanel brands, including Eres Lingerie and beachwear, Tanner Krolle saddles and leather goods, and Holland & Holland, a British gunmaker. Based in France, the Wertheimer brothers own French vineyards including Château Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux, and Château Canon in Saint-Émilion, both of which have won rave reviews from oenophiles. Both brothers are enthusiastic equestrians who also inherited and operate an important Thoroughbred horse racing stable they call La Presle Farm or Wertheimer farm for racing in the United States and is known as Wertheimer et Frère partnership in France.

A 1909 Ohio State publication described the new north side park as a place of beauty where large oak and elm trees shaded a wading pond, five small lakes connected by a single stream, rustic benches, foot bridges and springs lined with cobblestones. Glen Echo's picturesque environs hosted picnic dinners, equestrians and motorists who enjoyed this oasis of greenery. Most of the homes in the Glen Echo neighborhood were built between 1909 and 1943 and include Craftsman-style bungalows, Shingle Style, Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival, many with front and/or sleeping porches. Most homes, however, are not "high-style" structures and would be classified as either traditional American Four-Square or American vernacular in style.

In the U.K., the official daughter club of MASCUSA is known as UKMASC. UKMASC was founded in 2011 and, although the breed is not yet recognised by the U.K. Kennel Club, UKMASC is dedicated to sound and responsible breeding practices and the promotion of the breed in the U.K. The breed has been used for herding smaller stock such as sheep and goats, although they have the heart to tackle larger livestock as well. Their small size was looked upon with favor, as they could more easily double as a household pet. They became especially popular with equestrians traveling to horse shows, as their intelligence, loyalty, and size made them an excellent travel companion.

Bridle ornament inscribed Plinio Praefecto ("Property of the prefect Pliny"), found at Castra Vetera legionary base (Xanten, Germany), believed to have belonged to the classical author Pliny the Elder when he was a praefectus alae (commander of an auxiliary cavalry regiment) in Germania Inferior. Pliny was a hereditary Roman knight of the imperial era who became celebrated for his writings on geography and natural history. He also had a distinguished career as a public servant, in a series of posts reserved for equestrians. He served as a military officer in 44–54, as equestrian governor (procurator Augusti) of two minor provinces in the period 70–77 and then as a secretary of state in Rome to the emperor Vespasian.

Thousands of riders have made the trek down Colorado Boulevard. Prior to the parade an "Equestfest" is held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center to showcase the performances by the talented riding teams.

Stoney Point, also known as the Stoney Point Outcroppings or Chatsworth Formation, is a Los Angeles City park near the north end of Topanga Canyon Boulevard (State Route 27) in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, California, part of the city of Los Angeles. Stoney Point is a popular destination for hikers, equestrians and also with rock climbers because of its large boulders, which afford many opportunities to practice the sport of bouldering. The top of the rock formation offers excellent views of Chatsworth, the Santa Susana Mountains, Coyote Pass, and the entire San Fernando Valley. Wildlife including coyotes, rattlesnakes, red tailed hawks, golden eagles, turkey vultures, rabbits, and skunks can all be found at Stoney Point.

Charles Ferdinand Pahud de Mortanges (13 May 1896 in 's-Gravenhage – 7 April 1971 in 's-Gravenhage) was a Dutch horse rider who competed at the 1924, 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics and was the flag bearer for the Netherlands in 1932. He is only one of three equestrians (Mark Todd and Michael Jung) to win two consecutive Olympic titles in the individual three-day event. Besides his riding achievements, de Mortanges was president or vice president of the National Olympic Committee (1946–1961) and a member of the International Olympic Committee (1946–1964). He was also a top commanding officer of the Royal Netherlands Motorized Infantry Brigade in 1944–1945 and later a senior army official overseeing the official ceremonies involving the Dutch Royal Family.

The highest point is unspectacular as it is very flat and wooded; it can be reached by foot, by bike or even by jeep. Despite being overgrown with large forests and fields, many villages are situated on the hill's slopes and at its base, some of the bigger are Muri AG, Sins, Hochdorf and Hitzkirch. The hill is a frequently used place for bikers, hikers, equestrians and families, as several restaurants exist on various places of the hill. Despite his low altitude for Swiss standards, at some points the view is quite a sight as Lake Zug, Lake Hallwil and Lake Baldegg and prominent Swiss mountains as Säntis, Tödi, Titlis and Finsteraarhorn can be seen from some places, like Horben.

