She helped repel several air attacks, splashing another enemy plane in the process, and duelled with Japanese artillery batteries ashore. On 21 August, she entered the lagoon at Eniwetok Atoll for a week before rejoining the Fast Carrier Task Force for a 33-day sweep of the Philippines, during which the carrier planes hit targets on Luzon and Mindanao in addition to striking the Visayan and Palau island sub-groups. She entered Ulithi on 1 October for provisions and upkeep.
By the conclusion of lap one Lawson had moved from 20th to 13th as Armstrong had overtaken Vesti for 16th, and Vips led Verschoor by 1.8 seconds. On the fourth lap, Caldwell retired due to the consequences of an earlier collision that damaged his front wing and a tyre. Pulcini duelled for seventh when he struck a tyre barrier at Lisboa corner and retired. Shortly thereafter, the safety car deployed due to an accident that nullified Vips' lead over Verschoor: Habsburg entered the Solitude Esses too quickly, ricocheted off a right-hand-side kerb and struck the wall.
Novikov took his second stage win on Lamastre—Gilhoc—Alboussiere, while Loeb and Ogier duelled back and forth throughout the morning, taking several seconds away from each other across the three stages. Meanwhile, a difficult day saw Lotos Team WRC's Michał Kościuszko end the first leg in twenty-first position overall, and he spent most of the morning stages recovering, running as high as sixteenth before crashing his Mini John Cooper Works WRC on St. Bonnet—St. Julien Molhesabate—St. Bonnet. Despite extensive damage to the rear of his car, he was able to continue to the midday service.
Jim Clark duelled for the lead through the first two-thirds of the race with Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and John Surtees (who dropped out with clutch problems), until lap 64 when his fuel pump failed. Stewart took up the lead and it was expected that he would move over to give his team leader the victory. The enthusiastic crowd were waiting for the BRM cars to come over the line in formation. However, on the approach to the Parabolica on the last time, Hill moved over too far and bounced across the grass, struggling to maintain grip on the mud and gravel.
Religious processions duelled with secular parades. Europeans and Creoles disguised as Indigenous, cases like a Spaniard resorting to cross-dressing tin a vain attempt to save his life and thousands of armed men in the streets of the colonial city. By 19 February people in the city regardless of the conflict continued celebrating and, throughout Carnival, the city markets were full of robbers selling the looted gold and silver back to its owners or to cholos and mestizos. By 1784 it was customary to rejoice, dance, play, and form comparsas (companies of masqueraders) for the Carnival in Oruro.
At the front, Rosenqvist and Vergne pulled clear from Bird and Heidfeld. With both drivers running at the rear of the pack, the team faced a predicament of pushing to secure the Teams' Championship or for Buemi to retake the Drivers' Championship. After ten laps, Vergne duelled Rosenqvist for the lead as the latter had more electrical energy to use than the latter ahead of him but could not find any space to move in front. Heidfeld and Bird backed themselves into Dillmann's path, prompting him to apply his brakes early and allowing López to challenge for third position.
However, every wave of islanders that was repulsed, was replaced by fresh men. Meanwhile, Mar led his knights into the main body of Donald's army with similar results. The islanders brought down the knights' horses and then used their dirks to finish off the riders. By nightfall, the ballads claim that 600 of Mar's men were dead, including Ogilvie and his son, Scrymgeour, Sir Robert Maule, Sir Thomas Morrow, William Abernethy, Alexander Straiton of Lauriston, James Lovel, Alexander Stirling, and Sir Alexander Irvine of Drum; according to Maclean history the latter duelled with Hector Maclean until both were dead.

In the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cao Xing played a greater role in the events preceding the Battle of Xiapi in 198. Cao Xing and Gao Shun were sent by Lü Bu to defend Xiaopei (小沛; present- day Pei County, Jiangsu) from Cao Cao's general Xiahou Dun. When the two armies met outside the city, Xiahou Dun duelled with Gao Shun for about 40 or 50 rounds before Gao Shun retreated. While pursuing Gao Shun, Xiahou Dun was hit in the left eye by an arrow fired by Cao Xing.
In the junior classes, Johann Zarco won the Moto2 race on a Kalex bike and KTM's Miguel Oliveira won in Moto3. Pedrosa won the pole position by recording the fastest lap in qualifying and maintained his start line advantage going into the first corner. The race was, however, overshadowed by the three-lap duel for third place between Honda rider Marc Márquez and his rival Rossi as the two traded position several times per lap. The tension between the two was high when Márquez and Rossi duelled each other in Argentina and the Netherlands and Rossi accused Márquez of helping teammate Lorenzo in Australia which both riders denied.
