The Dumdums (formerly stylised as Dum Dums) were a British guitar-pop band. London-based, they split up in August 2001. Kim Salmon at home in Perth, January 1989 In August 1983 while still a member of The Scientists, Salmon on guitar joined Beasts of Bourbon as a side project alongside old band mates Baker and Sudjovic; with Spencer P. Jones on guitar (of The Johnnys); and Tex Perkins on vocals (ex-Tex Deadly and the Dum-Dums). In October that year they recorded the group's debut album, The Axeman's Jazz (July 1984). In February 1984 Salmon and Perkins formed Salamander Jim with Richard Ploog on drums (also in The Church), however by the following month Salmon had returned to his commitments with The Scientists. During The Scientists 1987 tour of Australia Salmon formed Kim Salmon and the Surrealists in Perth as an indie pop group.

It was on this tour that the band began to build up their fanbase, selling a two-track CD known as "The Blue CD" that contained the tracks "Everything" and "Until My Ship Comes In". Dum Dums' debut single, "Everything", produced by Steve Power was released on 28 February 2000. Accompanied by a video and A-listing on British radio stations, including BBC Radio 1, it reached 21 in the UK Singles Chart. The second single, "Can't Get You Out of My Thoughts" was released on 26 June 2000 and reached number 18 in the UK chart. British soldiers lie dead on the battlefield after the Battle of Spion Kop, 24 Jan 1900 A British soldier wounded by a Boer Mauser bullet During the early weeks of the war, the Boers were reported to be using poisoned bullets which worsened the infection of British soldier wounds.. Although the rifles used in the war were not intended to inflict massive damage, the Boers used German Mauser rifles which were known for creating clean wounds. However the bullets they used, known commonly as "Dum-dums" - also used by the British - were made from a soft lead which would expand upon impact or were modified by cutting through the outer case of a normal bullet to affect the way the opposing army was wounded. Boer bullets retrieved from wounded soldiers in the battlefields were often found to contain a green fat coating, which had been used to lubricate the chamber and rifle barrel.