Khan Krum pursue the Byzantines at the Battle of Versinikia (813) The Bulgars (also Bulghars, Bulgari, Bolgars, Bolghars, Bolgari, Proto-Bulgarians) were Turkic semi-nomadic warrior tribes that flourished in the Pontic–Caspian steppe and the Volga region during the 7th century. They became known as nomadic equestrians in the Volga-Ural region, but some researchers say that their ethnic roots can be traced to Central Asia. During their westward migration across the Eurasian steppe, the Bulgar tribes absorbed other ethnic groups and cultural influences in a process of ethnogenesis, including Indo- European, Finno-Ugric and Hunnic tribes. Modern genetic research on Central Asian Turkic people and ethnic groups related to the Bulgars points to an affiliation with Western Eurasian populations.

This had a crossing keeper on duty 24 hours a day and the gates were interlocked with the railway signalling system. However, the route later ceased to be a through road between the two villages, so the railway company withdrew the crossing keeper and redesignated the crossing to be operated by its users. It was then made an occupation crossing and the only vehicles allowed to use it were those authorised to have access to Tackley Estate.

Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. Equestrian and Therapeutic Center is a nationally recognized 501(c) (3) nonprofit equine therapeutic organization founded by CEO Patricia E. Kelly, who is a veteran of the United States Marines and long-time community leader who initially started the organization as an equestrian club for Black-women equestrians. Patricia Kelly wanted to help improve the quality of life in her community, so Ebony Horsewomen soon became a full-service equine therapeutic center that houses horses and other small therapy animals as well as agriculture and is a 36-year institution in Hartford's historic, 693-acre Keney Park area in the Northend. Ebony Horsewomen Equestrian and Therapeutic Center is nationally recognized and has won numerous awards for helping empower youth.

The Garhajis were described as being nomads who had a reputation of being fine warriors and who were very skilled equestrians, and were noted to be among the best horsemen and in possession of the best breed of Horses among the Somali. The Duarte bicycle path is a Class 1 bike path in Duarte, California that parallels Royal Oaks Drive from Buena Vista Street to Royal Oaks Park (Vineyard Ave) for about . The trail is paralleled by a wide dirt area on the North side (often used by equestrians, joggers and dog walkers) suitable for mountain bikes. This bike trail was constructed by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy built on an old Pacific Electric Railway narrow gauge grade. From the end of the trail it is possible to continue on the San Gabriel River Bicycle path via Royal Oaks Drive (East) to Encanto Parkway (South) past Encanto Park and across the River on a bridge on the East side of Encanto Parkway (about 1.2 miles).

The United States has few if any formal designations for bridle paths, though horses are generally allowed on most state and federal trails, roads and public routes except where specifically restricted, although rules differ among locations. There is some criticism of trail riding when excess or improper use of trails may lead to erosion, the spread of invasive plants, conflict with hikers, or harassment of wildlife. Off-road or trail activity is usually not permitted, as such activity may also raise the risk of soil erosion, spread weeds, and cause other damage. However, many responsible equestrians, mountain bikers, and off-road motorcyclists, especially those who get involved in these sports by joining an organized club, perform hours of trail maintenance every year.

It seems that from the start the equestrians in the imperial service were organised on a hierarchical basis reflecting their pay-grades. According to Suetonius, writing in the early part of the second century AD, the equestrian procurators who "performed various administrative duties throughout the empire" were from the time of Emperor Claudius I organised into four pay-grades, the trecenarii the ducenarii, the centenarii, and the sexagenarii, receiving 300,000, 200,000, 100,000, and 60,000 sesterces per annum respectively.Suet:Claud(24) Cassius Dio, writing a century later, attributed the beginnings of this process to the first emperor, Augustus, himself.Cassius Dio(53:14) There is almost no literary or epigraphic evidence for the use of these ranks until towards the end of the 2nd century.

Control of access relates to a legal status which limits the types of vehicles that can use a highway, as well as a road design that limits the points at which they can access it. Freeways are usually limited to motor vehicles of a minimum power or weight; signs may prohibit cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians and impose a minimum speed. They continue to serve in remote areas and in metropolitan areas where their day-to-day function may be picturesque or ceremonial, but they are also employed in crowd control because of their mobile mass and height advantage and increasingly in the UK for crime prevention and high visibility policing roles. Mounted police may be employed for specialized duties ranging from patrol of parks and wilderness areas, where police cars would be impractical or noisy, to riot duty, where the horse serves to intimidate those whom it is desired to disperse through its larger size, or may be sent in to snatch trouble makers or offenders from the crowd.

Though the need to ride long distances has existed since the domestication of the horse, endurance riding as an organized activity was first developed in the United States based on European cavalry (particularly Polish and Russian WWI) and breeding program tests requiring the ability to carry over in one day. Organized endurance riding as a formal sport began in 1955, when Wendell Robie and a group of equestrians rode from the Lake Tahoe area across the Sierra Nevada Range to Auburn in under 24 hours. They followed the historic Western States Trail. This ride soon became known as the Tevis Cup, and it remains the most difficult of any 100-mile ride in the world because of the severe terrain, high altitude, and 100-degree (~37 °C) temperatures.