On 7 and 8 June, she conducted shore bombardments, destroying blockhouses and machine-gun positions as well as helping to repulse a counterattack mounted by German armored units. On 23 and 24 June, the warship supported minesweeping operations at the Bombardment of Cherbourg and duelled with enemy shore batteries. After the Allied ground forces had pushed the fighting front inland out of range of the destroyer's guns, Walke departed European waters on 3 July and arrived at the Boston Navy Yard on 9 July. Following repairs there and refresher training at Casco Bay, Maine, she sailed south and arrived at Norfolk on 26 August.
Shrewsbury was readily employed in Charles' court. He bore the Second Sword at the king's coronation in 1661, and in the same year was made Lord Housekeeper of Hampton Court and Treasurer and Receiver-General of Ireland. Lady Anna Maria Brudenell After his first wife and two young sons had died, Shrewsbury (who had succeeded to his father's titles in 1654) married the "notorious" Lady Anna Maria Brudenell, a daughter of the 2nd Earl of Cardigan, on 10 January 1659. On 16 January 1668, he duelled with one of his wife's lovers, George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, and was mortally wounded, dying two months later of his injury.
Nevertheless, the French claimed to have killed a number of soldiers ashore and inflicted slight damage on one of the shore batteries.Loir, 277–9 On the evening of 1March, Courbet gave orders for an attack the next day, but on the morning of the planned assault the risks of the operation became evident. Silencing the Chinese batteries would be a long and slow business, and while the French ironclads duelled with the forts they would be exposed to fire from the three Chinese cruisers. Even if the French warships succeeded in suppressing the Chinese defences and forcing the barrage, the enemy cruisers might still elude them by heading upriver towards Ningbo.
In the early laps they switched around between themselves several times to keep everyone amused. Fangio retired with engine troubles caused by a broken oil pipe and so Farina led Fagioli home by 2.5 seconds with Parnell a distant third despite hitting a hare during the race. The nearest challenger was Giraud-Cabantous two laps down, Bira having retired with a fuel problem. Crossley and Murray duelled at the back before retiring, de Graffenried had done so on lap 34, while Chiron was demoted to the role of viewer 10 laps earlier. Giuseppe Farina led for 63 laps (1–9, 16–37 and 39–70).
After departing from the station, the train made a slight left turn leading into the transfer track section before beginning to climb the lift hill. Once at the top and after going through a pre-drop, the train made a sharp left-hand drop back to the ground. Then, the train went back up, through an Immelmann followed by a slight air-time downward right turn before entering an air-time hill (this was the first of three near-miss points with the Hungarian Horntail train when the roller coasters duelled). Next, the train dropped back down turning left slightly, leading into a second Immelmann.
His single major race of 2007 was the Berlin Marathon but he did not manage to reach the top ten. He significantly improved his best at the Paris Marathon in April 2008 as he duelled against Tsegaye Kebede up to the 40 km and although he ended up as the runner-up to the Ethiopian he recorded a time of 2:06:50 hours. He set a half marathon best of 1:01:31 at the Rotterdam Half Marathon later that year and went on to run at the Chicago Marathon, where he came in thirteenth place. He ran two marathons in South Korea in 2009.
Markham took this as a 'refusal'. However the two men met by chance in Sherwood Forect and Holles declared he would 'spoil' Markham; they duelled with rapiers, and Holles ran through Markham 'through the middle of the guts and up to the hilt, and out behind toward the small of the back.’ This incident almost led to full-scale battle between Holles' men and those of Markham's friends, but Markham survived. Apparently he rashly swore to never eat supper or take the sacrament until he had gained revenge – but never did manage to! Despite his poor reputation, in 1625 Markham was Sheriff of Nottinghamshire with lands at Laneham and Dunham.
Alonso, Rosberg, Massa and Pérez rounded out the top 10 while 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher was in 13th - still clawing his way back into points contention. Lap 21 saw Räikkönen and Rosberg the only drivers in the top 9 on the soft compound after both saving a set during qualifying. During the same lap, Maldonando used DRS to put a move on Pérez, however went deep and the two duelled to turn 4 when di Resta who was behind them pounced through the inside as they battled each wide of the apex. Crucially, Räikkönen on softs had caught his teammate and was right behind him but was not able to overtake him, even with the DRS.
