Due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Seattle is in a major earthquake zone. On February 28, 2001, the magnitude 6.8 Nisqually earthquake did significant architectural damage, especially in the Pioneer Square area (built on reclaimed land, as are the Industrial District and part of the city center), but caused only one fatality. Compression conditions were experienced spreading to the west along the northern margin of Iberia. This caused narrowing of the Bay of Biscay, with subduction of the bay floor happening forming the Cantabrian Mountains, starting at the very end of Cretaceous and into early Eocene. The subduction ceased at 54 Ma. Stress from the northeast edge of Spain's collision with Eurasia affected the interior, raising the Iberian Basin to form the Iberian Chain mountain range, north east of the centre. The Azores–Gibraltar transform zone activated at about 30 Ma. This zone appears as a ridge on the Atlantic Ocean floor, and is apparent even today as an earthquake zone.

Five additional seismographs were placed in the earthquake zone, and scientists closely monitored the seismic activity. The Tang was also an era of noteworthy earthquakes, including a very severe one in the region in 734. The Tang poet Du Fu visited the site 25 years later, and wrote a poem entitled "Mountain Temples" that probably is a description of Maijishan. In cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs, USGS continued to monitor and record in detail the performance of veterans hospital buildings during earthquakes. Arguably, the additional defense provided by the seawalls presented an extra margin of time for citizens to evacuate and also stopped some of the full force of energy which would have caused the wave to climb higher in the backs of coastal valleys. In contrast, the seawalls also acted in a negative way to trap water and delay its retreat. The failure of the world's largest seawall, which cost $1.5 billion to construct, shows that building stronger sea walls to protect larger areas would have been even less cost-effective.

In a subsequent inquiry of the handling of the disaster, seven members of the Italian National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks were accused of giving "inexact, incomplete and contradictory" information about the danger of the tremors prior to the main quake. This paper also indicates that Chambourg-sur-Indre is located in a low risk earthquake zone: level 2 on a scale of 1–5.

During his career, Ronan has been awarded eight Emmy Awards, two Edward R. Murrow Awards, and two AZBEE Awards for journalism excellence. His national Emmy Award was as part of CNN's coverage of the Oklahoma City Bombing and one of his Murrow Awards was for his reporting on the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. He has traveled to the Iraq/Kuwait border with the U.S. Army, reported from an earthquake zone along the India-Pakistan border, the Oval Office, Camp David, Maryland and twice aboard a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft as it flew into the eye of two separate category five hurricanes, Ivan and Rita. Ronan served as the network pool producer for several high-profile speeches by Speaker of the House Thomas P. ‘Tip’ O’Neill and President Ronald Reagan.

Since she took over China Symphony Development Foundation in 2004 as President, she has overseen several major music campaigns on the national level including the concert commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Anti-Japanese War in 2005, Red Ribbon charity concert devoted to anti-HIV campaign in 2006, Mozart Piano and Violin Competition commemorating the 250th anniversary of Mozart held in eight cities nationwide in 2006, Youth Instrumentalist (Concerto) Competition, China Teens and Youth Symphony Orchestra Summer Camp in 2007, music tours in Germany, Austria and Czech Republic in both 2007 and 2010, relief concert devoted to the Sichuan earthquake zone for mothers and sons in 2008 where over 40 million RMB was raised for earthquake victims. She also founded the League of CSDF consisting of initially 44 orchestra members. She was elected Chairwoman of the Alliance of Asia-Pacific Region Orchestras (AAPRO) end of 2008 during its sixth Summit. In 2009 she presented Straits Peace Orchestra with a Taiwanese partner.

Destroyed buildings in Gaza City, January 2009 Along with a high casualty rate, there were multiple economic, industrial and medical effects of the Gaza War. The United Nations Development Programme warned that there will be long-term consequences of the attacks on Gaza because the livelihoods and assets of tens of thousands of Gaza civilians have been affected. Early estimates by independent contractors in Gaza say that Gaza lost nearly $2 billion in assets, including 4,000 homes destroyed."Gaza 'looks like earthquake zone'", BBC News, 19 January 2009. The IDF destroyed 600–700 factories, small industries, workshops and business enterprises throughout the Gaza Strip, 24 mosques, 31 security compounds, and 10 water or sewage lines. The World Health Organization said that 34 health facilities (8 hospitals and 26 primary health care clinics) were damaged over the course of the offensive and the UNOCHA said that over 50 United Nations facilities sustained damage, of which 28 reported damage in the first three days of the operation.
