Schodowski worked closely with Anderson (as Ghoulardi) on Shock Theater, and was instrumental in bringing in the blend of blues and polka music that helped define the show, adding comic audio drop-ins to enliven the often awful movies, and immortalized The Rivingtons' tune "Papa Oom Mow Mow" by marrying it to the image of an old man gurning.
His apparent lack of brilliance also had positive side effects, making him immune to mind-numbing chemicals in "Goof Gas Attack" and being the only person able to properly handle the Kirwood Derby hat in "Missouri Mish Mash". Ollusion received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 71, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on 4 reviews. Allmusic's editor Andy Kellman found it "Almost all of these beats would be classified as snapping, slapping, or smacking before banging, flecked with details yet simultaneously somewhat half-assed-sounding. Given the number of partially detached vocals, filled with android-in-heat impersonations, clipped-phrase drop-ins, and messing around, it's as if Omarion wanted to make a concerted attempt to downplay his vocal ability, which only adds to the album's weird, teasing charm.".

Since the format change to "Charlie", the station localized the sound with a variety of drop-ins that reference landmarks, roads, quirks, folk-lore for the region. On June 13, 2008, Charlie FM's programming was abruptly dropped, replaced with that of WORD News Radio, which had previously only broadcast on AM, leaving the station to abandon music altogether after nineteen years. No reasoning was ever officially announced, but it is believed that Entercom was worried that the adult hits format would hurt its sister stations, especially WSPA-FM and WROQ. The switch also makes up for the poor signals generated by WYRD-AM and WORD-AM at night, when the stations have to cut their power and go directional.

The album was recorded by Aaron Cupples, a "good friend" of Liddiard. He recalled that the band wanted "an honest and uninvolved" sound, similar to Neil Young's Tonight's the Night: "I wanted [...] not to 'hide' the process of recording from the listener [...] all the drop-ins and drop-outs are all just laid out bare." He recalled a crossfade 2 minutes into the track "I'm Here Now" for the drop-in of a new guitar, which he made smaller to make it sound "like a volume swell that you can do on a guitar with the volume knob". The band also spent a lot of time "placing the drums in the right spot so they sounded big", which ended up being in the middle of the room and lent the recordings "plenty of low end".
Wonder what happens if…'." The music is "heavy on the gangster/rude boy vibe," reflected in the titles of "Hustling," "Original Gangsta," "Heartless" and "Original Nuttah", and in the lyrical delivery throughout the album, with "some of the most aggressively fun vocabs and ways around things vocally than most could ever dream of." The "dub bass moves and the drop-ins of shotguns and echo," which have been compared to Lee Perry, give the music a dancehall vibe, which, according to Raggett, is "why you have Junior Dan going on about being heartless with a sweet-touched reggae backing at points even while the drums are going wonderfully nuts all around him." Many of the songs concern urban alienation, and while, according to Raggett, "staying one step ahead of capture" in the "urban jungle" was not necessarily a new subject for music, the speed to the music is essential, "because this isn't being cool and head-nodding, it's bolting forward.
In the West Midlands, after the divesture of some radio holdings to Orion Media, the Gold brand continued as a franchise, however, in late 2012 these stations were rebranded as Free Radio 80s and no longer carried Gold network programming. Most Gold stations on AM/local DAB transferred to receive their network programming provision from Smooth Radio on 24 March 2014; local news/travel and advertising drop-ins into the network programming feed continue as previously provided under Gold, and the former Gold stations in Wales continue to offer a four-hour local show as Smooth Wales. Three Gold areas where Smooth is already provided on FM – London, Manchester and the East Midlands – retain a reduced Gold service on AM and (bar Manchester, where capacity is unavailable) local DAB, with most presented shows (aside from a daily morning show) ceasing. A number of areas gained or regained Gold as a DAB service in September 2015 in space vacated by XFM, following XFM's move from local to national transmission as Radio X.
In April 1985, owner Amaturo Radio Group dropped the urban format of WDRQ and changed the call letters to WLTI (initially known as W-Lite, later 93.1 Lite FM). The station initially aired a soft adult contemporary package from Transtar called Format 41 (so named because it consisted of songs meant to appeal to female listeners in their early 40s), described by Amaturo president Monte Lang in an April 20, 1985 Billboard article as "targeted at listeners who prefer Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond and leaning toward easy listening." Despite the success Amaturo had had with Format 41 with its own WJQY in the Fort Lauderdale-Miami market, the Detroit market was already crowded with adult contemporary stations and WLTI failed to attract an audience until the station added local personalities around 1987. DJs such as the morning drive team of Eddie Rogers and Pat Holiday (both veterans of CKLW) - whose show featured comedic "celebrity" drop-ins by the spoofed likes of Rodney Dangerfield, Clint Eastwood and Eddie Murphy, as well as original characters like Mr. Action, enabled the station to hold its own in competition against the other AC stations in the market, including WNIC.