By 1976, Lew Lewis (harmonica) and Paul Gray (bass) had replaced Wall and Steele. Lewis's tenure in the group lasted for the release of their first two singles before he too left. With this new line-up, the Hot Rods played a set at London's famous Marquee Club – their opening act was the Sex Pistols playing their first London gig, which descended into chaos with the Pistols smashing the Hot Rods' gear;Gimarc, p. 26 During a residency at the club in the summer of 1976 they duelled for alternate weeks with AC/DC, to see who could cram more bodies into the Marquee during one of the hottest summers on record.
Van der Garde appeared to challenge Grosjean but the latter pulled away starting on lap four and van der Garde focused on holding off Herck. Bianchi had wheelspin leaving his grid slot and fell to fifth, separated by the Arden cars of Palmer and Král with whom he duelled for position. Palmer damaged his front wing entering Rivazza corner and Bianchi passed Král at the end of lap six when the latter picked up a front-right puncture that forced him to make his mandatory pit stop earlier than scheduled. On lap eight, Bird was trying to make up ground when he and his teammate Ericsson (who was returning to the track after sliding onto some grass) collided.
Rain fell during this period though it was not heavy enough to affect the race. Laurent passed Sarrazin's No. 17 BR1 car for third on the Mulsanne Straight before Sarrazin returned to third place by slipstreaming past Laurent into Mulsanne corner. The first hour ended with Vergne passing Duval for the lead of LMP2 and Chatin fell to third. The Porsches of Bruni and Estre duelled for first place in LMGTE Pro as Barker overtook Carioli for the top of LMGTE Am. Buemi relinquished the lead to his teammate Conway after the No. 8 Toyota made an unscheduled pit stop to have its rear crash structure replaced and the car rejoined the race in second position.
They see him, no less than Shintaro himself, as an obstacle to their ambitions. The season ends with Kongō and Shintarō leaving together in a boat sailing, as Shintaro says, into the far distance. There is in fact no duel between Shintaro and Kongo, because he and Kongo have already duelled successfully with the five ninja masters who believe (in vain) that they can bring back civil disruption and hence the glory days of the ninja clans. Wearied of fighting, Shintaro, with the disenchanted Kongo (who now sees the dream of restoring the past of bloodshed and violence to be futile), leaves for another life, his mission achieved and society at peace.
He moved to Formula One in with the Minardi team on a loan agreement with Benetton. Alonso was moved to the Renault test team by his manager Flavio Briatore in and worked alongside the engineering department to help improve the form of race drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jenson Button. He was promoted to a race seat at Renault for , becoming the youngest driver to win a pole position and a Grand Prix that year. After failing to achieve a Grand Prix victory in , he duelled McLaren driver Kimi Räikkönen and broke Emerson Fittipaldi's 33-year record of youngest Formula One World Drivers' Champion with seven Grand Prix wins and 133 points in .
Pitt's life came to an end when he quarrelled with his friend, Captain Best R.N., over a report that the latter had made an uncomplimentary remark about Pitt to a lady whose favours Pitt was then enjoying but who had previously been Best's mistress. Learning of this, Pitt challenged Best and insulted him. The following morning, they met again at a coffee house and Best asked Pitt to withdraw his remarks based upon their former friendship; he refused, possibly knowing that Best's famous skill with the pistol would leave him open to accusations of cowardice. On 7 March 1804, they duelled in a meadow – adjacent to the grounds of Holland House – with pistols; Pitt missed; Best did not.
42–43 This initially gained ground but was stalled when British armour moved up and the two sides duelled in the confined terrain. Informed during the afternoon that a big British offensive was under way further east, SS-Standartenführer Kurt Meyer of 12th SS Panzer called off the counter-attack and ordered his tank companies to return to their positions south of Rauray.Clark, p. 43 During the rest of the day the 49th Division was able to make progress, eventually halting just north of Rauray. At 0730 the 44th (Lowland) Infantry Brigade and the 46th (Highland) Infantry Brigade of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division, supported by the 31st Tank Brigade moved off their start lines behind a rolling barrage fired from 344 guns.
The cruisers Jean de Vienne and La Galissonnière were renamed FR11 and FR12, respectively, but their repair was prevented by Allied bombing and their use would have been unlikely, given the Italians' chronic shortage of fuel. Even the light destroyer (renamed FR37) and another four of the same class as Le Hardi were salvaged: FR32 (ex-Corsaire), FR33 (ex-Epée), FR34 (ex-Lansquenet), FR35 (ex- Fleuret). The main guns from the scuttled battleship Provence were later removed and used in a former French turret battery at Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer, guarding the approaches to Toulon, to replace original fortress guns, sabotaged by their French crews. Mounting four guns, in 1944 this fortification duelled with numerous Allied battleships for over a week before being silenced during Operation Dragoon.
The 9th Aintree 200 was a motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 18 April 1964 at Aintree Circuit, England. The race was run over 67 laps of the circuit, and was won by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Brabham BT7. During most of the race, Brabham duelled for the lead with Lotus driver Jim Clark, but the Australian won easily after Clark was obstructed by André Pilette and crashed on lap 47. There was also a class for Formula Two cars in this race, which was won by Mike Spence after the two cars in front of him retired on the last lap; Brian Hart suffering a driveshaft failure and Alan Rees running out of fuel.
Here Fourth Army was intended to make an amphibious assault behind the enemy lines and advance up the coast in conjunction with the BEF's Flanders offensive (the Third Battle of Ypres). In the meantime the massed artillery duelled with the German guns, suffering casualties through the summer. By the end of August it was clear that the BEF was not going to achieve a clean breakthrough, and the units on the coast began to be sent to the Ypres Salient to reinforce the offensive there. 33rd Divisional Artillery pulled back to its waggon lines on the night of 27/28 August and spent two days there, suffering serious casualties to the DAC from long-range guns, before marching south on 1 September to join Second Army.
Remembering Chris Among ,Motorsport 3-8-2016 After the first race of the F1 season in South Africa, Amon achieved pole positions in three of the following four races (at the Spanish, Belgian and Dutch Grands Prix) but ever-present mechanical problems meant he secured only a single Championship point from them. Throughout the rest of the season he never qualified lower than fifth place and nearly scored victories at the British and Canadian rounds and he suffered a 100 mph crash in Italy which demolished his car. In Britain, he duelled to the line with Jo Siffert's Lotus 49B and in Canada he dominated the race despite a malfunctioning clutch. Seventeen laps from the finish, however, his car's transmission failed and a distraught Amon had to be consoled by Jacky Ickx.
In the 1740s the British had allied themselves with the Miskito Sambus who were a mixed race of African and native American ethnicities, so when war broke out in 1762 the British and the filibusters began raiding Spanish settlements within Nicaragua for slaves, many of whom were shipped to Jamaica. Eventually a force of 2,000 Britons and Sambus sailed up the San Juan in more than fifty boats and canoes where they laid siege to about 100 Spaniards in the fortress on July 26. The garrison commander had died only recently leaving his daughter, the nineteen- year-old Rafaela Herrera and a lieutenant, to lead the defense. Herrera killed the British commander herself on the first day of the battle and for six days afterward the two sides duelled with cannons.
In the Battle of Lowestoft on 13 June 1665, the first battle of the Second Anglo- Dutch War, Eendracht, then armed with 73 guns, duelled the much heavier 80-gun English flagship Royal Charles. The Dutch chain shot killed a number of courtiers standing next to Lord High Admiral James Stuart on the English ship, but in the early afternoon Eendracht was hit in the powder room and exploded, killing Van Obdam. There were only five survivors out of the crew of 409. The Maas Amiralty promptly ordered a replacement 76-gun ship (of 160 Amsterdam feet in length) to carry the same name; she was built at Rotterdam by Salomon Janszoon van den Tempel, son of the previous builder, and completed in time to take part in the battles in the summer of 1666.
Born in Saransk, he won the 10 km youth section of the 2005 Russian Winter Walking Championships, then came a close second to Vladimir Akhmetov at the national junior championships. He and Akhmetov duelled at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Athletics and Morozov came out on top to win the world youth title over 10,000 m. The following year, he won the national junior winter title then won the junior race at the 2006 IAAF World Race Walking Cup. He was the leader early on at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Athletics, but collapsed mid-race and did not finish. In 2007 he had a series of wins over the 10K distance: he won the Russian junior winter title, then the 2007 European Race Walking Cup junior title, culminating in a gold medal at the 2007 European Athletics Junior Championships.
Twenty years previously when Tsing Tsung and Foeless duelled, Tsing Tsung won but was geviously wounded, he was nursed back to health by Foeless' wife, Sum Man Kwun. Foeless has neglected his wife in his quest to become the greatest fighter in Wulin and lonely Sum and Tsing Tsung become lovers. When Tsing Tsung has to return to Wudang he leaves with Sum the most precious thing in his possession as a promise of his return, his copy of the level eight Wudang manual. However, Tsing Tsung never does return, and alone again Sum studies the manual in memory of her lover, having no previous experience of qi cultivation and therefore no preconceptions of how to interpret the manual, Sum succeeds where generations of Wudang practitioners have failed and acquires qi powers that surpass even that of both her husband and lover.
The Prince Royal dismasted at the Battle of the Texel In the fourth Battle of Texel on 21 August 1673, Spragge and Tromp, commanding their respective rear divisions, again clashed repeatedly, each having their ships so damaged as to need to shift their flags to fresh ships twice. First the Prince Royal duelled the Gulden Leeuw; when the former ship was dismasted and half of her crew dead or wounded, Spragge shifted to HMS St George and Tromp to the Comeetstar. On the second occasion, whilst passing from the St George to the Royal Charles, Spragge's sloop was hit by cannon fire, a cannonball passing through the hull of the St George hitting the boat. The Admiral was injured but perhaps died by drowning as his vessel sank, just before reaching the ropes of the St George to which it had been rowed back as quickly as possible.
De Ruyter was accompanied by the representative of the States- General of the Netherlands, Cornelis de Witt (the brother of Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt) who bravely remained seated on the main deck, although half of his guard of honour standing next to him was killed or wounded. Lieutenant- Admiral Aert Jansse van Nes on the Eendracht first duelled Vice-Admiral Edward Spragge on HMS London and then was attacked by HMS Royal Katherine. The latter ship was then so heavily damaged that Captain John Chichely struck her flag and was taken prisoner; the Dutch prize crew however got drunk on the brandy found and allowed the ship to be later recaptured by the English. The flagship of Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, HMS Royal James, was first fiercely engaged by Lieutenant-Admiral Van Ghent, who in 1667 had executed the Raid on the Medway, on Dolfijn.
Jia Xu suggested that they should take this opportunity to launch a strike at Chang'an since the Liang Province forces' power base was actually unscathed after the coup. At the beginning of their campaign, not much Liang Province residents joined them, only several thousands soldiers followed the four, but the number grew along the way. Wang Yun sent Xu Rong and Hu Zhen to fight the Liang Province forces en route at An'feng, but Xu was killed in the first encounter and Hu led his troops (which originated from Liang) to join the rebels and the size of the rebel force was now greatly inflated. A fierce battle was fought outside the walls of Chang'an, where Guo Si personally duelled Lü Bu. Even Guo Si himself was defeated and was pierced by Lü Bu's spear, but he survived the wound and the Liang Province army pushed Lu back into the city.
After Fernando Alonso broke Red Bull's stranglehold on pole position in Monza and Singapore, the Austrian team returned to the front row of the grid, with Vettel leading Webber to pole position, half a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton, who had only completed a handful of laps over the weekend after his heavy accident in the first practice session that sidelined him for most of the second and the monsoonal conditions in the third. Hamilton went into the qualifying hour knowing that he was to take a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change after the team discovered damage from his retirement in Singapore. Hamilton's grid drop promoted Renault's Robert Kubica up into third place, separating the Red Bull drivers from their title rivals. Alonso in the sole remaining Ferrari duelled with Jenson Button, who once again adopted an unorthodox approach of setting his fastest lap time on the harder compound tyres.
The feud came to an conclusion when, on 26 December 1329, Robert de Montalt met Robert de Malberthorp on the bridge (two miles west of Mablethorpe), Robert De Montalt had accused Robert De Malberthorp of cowardice in battle and told him to get out of his way, Robert De Malberthorp resented the unjust rumour and refused to move, Robert De Montalt began to have doubts, but he did not dare to withdraw the charge as if he did, his five-week bride would think him afraid. The duel would settle the matter and whoever survived the duel would gain "satisfaction", by restoring one's honour by demonstrating a willingness to risk one's life for it. The De Montalt's stood on the side of earls bridge towards Maltby le Marsh and the Malberthorp's stood on the side nearest to Mablethorpe. The two Earls duelled in ghastly determination and both men understood of which in open conflict, one of the Earls had to kill the other one and that one of them would not be crossing the bridge alive.
After emerging through lowly União São João Esporte Clube's youth ranks, Rogério had a steady career with country giants Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras and Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, being essential in the former side's conquest of the 1999 edition of the Libertadores Cup; in 2002, playing as a right-back, he often duelled with Santos FC's Robinho during the national championship final, won by the opposition 5–2 on aggregate. In 2004, aged 28, Rogério moved abroad, signing a three-year contract with Sporting Clube de Portugal. Playing both positions on the right flank during his first season, he helped the Lisbon-based team to the campaign's UEFA Cup final, played on home soil: he scored the opener in the decisive match, but in an eventual 1–3 loss against PFC CSKA Moscow. Losing importance in the next year, Rogério returned to his country, first on loan at Fluminense FC. He retired in 2008 after one-year spells with Itumbiara Esporte Clube, Esporte Clube Santo André and Associação Desportiva São Caetano.
The Swedes resisted stubbornly, the artillery on both sides duelled near the highway while the infantry fought intensely out on the bog; some Swedish battalions counterattacked and pushed several Russian lines back, until their reserve gave them enough weight to repulse the Swedish attack. Jankovitj then reinforced his right flank with two battalions from the reserve — to encircle the Swedish left and gain access to the highway from behind — while his other battalions increased their activity at the front; this forced Fieandt to withdraw one kilometre, where he once again made a brief stand at a forest edge to buy time for the collection of wounded, before he eventually ordered a retreat towards Tunkkarin Silta, five kilometres away. The skirmish at Kokonsaari had proved to be one of the more intensely fought engagements during the whole war. The Swedish casualty report mentioned 159 privates and seven officers killed or wounded, however, this number excludes missing (an additional killed and captured); it is therefore likely that the total casualties in dead and wounded reached a sixth of their fighting force, excluding the prisoners.

The duel would settle the matter and whoever survived the duel would gain "satisfaction", by restoring one's honour by demonstrating a willingness to risk one's life for it. The De Montalts stood on the Maltby-le-Marsh side of Earls Bridge and the Mablethorpes stood on the side nearest to Mablethorpe. The two Earls duelled with ghastly determination and both men understood, one of the earls had to kill the other, and that one of them would not be crossing the bridge alive.
At the start of the race, Valtteri Bottas, starting second in his Mercedes, moved slightly before all five lights went out; Bottas said afterwards that he had reacted to lights on his steering wheel rather than the actual lights. As the movement was so small, the sensors that determine a jumped start did not pick it up, and thus Bottas was not penalised by the stewards; however, he had damaged his own launch and consequently lost four places on the first lap. With the track drying swiftly, drivers quickly came into the pits for slick tyres - as both Haas cars were already on the medium compound, they did not have to pit, and were in third and fourth by lap 8. By lap 9, polesitter Lewis Hamilton had already gained seven seconds on second placed Verstappen. Having already spun at turn one on lap 5, Nicholas Latifi of Williams received a five second time penalty for an unsafe release in the pits, where he almost collided with the McLaren of Carlos Sainz Jr. On laps 9 and 10, Bottas duelled with Charles Leclerc's Ferrari for sixth place, eventually getting past at turn one, with Leclerc complaining about his soft compound tyres.
Ledis Frank Balceiro Pajon (born April 18, 1975 in Matanzas) is a Cuban sprint canoeist who competed from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. In 1995 Balceiro became the first-ever Cuban canoeist to win a major international title, taking the Pan-American Games C-1 1000 m gold medal in Mar del Plata, Argentina. At the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Balceiro duelled with Canadian Steve Giles, the reigning world C-1 1000 m champion. Giles won the C-1 1000 m final ahead of Balceiro with the positions reversed in the C-1 500 m event. By now the Cubans were challenging the top European canoeists as well and at the Sydney Olympics, Balceiro achieved another first as he won the country's first-ever canoe/kayak Olympic medal - the C-1 1000 m silver behind Germany's Andreas Dittmer. In the C-1 500 m event, he finished sixth. On the retirement of Leobaldo Pereira at the end of the 2001 season, Balceiro was selected as the new partner for Ibrahim Rojas in Cuba's two-man (C-2) canoe. The two men had occasionally raced together as teenagers and struck up an immediate understanding on and off the water. In 2002 they became double world champions (C-2 200 m and C-2 500 m) in Seville, Spain.
